How to be Bigger: a Guide to Growth

This article is kept for historical purposes.
Current information is available in the approved
How to be Bigger: A Guide to Growth in WoW
guide post, crafted using the new guide tool, better organized, with screenshots!
Begin original guide:
There are many ways in WoW to make your character larger,
and they are gradually being removed from the game
. Some of them stack on each other, which can result in a mighty big character, and some do not.
As an engineer, I did some experimentation to see how big of a
Flying Machine
I could make in Shattrath. There was much information gleaned from experimentation and other posts and databases, but no single repository had all the answers. This article aims to fix that.
Reviewing current list of
stackable
growth buffs, here are a list of effects and ModScales (from
Wowhead
), which are given as % increases (ModScale 30 = 30% = 1.3x size):
(20m) (ModScale 30)
Elixir of Giant Growth
(or
Winterfall Firewater
, but that's only ModScale 25).
(2m) (ModScale 30)
Heroism
/
Bloodlust
(shaman spell)
(5m) (ModScale 50?)
Bom'bay's Grow buff
(horde only) -- can be doubled with a logout
(15sec) (ModScale 30)
Bulwark of Kings
(for plate-wearers) or Winterfall Firewater spell (via spell-steal)
UPDATE: rumor has it that in Cataclysm, you can no longer make this item, and existing items will no longer make you larger.
(1hr ea) (ModScale 20) 2x
Soul-split
and 1x
Enlarge effect
from
Dimensional Ripper (Area52 only)
and
Ultrasafe Transporters
(engineers only). These are the longest lasting growth effects (on-par with Gigantic Feast), and thus are quite useful for multi-stacking. There's roughly a 3-3.5% chance for each of the 3 growth effects each time you teleport (9.5% chance of
some
growth effect), and a roughly 2.7% chance to get the shrink effect (data collected from 500+ recorded attempts since patch 3.0.1). Be careful with these growth effects, as they cannot be removed, persist in death, and may prevent you from accessing tight areas (like the entry to Tournament of Champions, for example). With one of these buffs, #1 stacks, but Winterfall Firewater will make you bigger than Elixir of Giant Strength. With two of these buffs, #1 does not stack.
These buff timers will pause between logins, even across patch days, as long as (a) you don't have the rest effect (this might no longer apply, as of 1/13/2010), and (b) the server doesn't reset.
UPDATE: 12/6/2010
- these buffs may disappear the next time you use the Area52 Transporter.
(20m) (ModScale 30) 1x
Larger and Oranger
from Hallow's End Candy (only during Hallow's End event)
(1h) (ModScale 30)(food buff) 1x
Gigantic Feast
effect -- this counts as a food buff (made from
Gigantic Feast
). The Wowhead description doesn't mention a ModScale, but the in-game buff says 30%.
UPDATE 1/11/2010
-- as of patch 3.3.0, this no longer stacks with the Elixir of Giant Growth or Winterfall Firewater (MS25). It still stacks with #5, however.
-------------- Other effects that need more info
(10m) (ModScale 100)
Gift of the Giants
Granted by the quest
Raining Down Destruction
(Northrend, Grizzly Hills, available to both sides). {Thanks,
Thraisenth
}
With a 2x size increase and a 10m duration, this goes quite nicely with the above effects. This does stack with #1 at a minimum. The buff remains if you drop the quest, but you will lose the buff if you leave the area. It's still possible to stack this long enough with the other stuff to get some really good screenies.
----------------------- Race-changing effects that make you larger (stack with all size buffs)
Deathbringer's Will
from ICC-25 procs to turn you into a
Taunka
, an oversized Tauren, for 30 seconds with 1m15s gaps. {thanks
Pintor!
}
Iron Boot Flask
from the Storm Peaks will turn you into an Iron Dwarf, which is a larger-than-normal dwarf. Not sure if it's particularly larger than a human or even a tauren.
----------------------- Remaining bullets are short-duration and/or
----------------------- highly situational
(30 sec) (ModScale 50)
Red Mist
-- found in Deepholm, this temporary buff is applies when you enter into a wandering cloud of red mist.
(12 sec) (ModScale 150)
The Chosen One
-- You get this while fighting Terokk, about 15 seconds in, if you have the highest threat. It does stack with Elixir of Giant Strength (but I wasn't quick enough to SS the proof -- very short duration on this one).
(2m) (ModScale 40)
General's Warcry
, from AV BG -- almost not worth mentioning, since the queues can be longer than the duration of other growth buffs, and you might not get the Warcry; but it does stack with Elixir of Giant Growth. If you had everything else going into AV, you wouldn't make it out of the cave before the shorter ones expired anyway, so this is only here for completeness. Bom'bay's growth buff would likely not last long enough to get the first Warcry (especially considering queue time).
(15 sec) (ModScale 35) Growth Ray (
unconfirmed
: from a charmed/possessed Sunseeker Engineer) -- with such a short duration and unpredictable acquisition, it's only listed for completeness.
(30 sec) (ModScale 15-25)
Bigger!
from the quest
Hah... you're not so big now!
(Alliance, Crafty Wobblesprocket, lvl 69, Fizzcrank Airstrip in the Borean Tundra in Northrend) This is only one of the several random effects you can get from the device used in this quest. Additionally, there aren't that many suitable targets in the vicinity, so it's hard to get.
(15sec) /kiss Mojo (a pseudo-buff for your mount, since it sizes to maintain a constant height, which makes it much larger when you turn into a frog)
- As of patch 3.0.8, this no longer works.
(~15s after drinking stops) (ModScale ~10)
Strength of the Frenzyheart
from the daily quest
Secret Strength of the Frenzyheart
(alliance only, Northrend, Sholozar Basin, lvl 76+). {Thanks,
Corpsepile!
}
The trick with this one is to drink the
Thunderbrew's Hard Ale
that you obtain while on the quest. There's no registered buff when this drink makes you larger, and the effect dissipates quickly. However, for every 10 seconds you drink the Thunderbrew, you grow about 10% larger. You don't shrink until you stop drinking for about 15-20 seconds. If you do this for about 5 minutes, you will reach a maximum size, which looks to be about 15x. It doesn't stack with #5. It very slightly stacks with #1 (almost unnoticeable at max size). UPDATE: 8/23/09: As of patch 3.2, you will randomly stand and puke and get stunned when you try to drink this stuff, interrupting your drinking. Get another mug quick, and you might keep the chain going.
UPDATE: 12/6/2010 -- This drink no longer makes you larger, as of 4.0.3a (or perhaps earlier).
(?) Magister's Terrace boss effect (pending research) -- this guy generates wisps/sparks of some sort. Every time you kill one, you get a powerful growth buff, but if you get too many you explode. This happened to me once, and I got about 5-6x larger before I died. It would be interesting to see what would happen if I already had a few growth effects up at the time - the room has an enormous vaulted ceiling, but growth effects self-cancel if they activate where there's insufficient room to grow. This avoids camera problems and awkward clipping, but might also save you from the death effect of the over-buff in this case.
Using only effects 1-6 with no doubling, you'd be at least 5.14x normal size (3.42x for Alliance). With all three transporter effects and two Bom'bay effects, you'd be at least 11.4x normal size (4.92x for Alliance). If you happen to time it right with a Terokk fight for #9 (and as a plate wearer, odds are good you're able to hold the aggro to get the buff), the
Chosen One
buff will make you ridiculously huge (an additional 2.5x, so roughly 28x for horde, ~12.3x for alliance) for a dozen seconds.
So, it seems that in order to get as large as is possible, you need to be a lvl 80+ male Tauren engineer who wears plate (warrior or paladin or Death Knight), and you'll need help from a shaman, during the Halloween event.
Note: even if you're not a Tauren male, the largest PC, one of the
transporter malfunctions
you can get turns you into a random PC race of either side every time you teleport or sometimes when you simply relog. So it's still remotely possible you could max out your size by randomly turning into a male Tauren. As another consideration, there's a trinket that Terokk drops that can turn you into one of 3 models of Arakkoa, which are about as big as male Tauren, maybe a little bigger even.
I will continue to update this post with new effects as I discover them (or remember the ones I've forgotten about ;)). There's much to Northrend I have yet to see, so there may be even more effects to add to the list. I'm also hoping for a new Dimensional Ripper at some point, so it will be easier to stack 3 growth-effect malfunctions.
Bigger may not be better, but for some, it is more fun. :)(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##Kangi##DELIM##Locked at the request of the OP.

