This idol used to be --> "Reduces the rage cost of Maul and Swipe by 3."
In 2.0.3 it was changed to --> "Increases the damage dealt by your Maul and Swipe ability by 50."
In 2.0.10 it was changed to --> "Increases the damage dealt by your Maul ability by 50 and Swipe ability by 10."

Currently, a very lackluster idol compared to what you can get in TBC.

It got changed from "-3 rage on maul and swipe" to "50 damage on maul and swipe" in patch 2.0.3.
Bad change IMO, the previous version was great for tanking (of which blizzard has stated is one of the primary roles for Druids in BC).
We can only pray they add a new "-rage cost" idol.

I agree that this idol was nerfed bigtime. The reduced rage cost was amazing. In fact, I spent about 15 runs in UD strat primarily for this idol in its OLD form. In this new form, I almost want to just throw it away.

If you happen to get it, great. If not, dont go hunting for it because it really isnt very good.

This idol is still good for bear form. With crits at level 67, with crit rate at 28% I keep spamming swipe while tanking - swipe crits goin for 450+ ! Great for aggro, great for damage. My favourite idol

Another thing to bear (sorry) in mind is that not all druids have Mangle.

As a tank, Idol of the Wild is totally useless to me, and Idol of Ursoc, as has been previously stated, isn't as effective at increasing the threat as this one. Hence I can see it staying in my tanking gear for a very long while.

Threat for Mangle is Dmg Done x 1.5
Threat for Maul is Dmg Done + 207.

Thus, the Idol of The Wild increases your threat by 52x1.5 = 78 per Mangle.
The Idol of Brutality increases your threat by 50 per Maul.

Assuming you are using Maul every cooldown, you do 2.4 Mauls for every Mangle. In this situation, Brutality is the better trinket, doing 120 threat for every 78 that Wild will produce. This is not even taking into account the extra dmg + threat on Swipe.

You would have to be using Maul only on every 2nd attack for the Idol of the Wild to be superior, and not using Swipe. So in rather low rage situations vs a single target, Wild is slightly better.

Agreed. This remains the best tanking idol in BC. (as long as you have the rage to spam Maul, which is often to always in late game instances)

Druid Soloing:

-Be level 70.

-Set your hearth to LHC for repairs/vendoring.

-Zone in the front (if you enter the side entrance Barthilas will run toward the end of the instance, forcing you to pass harder trash to get to him).

-Go bear and kill the first pack of mobs.

-Do *not* stealth. Stealth-seeing mobs can detect you at a greater distance when you're stealthed than when you're visible. It's an oddity of the aggro-range system. Stay in bear gear but do your running in humanoid form so you can get Furor if you aggro something and have to fight.

-After the first pack of mobs it's not necessary to kill anything other than Barthlias. You can safely run between groups, or between groups and the wall. The only complications are as follows:

-Box traps. Assume every clickable box is a trap. Run past it to a safe spot and kill the rats/maggots/etc quickly. Do *not* swipe when there's less than 3 left, it's possible to hit something that had been too far away to aggro.

-Eye of Naxx. If you keep moving you may miss them entirely. If one appears kill it quick. If it lives long enough to spawn two elite gargoyles they'll aggro a group and you'll die.

-Walking patrols. After the first gate there's some solo pats. There's only 2-3 that matter, just wait until you know where they are and move when it's safe.

-After killing Barthilas, zone out the side entrance to your right, reset the instance, and ride back to the front. Once I got in the above groove I was able to start a new run 8 minutes after I'd started the prior one (judging by the time left on Thorns).

I lost count of how many UD Strat runs I made back when I was 60 trying to get the Idol of Brutality and it never, ever dropped. Finally, today, I have it in hand.

I farmed for this yesterday, using a slightly different technique than what Sounder describes above.

- Zone in from the front, indeed if you try to enter from the side then Barthilas will run to the Baron to warn him.

