Cogwheel sockets fit gems such as this. It seems that the amazing stats on these gems are countered by the fact that the helm has none itself.

These goggles are amazing. They are slightly better than the first tier set at 85, and you can customize which stats you want on them. And they can be equipped at 81, so if you can somehow gather the mats to level eng you'll have a nice time leveling with really awesome goggles :)

Edit: And you can easily exchange Cogwheel Gems to alternate between tanking or dps...

Considering that tanking and DPS gear have the same magnitude of primary stats on them (Strength and Stamina for us plate-folk), these are easily interchangeable between the two depending on the cogwheels you use. I personally will be throwing in a tank/DPS-ambiguous Mastery and Expertise for my tanking so that I don't run into diminishing returns on my whopping 208 of the stats, AND they could be used for a DPS set if I ever build one.

The only qualm I have is that, even for us tanks, the socket bonus is 20 strength. It's not a dealbreaker if you love engineering as much as some do (and in fact it's hardly something to even give a second thought), but it's at least worth noting.

My engineer is maxed out, but can't learn any of the killshades from any trainer - does this require goblin or gnomish engineering or what?

You may need to be 85 to learn them, I have an 81 and cannot learn them.

Hands up if you're still wearing these, though mainly for sentimental reasons in my case.
Hopefully next expansion Blizz will give us goggles and guns (especially str/stam guns) which are more useful after the first or second content patch.....
