level 85 epic sword. It allows for much future possibility in terms of unique and special items.

This is how Archaeology works:
You will get a "dig site" that will show up on your map. You will open your map and fly to the dig site. When you're there, you'll have to look for the artifact. It will show you how close you are, and you'll probably use triangulation or some other technique to find it.
You can get lots of fun items. Most of them are completely useless at first, but you will be able to get some powerful items using Archaeology, like the poster above me said and linked. You can choose which race's artifacts you want to look for, and most of the items you find will have an interesting little "story" behind them, like LokHor said.
Also, your Archaeological site will be only yours. Others can get in it, but you will be the only one able to "work" on it.

From what I've seen so far while leveling archaeology my guess is that all dig sites and all fragment locations are fixed.
We'll probably know for sure when addons like gatherer start supporting this new profession.

Looting artifacts actually gives experience. For those like me who get bored easily with leveling, this can be a fun alternative. It goes much slower than questing, but is still viable.
To give some perpective: Starting at level 80 on my hunter, I got to level 81 by the time I hit 200 skill points. No questing, just pure archaeology. You won't make it to 85 this way, but you might be able to skip a zone or two.
Just thought it worth mentioning. :)
EDIT: After all was said and done, I made it about 2 bars away from 84 when I hit 525. Definitely a decent alternative. Though since Archaeology has been buffed a bit and you can get 5 points per rare, my experience won't be the norm. At least it's something that one could do to take a break from leveling!

I quested in MH from 80-81, then i did 3-4 dungeons with the quests within them on my way to 85. Rest was Archeology only! :) It takes a long time, but Archaeology is truly addictive.. Also got my 10th rare, and the title "Associate Professor" 1 hour after I hit 85!
I hate questing, so this was truly another way to get to 85 :)

Here's what you should expect while leveling, based on my own experience leveling to 525 and then going for achievements.
• You get one skill-up for every set of fragments you loot, five skill-ups for every common artifact you solve, and
fifteen
skill-ups for every rare artifact you solve
until
about 100.
• At 100, you'll stop getting skill-ups from collecting fragments, making the five and fifteen skill-ups from solving common and rare artifatcs the only way to level to 525.
• Archaeology can be leveled anywhere or anytime you do it. You don't have to move on to higher level continents to continue past 300 and 375.
• Digsite locations are fixed and always spawn nearby matching doodads and environemnts. That is, night-elf sites are always nearby night-elven ruins, fossil sites almost always are surrounded by several half-buried fixtures of bones, vrykul sites are always found in active vrykul villages, etc.
1 - 300
The first big chunk has to be done in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms, excluding Cataclsysm zones. Digsites in Outland won't spawn until you reach a skill of 300. Similarly, 375 for Northrend, and 450 for Cataclysm zones.
Kalimdor has mostly night-elve digsites; they're the most common by an enormous margin and can be found all over the continent. Fossils are the next most common, but they are found almost entirely in the southern half of the continent. There are only four or five troll digsites, and all of them are in Tanaris. Lastly, there's a single dwarf digsite at Bael Modan in Southern Barrrens. If you level in Kalimdor, get ready for night-elf after night-elf.
Eastern kingdoms has a combination of dwarf, troll, and fossil digsites. Troll and dwarf digsites both have a strong presence all throughout the continent and you should expect to find a more-or-less equal amount of both. Fossil digsites have about the same availability here as they do in Kalimdor, although their digsites are more spread out.
300 - 375
Digsites in Outland become available once you reach a skill of 300. Outland is actually a pretty nice place to level because it's the smallest continent, it has only two races: orc and draenei, there are no digsites in Blade's Edge, and all of the artifacts have at least two keystone slots. The only downside is that common artifacts here take 45 fragments, up from the 30-36 it takes for the 1-300 types.
375 - 450
Digsites in Northrend become available as soon as you reach a skill of 450. Northrend has nerubian, troll, night-elf, and vrykul artifacts. There are vrykul digsites in Northrend like there are night-elven digsites in Kalimdor: they're everywhere and odds are they're all you'll be digging up. Troll digsites in Northrend aren't uncommon, but they don't have anything close to the presence of vrykul. Nerubian digsites are sparse and spread out across two or three common areas. Surprisngly, night-elf artifacts are actually pretty uncommon here.
450 -525
At 450, digsites in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms have a chance to spawn in the new Cataclysm zones, that is, Mount Hyjal, Uldum, and Twilight Highlands. Unfortunately, they share the same four digsite maximum with the rest of their respective continents. Uldum has only tol'vir digsites, and tol'vir digsite spawn only in Uldum, making tolv'ir artifacts sort of hard to come by. Mount Hyjal has even more night-elf digsites, and Twilight highlands has a bunch of dwarven digs. Deepholm and Vashj'ir do not contain digsites.

Outland is a very good place to power level Archaeology. You are guaranteed 2 tablet slots. You don't stop getting points at 375 either. (Well make sure you get your training past that) :).
So yeah keep on farming outland and only solve when you have two tablets to enter in those slots.

I've noticed that some digsites are 'bugged'. They point out of the digsite while standing in the very edge.
I've made a couple tickets about this, but before I received an answer it would always have fixed itself.
So I tried a couple of things and what I've discovered is that once a digsite is 'bugged', go to the next digsite, survey it, loot the artefact(s) and then go back to the 'bugged' one, it'll have somehow reset the digsite.
Hope this helps, I know it will certainly help a couple of my guildies.