- The first time it is not possible to go directly to Barthilas via the shortest wat (on the right side) because you will not have the key from Barthilas yet (Key to the City) so you have to go the whole way around (left side, follow the circle), it's still short but there are 2 gates to pass. At the first one I got a pack of rats and then aggroed a pat. At the second one I had to fight a boss (Unforgiven I think), easy and dropped some blue gloves druid from an old druid set (BoE so can be sold at AH at least). Trash is not an issue anyway, even pulling 2+ groups won't kill you, they are really really easy, just swipe/mangle your way through. Only issue is that the zombies can stack several diseases and it's a bit of a mess after a while, but I was never in danger to die and never had to pop out of bear for healing.

- If you have the key just follow on the right side. You do not have to kill ANY mobs before reaching Barthilas. Just stealth all the way, it works. With the feral talent it's really easy (especially if you are used to do stealth runs), just don't get too close to the mobs that can see through stealth. You don't even have to pull the first pack of skeletons, you can actually just go right through the pack and they won't see you (done multiple times). When you get to the door where you need the key, just go as close as possible to the door, change to caster and open it, I've done it multiple times and never aggroed anything except a couple of rats (easily dispatched with moonfire). On the other side of the locked door go on, a bit more mobs who can see through stealth but still possible to stealth through whatever the distribution/placement of mob is. Be careful with the clickable boxes (supply crates), they open if you run through them or get really close, and sometimes rats or larvas will spawn, can be problematic if you are near big groups - but after the 2nd run I got the hang of it and it never happened any longer.

- When you get to Barthilas no need to clear any trash, just after the door leading to where he is there is a kind of corner on the right hand side, it's nice to fight him there because he has a knockback ability. The first couple of fights I had some problems (although I never had to heal except frenzied regen), afterwards very easy. I usually cast regrowth on myself, opened with moonfire then retreated to corner while casting rejuv and lifebloom - nice little healing cushion. Then basic tank and spank fight. I had 40-50% health at the end (about 15% after frenzied regen for the first fight because I didn't think of putting HoTs on me and I had several diseases with DoT and damage reduction)

- Go out via side exit. Again you can unlock/open the door without aggroing the nearby group if you stand really close to the door. The mobs look very close but at lvl 70 they don't aggro you.

- Reset instance and start again. Also something I was not aware of, after 5 tries you cannot enter any longer before some amount of time (an hour or so?), it's a bit of a pain because of course the idol didn't drop in my 5 first attempts ;-)

It usually took me 4 minutes to stealth through, 2 minutes to fight and exit, 2 minutes to run back. The idol dropped on 8th kill.

As a Druid, stealth to the left side past the Cryptlord boss, into the gate that closes and spawns a few rats (which you will use Barkskin/Hurricane on) otherwise you will have to go past 2 groups of Ghouls that see through Stealth. This way you can get to the boss in 2 minutes, kill him and corpse run back for another easy try.

did a stealth run on Barthilas last night. fairly simple. just go slow and look out for pats. as long as you go in the "living" entrance, Barthilas is standing right outside the area where Aurius can be found...number 6 on this map.

as stated above, first timers without the key to the city will need to go to the left and pass through 2 gates. the first one locks you in and spawns several rats. just barkskin/hurricane them.

once you reach Barthilas, jump past him while stealthed into the chamber. rebuff/eat, switch to bear, and pull him in. keep your back against the wall to avoid the knockback. i was able to get him down without heals, pots, or regen....AND got lucky with the idol dropping on the first try :)

I did some testing on this and I noticed the following:
- At level 69 it only increased the damage of Swipe by 8, instead of the suggested 10 (so it doesn't scale and has diminishing returns over 60)
- The total damage increase is 8 * 3 or 24 per swipe

Still a very good item. On a boss I'll use the Mangle one. On trash with at least three mobs I think I'm going to use this.

Mangle is very well and good but you can only use it on your main target and it has a cooldown... For AE tanking this thing is clearly better.