Gold, I demand a sticky.
P.S Looks like a lot of research went into this.
Consolidated from a lot of experimentation and reading of other posts, comments about various specific effects, etc. I really wanted an Ornithopter as large as the center structure in Shattrath. But alas.
Screenshots pending restoration of dead hard drive (or double-stacking Transporter effects, if they ever fix the bug that makes it nigh impossible).
PS - Updating Transporter Effect info with statistical info.

Gift of the Giants Is obtained by statring the quest
Raining Down Destruction
, hope this helps, and I'd love to see how big you can get your copter ;)
Thanks! Information added.

Heroism/Bloodlust is not a Shaman "totem", it's just an instant cast spell.
Nice attention to detail, thank you. Fixed!

currently the way I've found to be biggest is through
this brew
, it's available from the frenzyheart quest in scholazar basin "secret strength of the frenzyheart". the growth part of the brew can stack up to 30 times, however after stopping drinking the buff fades very fast, so you have to keep receiving more brew to maintain the buff.
Awesome, thank you! Can't wait to try this stuff.

Updated with Gigantic Feast specs. Wowhead is missing the ModScale on that, but I tried it last night in the Halls of Lightning, and it said 30%. Looked like 30%, too. Of course, I threw a Giant Growth potion on top of it, and confirmed that it does stack. So it gets #7 on the list.

Sorry to nit pick off topic here, but you're mistaken. An
ornithopter
flies by emulating the flapping of a birds wings; a helicopter is not an ornithopter.
Was bugging me too.

By the way, it's spelled, "Wowhead." Not, "WowHead."

Raining Down Destruction problem is that yes, gift of the giants goes away when you leave the area. And it's a pretty small area. That's the big thing in Wotlk, giving you cool stuff, but in a very small space.
Aww, that kinda sucks, but it may still be worthy of inclusion because of the duration. But it does mean you can't port to IF or Org to show off. Bah. This makes being big less fun.