I've noticed each of the dig zones seem to have common artifact locations--I'm not sure if this means that there's like 10ish possible artifact locations in each dig zones or what. Lately I've been recording artifact locations via TomTom addon. If anyone is interested in this, what you need to do is:
Download TomTom from Curse.
Go to "Interface" > "Addons" > "TomTom" > "General Options" > Set "Clear waypoint distance" to "0"
Whenever you find an artifact at a dig location, "Right Click" the TomTom coordinates box and it'll save a waypoint at your current location.
Later on, when you come back to this location, you can try your waypoint spots to check to see if the artifacts are found in the same locations.
I can't really verify this is exactly how Blizzard did this or if it is just totally random and artifacts can spawn at any point in the digsites. I suppose if others try this and find a trend it could be useful information (until Gatherer is configured to work with Archaeology).

only 1 thing I can say that, This is seriously hard , rare and RNG
i capture a vdo when i solve 8XX trolls only artifact since my skill was 470

i recommend anyone who are not start doing archaeology yet, go find something else to do. it very time consuming and hopeless sometime.

I would like to point out, since I have not seen a comment for it anywhere else, in cataclysm dungeons (once I hit 450 arch) you can turn in one of the "keystone" (
Tol'vir Hieroglyphic
Highborne Scroll
Dwarf Rune Stone
)artifacts for a
10% damage
buff. I recently hit 450 so i have only done a couple dungeons since but...
Throne of Tides - Night Elf - 10% increased damage to Naga
Blackrock Caverns - Dwarf - 5% reduced elemental damage
Grim Batol - Dwarf - 5% increased crit
Lost City of the Tol'vir - Tol'vir - 10% increased damage to Nesferset
The Stonecore - Dwarf - 5% reduced physical damage
Vortex Pinnacle - Tol'vir - says, "heals your wounds and replenishes mana slowly over time"
Halls of Origination - Tol'vir - 15%? increased movement speed - thanks Deadlyspork
I could not find any quests for Deadmines, Shadowfang Keep
Also note, they work for the GROUP, definitely bringing one to every heroic I run.
Note that all the buffs are in the instance only and they are
dailies
.
I do not personally know if they persist through death
After testing I can say they DO persist through death and the quests reward gold as well.
Hope this helps and makes archaeology a skill more people would want to get =)

Archaeology is sick, were back to vanilla wow mindless farming x10. I have spent 70 hours with this profession to get my 1h sword and its nowhere close. I have hoarded Night Elf, Troll, Fossil and Dwarf fragments since i dinged 525 skill and sofar i have 5300, 900, 2500 and 450 fragments of the respectivley gathered and ive gotten 2 epic tolvir items and 32 commons. Atm im on a 12 commons spree without getting an epic randomized...... the frustration is enormoussssssssssss.

Does anybody know if increasing your level in arch (grand master, artisan, etc) increases the number of artifacts you find? I trained grand master and now I'm finding six at a time. Never noticed that before.

Uhh So I Don't Know if theres any Speculation of This But i Have a Hypothesis of How to Get a Certain Artifact, Sounds Crazy But Just Stand By me For a Second.
Ive "Noticed" That Certain Times When You Slave an Artifact The next on the List has a Somewhat Relationship too the Area At which you Solved the Last. Know I Only Have Certain Kind of Data, i guess is the word to Somewhat back this.
I Did Troll Archaeology a lot from 0-300 Because i didn't Know i Had to have 450 at least to Get the 2h Axe However I never Once Got

I have not noticed any information about the average finds of artifacts for leveling up your character. i just start to find out that it is the same. where i calculated from level 73 - 74 you need 1.257.000 exp on this level. One find of artifacts you will gain 6695 exp "not rested" from my calculation. I get 1.257.000: 6695= 187,75 finds of artifacts for leveling up from 73 to 74.
An other character was 75 so i did the same. From 75-76 you need 1.283.000exp on this level. One find of artifacts you will gain 6828 exp. So 1.283.000:6825=187,98 so also 187 finds to level up.
I was wondering if this counts for all levels of your character that you need to find 187 artifacts too level up.
Oh and this is with some guild perks, and heirloom chest and shoulder extra experience gaining.

Would have been nice if you had the chance to see like 3 proposed projects instead of just one random. That way you could increase your chance to either get commons you need for achievements, or rares you would use for fun or profit.
I know Arch is a pretty random profession, but everything can be improved.
Or at least a code-snippet like
"if you haven't got all commons, then give them a high chance of the commons yet to find" (rare chance would be possible) (mainly aimed to give you a chance to complete
diggerest achievement)
"if you got all commons then give either a rare they haven't found OR a common worth at least 5-10g instead of 1g" (mainly to at least give you minimum 5g instead of a 1g item if you already have all 1g commons)
"if you got max skill in Arch then give extra fragments" or "able to select one of three proposed research subjects instead of 1 random"
Or I suppose we could keep it as it is now with total random and a lot of hair-pulling ;-)

It seems to have been buffed. It appears 9 is the maximum amount of shards per one find (you still only get 3 finds per site), and that is for non-dwarves (it's relevant that it's a non-dwarf because dwarfs get a bonus amount of shards.)