Actually one can do this boss in one minute.

-Enter Baron side.
-As soon as you open the gate, Barthilas will run away.
-Sprint in catform and charge towards him (make sure you get to him before he goes through the gate).
-You will have to kill some extra skeletons, but should be no problem in bear.
-Reset if you didn't get the idol, and repeat.

This looks the most effective way..

* Enter though front gate A
* clear 5 groups of skelletons and 3 nub patrols
* go though the locked gate marked with a blue dot
* Fight though i think it is like 5 more skelleton groups aswell as a few other nubs
* Kill Magistrate
* loot
* Exit back entrance
* Repeat as long as it takes

Compared to Idol of Ferocity is pretty spectacular. 3 rage >> 3 energy. This is THE idol to tank, and pretty spectacular, specially considering it's not epic.
Can't wait for an epic feral idol!
And let's hope they introduce a new balance idol, poor moonkins!

I'm a rogue.

Steamrolling the Alliance in AV, I was finishing off the last archer in south bunker as our team was clearing the aid.

On FFA per usual, I see it is BOP. I ask in raid for a druid to come to my position in south tower. I ask again... and a third time. Finally, I go through the team list and find... of 35 people on Horde, not ONE druid. I sat on it watching a few new players come in, thinking how much SOMEbody would love this; no druids.

When raid leader said Vann at 50%, I picked it up and sprinted in for a few hits. Vends for about 1g 80s.

I've seen a few blues drop in AV, but this is the first BOP I have ever seen.

I got the idol from the Magistrate last night, and then it dropped again from The Razza (one of the Dire Maul arena bosses) today.

So if you're going to make repeated runs for the idol, do keep hitting the Magistrate, but be aware that it also shows up elsewhere from time to time.

According the WoW Bug Forums, the fact that this Idol is BoP is a known bug. Hopefully they'll fix this quickly and they will be correctly marked Bind on Equip.

Here is the milliondollar question. Since Idols are in the spots where guns use to be, and you can easily change weapons during battle. Can you change idols when you shift? I mean there are a ton of add-ons that change your gear for you when you shift, how awesome would it be to get the benefit of both idols! I currently am only lvl 50 and have zero idols so I can't really test this :(... Anyone want to give us some feedback?

How to get?
Dropped for my druid twink just yesterday.
Following the strategy posted above, we entered Strath through the front gate and cleared the way to the Magistrate near the side entry (5-8 mob groups, weighing speed against safety). Got him to drop on our 4th run, 3 druids in group but they decided to give it to me. Lucky me! =)

*edit* Dropped again right away on the next Strath Run, makes me believe Thottbot is rather wrong about the drop rate */edit*

Stealth run?
Stealthing to him is definitely impossible - even if it wasn't for the stealth detection, in cramped passages the mobs will certainly notice you stepping on their toes trying to pass by. You'll also have to unstealth to open a gate.

Soloing?
Same goes for soloing; the Magistrate stacks an enrage on himself as the fight goes on. The longer it takes, the harder he hits, as his self buff seems to stack (SpellAlert stated it stacked to 14 until he fell to our group of 4). Even sporting >10k AC you certainly won't survive long enough for your bash to cool down. A group of 4 should do fine, 3-man it if you're up for the challenge.

Useful?
Mathematically, the reduction from 10 to 7 means 43% more rage when using maul, 25% more rage when using Swipe. For every fight there is a break-even point between your AC/Dodge, DPSout and DPSin at which you can use Maul and/or Swipe on every attack. Endgame tanks often knowingly reduce their AC in non-raid instances to gain enough rage to pass this mark. Once you get your hands on this idol, you'll probably never worry about rage generation again. Ever.
It's certainly rather pointless when tanking raid bosses (the DPSin guarantees endless rage), but farm runs are much more fun now.

Conclusion
This is for a bear tank what a ZHC is for a mage, and way easier to get!

