With the launch of Patch 9.1, the first three chapters of the Chains of Domination storyline became available. We explore some of the lore referenced in this storyline, about Odyn, Helya, and the Jailer's Eye.
Warning: Spoilers for this week's Chains of Domination quests if you have not yet completed them.
In
Chapter 3 - Focusing the Eye
, the player meets and rescues Danica, one of Odyn's golden Val'kyr, from the Maw. On returning to Skyhold, Danica brings Odyn a message from Helya.
Helya says: I will twist every val'kyr you send, Odyn, just as you twisted me so long ago. Your own eye betrays them all. Such sweet irony.
Odyn yells: She... DARES? By my beard, Helya will answer for this!
Odyn is enraged and sends more of his Val'kyr with the player to attack the Jailer's Eye, ultimately blinding it and causing it to flee. This questline removes the
Œil du Geôlier
debuff from the Maw, and also explains why the
Jailer's Eye
is a boss that we will face in the upcoming
Sanctum of Domination
raid.
But what is the history between Odyn and Helya, and why does he seem to consider the Jailer's Eye such an insult?
The Jailer's Eye is Odyn's Eye
It's long been established that Odyn exchanged one of his eyes for a glimpse into the Shadowlands. From
The Legend of Odyn
, an in-game book found within Skyhold,
There are more stories about Odyn's lost eye than there are stars in the sky. Some say the great serpent Ysildar tore it out. Others say the treacherous Helya stole it. But this is the end of it, the truth of it, from the keeper himself.
A great spirit appeared to Odyn from this circle, billowing up from ethereal mists, shapeless, to surround the keeper in shadow. "What will you give," the spirit asked, "to peer beyond the veil of this world?"
Wise Odyn considered the wraith's question. "I have two eyes," he replied. "One to see in this world of mortals, and one to see into the realm of spirits." And with that, Odyn plucked his own eye from his head and presented it to the spirit. The spirit clasped his eye and swallowed it whole, and great Odyn saw.
According to an interview that
Johnny Cash did with SA Gamer
, Odyn caught a glimpse of Bastion, and based his Val'kyr on the ascended Kyrian that he saw there. We enjoyed how
Focusing the Eye
ends with a fun interaction - the Val'kyr Danica meets the Kyrian Kleia and Adrestes, and they seem interested in the similarities between them.
“Odyn made a pact some time ago. He traded his eye for a view into the Shadowlands, but he only got a peek. So he saw into the Shadowlands, he has never visited them himself. The things he saw were primarily the kyrian, so he based his Valarjar off that vision of what he saw as he glimpsed across the veil. That is what formed a lot of the inspiration when we were working on Bastion: we know how the Valarjar came to be. What are these incredible angelic beings that Odyn saw, and what are they about? What are their motivations, what role did they serve in this engine of death? This was the first inspiration for us when putting this zone together and things just started to take shape from there.”
During the dungeon
L’Autre côté
, Mueh'zala revealed that it was he who struck the deal for Odyn's eye - on the Jailer's behalf.
Mueh'zala yells: It be Mueh'zala who brought Helya to da Jailer's side... struck a deal for ol' Odyn's eye... and made da Banshee warchief with a whisper!
Odyn's eye was then used to create the Eye of the Jailer. From the Eye of the Jailer entry in the
Sanctum of Domination
encounter journal,
When Azeroth was young, Odyn traded his eye to Mueh'zala to peer into the Shadowlands. Vain Odyn was deceived, for the Jailer twisted the Eye to serve his own ends. The Eye's unwavering gaze allows the Jailer to see all that transpires within his domain--and perhaps others as well.
Odyn and Helya
When Helya taunts Odyn with the threat that she will "twist" every Val'kyr he sends, "just as you twisted me so long ago", it shows that she hasn't forgotten for even a moment what Odyn did to her.
Centuries ago, when Odyn first decided to create Val’kyr, no one volunteered to be the first, so he decided to force the role on mortal Vrykul. Helya, who was like a daughter to Odyn at the time, strongly objected to this, and even threatened to leave if Odyn went through with it. (In fact, an early version of this questline even had Helya address Odyn as "father".) Seeing her threat as an act of disobedience, Odyn forcibly transformed Helya into his first Val'kyr instead, and then made her do the same to unwilling Vrykul herself.
Though Helya has done more than enough since then to prove herself to be a true villain now, there has never really been a reckoning for Odyn. We suspect this won't last forever. Odyn may still be able to act the glorious hero-god, but sooner or later, he will need to answer for what he did to Helya.
