You have to stand in one spot approximately in the middle between the portal and the top of the stairs. Make sure you don't run around too much, or it won't complete. It took me literally minutes to figure this out.

It seemed to trigger when I was coming up the stairs from the bottom. It didn't seem to trigger while coming down from the flight point. Also, dead centre might have been needed too.

If you are having trouble, dismiss your orphan (use the whistle again), and then stand at about the 5th step from the top, at the center, and summon the orphan. She should immediately trigger the quest.

Try stand on the centre tile just after the top of the stairs before the portal and summoning your child, if she's out already just desummon and resummon her, then you should then get the update.

I don't see it here, but just in case anyone is wondering; you can find the DARK PORTAL in the Blasted Lands all the way South of Nethergarde Keep. Hope this helps!

Since this quest is obtained in -Shattrah- you have to visit the Dark Portal in Hellfire Peninsula and not in Blasted Lands ^^

Confirming completion with recent patch.

I had trouble with this quest at first.
The first time, I flew in via epic mount and landed near the portal. After summoning the orphan and running around to different spots with no luck, I summoned the orphan on the steps and headed toward the portal. I paused for a bit in the large square tile in the center at the top landing, just after ascending the stairs. It took a few moments of standing on the tile before the quest triggered.

On another toon, I took the gryphon flight master and summoned the orphan when I landed. She triggered(completed) the event when we hit the first bottom step on the stairs.

That was one of the funniest events I've seen. After completing the quest, a female gnome "warrior" came through the portal(?) screaming:

For our children and the future of the Alliance! The Legion shall not prevail!

And then *pooof* into the battle. One shotted of course... But it was funny. At least it didn't yell something like: 'For Gnomeregan'!

At the top of the stairs you'll see 3 tiles. Stand in the middle one and summon the child, the quest should complete.

NEXT QUEST LINE OPENS
3. Accept "Jheel is at Aeris Landing!" @ Nagrand 31,57 (map)
- Fly to Aeris Landing near Consortium people and summon next to Jheel.
- Turn in quest.

4. Accept "A Trip to the Dark Portal" @ Hellfire 85,47 (map)
- Fly to Dark Portal and summon at top of stairs.
- Turn in quest.

5. Accept "Auchindoun and the Ring of Observance" @ Terokkar 39,64 (map)
- Fly to the summon stone of Auchindoun (outside Crypts, Manatombs, Set Halls, etc).

- Run to Violet Citadel of Dalaran, take portal to CoT

- Run to 60,57 in front of Zaladormu (big dragon)
- Summon orphan and turn in quest

8. Accept "Back to the Orphanage" @ Shat 74,48 (Orphan Matron Mercy)
- DO NOT COMPLETE/TURN IN LAST PART UNTIL YOU ARE DONE WITH YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS!

As for me, a male draenei came out... with a BROOM... and then went ahead to join the fray in fighting the demons of the Burning Legion...

I did this quest on two characters, and both times the guy coming out of the portal had a wooden board with a nail in it. Yeah.

This one (with the wooden board with a nail) came out on me the second time I tried it and it was a night elf male.

That was one of the funniest events I've seen. After completing the quest, a female gnome "warrior" came through the portal(?) screaming:

Easiest quest ever!

You have to stand at the top of the stairs in the center. The location is 88,50. Just like all the others, the crowd makes it harder. You basically have to wait until your child is the closest to the magical spot during the cycle.

I had to run around the left side of the Stair of Destiny to complete the quest. Sorry I don't have coords. No add ons. THANKS PATCH DAY!

From what I've observed it's not so much WHERE you stand as WHEN you're standing there.

I ran around the top area of the stairs for a few minutes without any success, along with about 20 others. Suddenly all of the orphans made their exclamation of "By the light" or "No way" at the same time, regardless of where they were standing.

I waited a while longer and watched the same thing happen a few minutes later to the next group of orphan-herders. So it looks like this is triggered every few minutes and you'll get it as long as you're standing on the top landing of the stairway for a little while.

But where do you acuire the quest?

My guildies and I stood at the very top of the stairs for several seconds and ended up with the quest completing. We didn't have to go up to the portal. Others who went closer didn't get quest completions until they moved back. Let us know if this works for you!

Stand at the bottom of the stairs on the Middle title, unsummon and summon you kid
again and walk in a straight line up the stairs towards the Portal. when you reach
halfways towards the portal when atop of the stair it should complete. atleast it works for me :)

If it does not work the first time do not despair keep trying, worked for most of my guild now. :)

The orphan matrons are always trying to scare us with stories about how dangerous it is, with lots of demons, and people like you coming through it.