This sounds like a monstrously good idol for any feral tank. 50 more raw damage on swipe would be huge considering its a major part of our tanking stratefy and that it lands for 110-140 depending on your AP. 50 extra dmg on maul is still pretty good.

At lvl 70. If you choose your paths well, you can stealth past all the trash - even the ones that can see through stealth. When you get to the gate, just shift to humanoid form and open it. The mobs won't notice.

Edit: don't need to stealth! I did stealth past the boxes of rats, but between the groups of mobs, just used regular cat form, no stealth. Apparently the aggro radius of the stealth detecting mobs is wider when you are stealthed than when you're not, so it was easier to just walk between them to get to the magistrate.

Got my idol on the 5th run.

Hit 70 yesterday. I have never been to Stratholme with my druid so I didn't have the key to the place. Took the long way through Strath LS, the gate with the rats (fetched nasty disease -10% dodge), then right were the boss spawns which actually dropped the Wildheart Gloves. Didn't use stealth, at 70 you can walk right past the mobs if you hug the wall. The bossfight was a bit longish, healed myself ones and finished him when I had about 30% health left myself. And wonders can happen, the idol dropped on my first try. I was actually prepared to do Runs the whole morning.

Lvl 70 druid here. I got this last night after 4 resets with a 70 priest friend of mine. Make sure you bind nearby (Light Hopes Chapel in the event you need to reset the instance, you cant just walk out way you came in)

For previous message. You don't need to bind LHC. For the reason that you can use exit which is to the right of Magistrate.(he drops key to the city, so you can use the door)...As for drop rate, i think i really sucks...i sepnd 3 days looking for drop and i don't have it yet...also because of limitation of dungeon runns.hope to get it today:)

...and by the way...if you are feral druid and level 70, it is easy to solo Magistrate. Just play wise...it take less time for each try, then if you have a friend(unless your friend is another druid or rogue). My killing strategy: use Enrage then i am waiting for 5 seconds and use Fairy fire. When he is in melee range use bash and for 60 seconds make as many damage as it possible with mangle and maul, after bash is ready use it, change from bear to normal form and heal yourself while running to the building with some NPC(i use 3 lifeblooms and rejuvination) then just kill him:) Have fun and good luck with looting

Just an update. Just soloed to this guy, I'm not in T4. I'm 44/17 feral/resto druid. Soloed and no drop. Took a little while (about 20min?) to get to him and kill him. Would be much easier with a DPS or healer buddy but very doable.

I actually killed stuff omw out of boredom.

Jeez - very lucky got in and it dropped on my 2nd try - Im very pleased.

He's not hard to solo, Im a druid tank with ~16,000hp and 22,000 armour in bear. Stealthed into the chapel, cast regrowth, and then keep hitting him, all the normal stuff, keep Roar up to reduce dmg, keep Lacerate at max, keep Faerie Fire up, Bash when can, and Mangle in whatever time is left.

Had to heal on first try, but frenzied regen and one bounce out to do lifebloom & rejuv was all that was needed, second go I didnt even need that.

Stealthed through from the main enterance, so magistrar was near the chappel, then once killed exit via side entrance.

Only point to be careful of is going throught the tunnel at market street, those three ghostly wraith things speed along there and trip over you easily, so dont waste time there.

Hmm. Im starting to think that im very unlucky =/
18 runs so far, and no Idol dropped. Lots of hats and gloves though ;) And as im enchanter i atleast got alot of Large Brilliant Shards from it all. But as for droprate, im down to 0.05% if it drops on next run, and then lower. So im hoping thottbot's 0.05% is correct ;)

so ive run this thing maybe about 9 times already. i got the hat, bracers, and the peacemaker a lot, but thats it plus of course the key and the scourgestone or watever its called. i know he spawns in two places depending on where u go in, so is there an advantage to killing him in a certain place opposing to another. all the runs ive done so far have been near the chapel by the side gate, not at the place at the end of the instance. should i try that instead?

