Increasing Item Level Rewards in Patch 8.1
PTR

As the first major content release of Battle for Azeroth, patch 8.1: Tides of Vengeance is adding a number of new ways to gear up, as well as increasing the item level of rewards from existing activities. In an effort to avoid conflicting with December holidays, the patch is a staggered release; Tides of Vengeance goes live on December 11th and will add most of the new content, but Mythic+ and PvP Season 2 will not start until the new raid, Battle of Dazar'alor, releases in January, at which time the item level thresholds will increase to the new Titanforge cap of 425. We'll do our best to annotate which features go live when in our summary below.
Azerite Powers
With the launch of 8.1 on December 11th, several spec-specific Azerite Powers will be replaced by new ones, a full list of which can be seen below.

In Season 2,
many more new Azerite Powers
which do not replace existing ones will be found on new pieces of gear, and every piece of Azerite gear which drops
after
the raid opens will gain a 5th ring of class specific traits. Items already in your inventory when the raid goes live will not gain this fifth ring, however, so stockpiling Azerite gear beforehand is unnecessary; you'll need to acquire new gear to make use of the fifth ring (and get them at higher item levels!). You can use our
Azerite Power Finder
to help figure out which pieces of gear contain these new bonuses.
Warfront: Battle for Darkshore
A new Warfront, the
Battle for Darkshore
, releases on December 11th with Alliance attacking first. While it operates similar to the Arathi Highlands Warfront, there are a few new options and improvements (such as gathering
Holz
automatically), and new themes, with the Horde conducting an amphibious assault while the Alliance are forced to fight off a squadron of Goblin Destroyers; you can read more in our
Warfront preview
. As with Arathi Highlands, completing the scenario will award a cache containing a 340 piece of the new
Night Elf and Forsaken
themed armor sets, and completing the quest to complete the Warfront will give a 385 piece.
A new faction based currency is also awarded for participating in the battle, the
Dienstmedaille der 7. Legion
and
Dienstmedaille der Eidgebundenen
, which can be used to purchase several items including new heirlooms! Keep in mind that several PTR updates have tweaked these values, so expect some change before they go live.

New World Boss
Ivus der Waldlord
has returned from Alterac Valley to defend Darkshore against the Horde invasion, and will drop item level 385 gear, increased to 400 in Season 2. Similar to the Doom's Howl/The Lion's Roar world boss encounters, fighting Ivus is only available to the faction currently in control of the Darkshore Warfront, and Alliance will face an alternate corrupted version, Ivus the Decayed.
Because the Darkshore Warfront is said to become available on December 11th, with Alliance attacking first, it's expected that Ivus will also be available before the raid opens in January, which should give each faction one opportunity to encounter the ancient and potentially receive item level 400 gear early. There are also new rare mobs in Darkshore, similar to Arathi, which drop 355 gear.
Dungeons and Mythic+ Season 2: Reaping
The item level of both regular and Mythic+ dungeons drops are being increased with Season 2, as well as the new +10 modifier
Schröpfend
to replace
Befallen
. While the affix has not been fully tested yet, you can read some
speculation from Jdotb

The Weekly Cache will no longer drop Azerite Armor, but will instead always award a piece of non-azerite gear and the new currency
Titanenresiduum
, which can be traded to Thaumaturge Vashreen for various Azerite tokens or specific pieces of Azerite gear. We don't yet know the exact drop rate, but a target of 2-3 weekly +10 completions in order to purchase
Aufgegebener Azerithelm
gives us a rough estimate of 520
Titanenresiduum
per week. It can also be obtained by scrapping or disenchanting Azerite Armor, but only gear obtained after the patch releases, making it unnecessary to stockpile armor ahead of time.
Azerite Armor will stop dropping from the cache and you can start collecting
Titanenresiduum
on December 11th, but the items sold will be capped at 385 until Season 2 begins.

Specific 385 pieces: 0
Titanenresiduum
* In the most recent PTR build, these prices have dropped dramatically, with item level 385 specific pieces requiring only 675 to purchase, down from 3,250. Whether that is due to a change in the overall currency economy or simply making Season 1 gear cheaper is unknown. In either case, you're likely better off to stockpile the currency in preparation of Season 2, but take these numbers as temporary - the point is that you'll be able to buy azerite pieces in patch 8.1!
PvP Season 2
Engaging in PvP activities such as arenas, battlegrounds, and world quests will continue to reward Conquest, which will both contribute toward increasing your ranking and fill a Weekly Conquest goal which will award a predetermined type of equipment each week, just like in Season 1. Your PvP ranking will largely determine the quality of both end of match and weekly cache items earned through PvP.

New Raid: Battle of Dazar'alor
Opening along with the start of Season 2 in January, the Battle of Dazar'alor comes with its own set of new drops, and will serve as the trigger for activities across the game to increase their item level above the current cap of 395 to 425 (after titanforging). Below you can see a comparison between the item level of drops from Uldir with those from Battle of Dazar'alor for each difficulty.

World Quests, Emissaries, and Incursions
In Season 2 World Quests rewards will continue to scale up to item level 370, with daily Emissary rewards going up to 400. Additionally, whenever an
Incursion
is active, a quest will be offered to complete 4 World Quests in that zone, similar to Legion Assaults, and award a Warfronts Equipment Cache up to item level 400.
New Crafting Recipes
Several
new crafting recipes
have been added, including new food, feasts, alchemy trinkets, and item level 385, 400, and 415 armor of each class.
Gezeitenkern
from dungeons and
Atem von Bwonsamdi
from Battle of Dazar'alor will be used to craft most of these items, particularly the new gear, and each crafting profession has a series of conversion recipes to turn them back into