ok so so far from fighting him at the church near the service entrance all ive gotten are the peacemaker, bracers, gloves, and hat. however today i tried something different and fought him farther into the instance, and both times he dropped the cloak. does he have a better chance of dropping different iems at different locations?

ok second and final edit. it dropped for me today! woot! i got it at the second location farther into the instance. so my theory is this:

if u r looking for bracers, helm, gloves, or the polearm, get him at the place near the service gate by going in the main entrance. but if u r looking for the cloak or the key, first make sure u have the key that he drops. then go through the service entrance east of the main entrance. when u go through the instance and unlock the gate he will run away. then u can either stealth through (yes it is possible, i did it as a lvl 70 ne druid) or just kill to get to him father into the instance near the end. pretty much the same fight. only u thing u might have to worry about is rockwing gargoyles flying in and agroing u while u fight him. just remember to focus on him, u can get the gargoyles afterward. if ur a druid (which u probably are if u are looking at this item) then just stay in bear form and u should be fine if u have an alright set of gear. just keep faerie fire feral and the roar up, and lacerate and 5 and use mangle a lot and maul if u have enough rage. and if u need to heal u CAN stun him and pull off a quick regrowth, then cast barkskin and do healing touch for extra safety. i killed him a total of 3 times at the farther in spot. first 2 times the cloack dropped and second time the idol dropped. so not much more i can say besides good luck and be patient! also if u dont get it u dont have to die to leave, u can just stealth to the service entrance area, leave the instance that way, reset it, and go back in and try again as many times as you need. thanks for reading and have fun!

As an update..

This still drops from the Magistrate in UD Strat.

Magistrate can be solo'd by a level 70* Druid.

* Magistrate may very well be soloable before 70. I killed him 9 times solo at level 70 before I got the Idol. (1/9 drop rate for me.) Very few times did I have to shift out to heal myself, and those were only the first two times I faced him and when I backed into a stupid crate with buggies.

A level 70 can enter UD side (if you have key) and go the entire way to where Magistrate ran to without having to fight any monsters, aside from the "trap" area where you have to Barkskin + Hurricane a million little bugs. And I don't mean prowling there.. I mean in caster form. (Those pesky undead and their ability to smell you!) Pre-70, however, you may be required to kill some groups, as some areas don't allow much room for error. At 70, the groups are a joke. Lots o' swiping, and the job is done. Just be wary of pats.

Got this thing from Zul'Gurub today, Edge of Madness, think it was a demon or one of those troll priests standing there who dropped it. I had heard it only dropped in Naxxramas, so it was a nice surprise. Got Foror's Eyepatch later that run, both for minimum DKP, since nobody else wanted them.

Works good afai can tell, but it was one hell of a streak, first trying with a bunch of druids and then figuring out that I needed to lure non-druids into doing runs with me... preferably guildies or ppl with vent capability and good gear for less wipes and more speed.

1. Abomination Stitchings drop almost every run.
2. Corruptor's Scourgestones - Balzaphon alone drops 2, EVERY TIME. use this fact to get ppl.
3. AD Rep - appr. 220 per run for me at barely Honored (the runs got me to Honored).
4. Xp... as a last resort - or thereabouts - you can get ppl with lvl 55+ alts to come along. Find someone lvl 59 and they'll love it.

Good luck. No video from me of this thing, to common of a pull and he's there all the time, so it'd just be boring.

This dropped for me on the first kill of the magistrate since 1.11. I also have the idol of ferocity. Too bad I'm specced for restoration!

I'm not much good at math, though I once was (AP Calc back in public H.S. 1991).

So I kinda tried to figure it out the Navy Diver way:

5.2825/50 kills = about 10%-ish, and there's no point going to a decimal since this is all conjecture anyway, and I don't believe it was exactly 50 new kills.

I've killed Magistrate 14-15 times after patch and got the idol the last two drops, which is well within the bounds of any reasonable way of looking at the droprate after the patch.

Ergo, I propose we call the drop rate somewhere around 10%. Give or take 1-2% is my bet.

Any idea on how to tell what phase of classic this will be available in?

Can any Classic player confirm that this item is available in Phase 1?
Magistrate Barthilas is already in the game, but is this item on his loot table right now, or will it be added in later phases? If so, which phase would it be?

So at what Phase will this be available? Other Sites say Phase 5. But here and in Atlas Loot its marked as Phase 6

The strategy quoted below from 2006 still works!

Run in through Live side, kill the packs of Cadavers & Skeles and turn RIGHT.
Then, go through the two locked gates, kill 2 / 3 more packs and head to the side gate. Oh, look! It's the Magistrate!
Kill the pack right by the UD entrance and pull the Magistrate into the corner where they used to be. Remember he throws the tank around, so back up into a wall.

We ran 3 times before it dropped, so the 2% drop rate quoted in Atlas loot is either wrong, or we got very lucky.

So, im farming it at 68 atm. 23 kills still no relic. I suggest you do this not before 68 due to aggro range.

What takes the most time is just instance lock out. Also you haft to get the key, if you dont already, which means getting help with a mage friend to pull the boss from the undead side with blink etc. Or do a normal run to get key, and master loot/reserve the key ;)

Anyway, just avoid aggro range/stealth detection / cages that breaks stealth and eye of naxxaramas. @#$% still hurts, at least at 68 with decent tank gear for feral. And again you go living side, then turn through the first gate on the right entering undead side

My pull goes: Starfire>moonfire>regrowth>reju>lifebloom>kitty rip>bearform for rest. Some-times I dont go cat form, other times I even do it twice if I feel like being risky.

Also shadowmeld could work great in here if your Night elf.

Edit: 34 kills and I got it.

Easily solo'd this as a Feral tank at 70 in TBCC. I got some diseases I couldn't dispel..but really you can just walk by almost everything. The only thing that got me was an eye which then aggro'd a bunch of stuff onto me. Took me forever to cleave it all down..but doable.

The named only got me down to about 90%, and probably most of that was simply the health regen debuff I had.

The main thing is to watch the gargoyles that patrol around. Either pull them off to a side and kill them or simply time your movement so they don't run into you and cause you to aggro more trash.

Update: My first run went smoother than the next one did. I ended up wiping thanks to a ghoul and then a bunch of gargoyles piling on. After dying though I could stealth easily to boss. The Ghouls can see through stealth but I was walking past them without it so it's not a huge problem.

Boss got me much lower this time ~60% health, but nowhere near being a close fight. I'm mostly just using the Heavy Clefthoof set, a few normal dungeon pieces and a lot of quest reward gear. The one main thing I have though is Bâton étrangleur de Terestian, which certainly helps my DPS a lot.

Feral druids who wants to stealthrun Magistrate for Idol of Brutality at 70+:

Enter from main enterance
Walk towards undead side.
If you have the Key to the City, you can go to the right and open the two gates and take the first turn on your right. He'll be straight ahead.
If you don't have Key to the City, go to the left, through the gate (it will close and reopen) and make a right. Continue down the path to the open gate on the left. He'll be straight ahead.
Kill Magistrate
You'll loot the key, so you can rerun it and proceed to the right hand path every time, as described in step two.
Exit to the right, reset instance and run back to the main enterance.

Some mobs have stealth detection, but it's only slightly increased range from level 70 mobs and should be fine to pass. They may turn around if you are on the boundary, but you have to go quite close for them to pull.

You could also try to do this from undead side, use sprint to catch up after the gate opens, but you'll pull 1-2 trash packs with the boss. They still hit quite hard at level 70 and apply a 10 min disease, which is why I would suggest the described path (and you're limited by 5 saves per hour anyway per 16.08.2021). The described path is also significantly shorter (considering you have to run back to reset) and easier patrols to avoid than running the entire way through undead side to get him.
