For a duel-wield Death Knight tank, this enchant is something I would most certainly consider.
Lets compare it against some other alternatives:
Blade Ward
- + chance on hit to gain +200 parry rating and deal 600-800 damage on next parry.
Accuracy
- +25 hit rating and critical strike rating, making for useful threat needed in duel-wield.
Swordbreaking
- +2% parry and 50% reduced disarm is handy in terms of raw mitigation.
Potency
- +20 strength, feeding into attack power and parry.
Blood Draining
- + chance on hit to heal yourself on melee swings when below 35% health.
Fallen Crusader
- + chance on hit to gain +15% strength increase and +2% heal.
Titanium Weapon Chain
- +28 hit rating and 50% reduced disarm is handy just as mentioned above.
Mongoose
- + chance on hit to gain +120 agility and increased attack speed, with agility feeding into dodge and armor.
Listed above are enchants I feel Tanks that use one-handed weapons would consider.
Now, lets deduct and see what is beneficial and what is not for a duel-wield Death Knight.
Potency
and
Fallen Crusader
are rarely if ever used for a Death Knight, seeing as only 25% of your strength feeds into your parry rating. As a duel-wield Death Knight, hit rating is always something that must be considered dearly, making
Accuracy
and
Titanium Weapon Chain
stand out. However, despite having more +hit rating, I would choose
Accuracy
over the latter, as disarm attempts are rarely if ever used in recent mechanics in raids, be it on trash or boss mechanics. For the same reason, I feel that
Swordbreaking
would lack against
Blade Ward
. The others worth considering are
Mongoose
, which gives a nice boost to your dodge and armor, and
Blood Draining
, a mechanic which may save you in the most dire of situations.
There are some discrepancies that make choice difficult. One is trying to pick a combo of these for your weapons as a duel-wielding Death Knight Tank. Another is trying to figure out what exactly you need the most and what you would benefit from the most. Another is considering which is better: consistency or procs. In terms of
Swordbreaking
vs.
Blade Ward
, I would choose the latter. 2% parry is amazing, we can all agree on that. But 200 parry rating is nearly 4% if my calculations are correct. Also worth noting that your next parry will deal 600-800 extra damage, and when you parry, you gain
Rune Strike
, which gives 150%. So in terms of threat generation, as well as amazing proc mitigation, I would choose
Blade Ward
over
Swordbreaking
.
If I were to choose a combo, it would most probably be
Accuracy
and
Blade Ward
. Though I would most certainly like to test
Blood Draining
, preferably on my fast off hand weapon. As a means test on heavy physical bosses, I can see this being an amazing weapon. Thankfully I have two
Last Laugh
s, and am praying for
Broken Promise
on reset. If all goes according to luck, I could very well alternate between one
Last Laugh
with
Blade Ward
, and one with
Blood Draining
. But, as of right now, if I was forced to choose between
Blade Ward
and
Blood Draining
, I would pick the former.

With the damage being physical you will see slightly lower numbers. However it will fairly certainly be affected by talents like a paladins One-Handed specialization (passive +10% dmg passive) or debuffs on the target like savage combat (rogue +4% dmg debuff). Very likely even the sparks on malygos and similar buffs.
I am going to do testing on actual numbers as a prot paladin as soon as 3.1.0 hits, both in normal and raid inventory.

Clicking on the spell description and then on the see also, I came across this:

So it's a 100% proc chance? We've seen sketchy wording like this before, for example,
Sigil of the Unfaltering Knight
before stated that it was "chance on hit". So are we to expect the same, or not?
I'm confused to say the least. Is it a 100% proc chance or bad grammar on Blizzard's behalf?

As a DW dk tank, if you have this enchanted on both weapons, does the effect stack, as mongoose does? effectively granting you 200 parry rating for each weapon that procs the effect?

The effect stacks with itself. I had it stack up to 4 times - IE, 800 parry rating and ~3000 damage - on a test dummy.
Pity the test dummy didn't try to smack me :P

Tested this tonight on razorscale with a 1.6 weapon.
Out of 259 melee swings, 101 hammer of the righteous hits (these hits count as melee swings and should proc it) I had blade warding proc 13 times with an average damage of 773.
Only doing 773 damage means that it never went past 1 stack and in most tanking situations it will not go past 1 stack.
I have 3/3 1 hand spec and 0/5 reckoning and had icy talons up the whole time.

We just got this enchant recipe from Deconstructor a few nights ago. Our MT now has the enchant on his weapon and we haven't been able to fully test it quite yet. I'll check the WWS reports after our next raid and throw out some numbers.

So general consensus on this enchant seems to be that Mongoose is still a superior damage reducing enchant due to more reliable proc rate (Full Mongoose benefit is less RNG dependent) and the overall superiority of Dodge Value to Parry Value? Just trying to figure out the best way to go for my survivability weapon.

I got this enchant today on live servers, and I can confirm that the parry buff stacks.
I think this is currently the best paladin enchant if you AOE tank a lot.
eg: kologarn adds, XT pummelers, razorscale adds, and so on.

I testet both new Ulduar Weapon Enchants. Blood Draining took 5 minutes to get results. Blade Ward took me 1h and 37 mintues, till rng was small enough to not have that huge impact at the results.
Enchant Weapon - Blood Draining
Overview:
Your attacks and bleed effect sometimes grant you "Blood Reserve", which heal you for about 400 hp per stack, whenever you health is below 35%.
In-depth:
This Enchant has a
hidden cooldown of exactly 10 seconds
and a
procc chance of about 50%
on every hit and bleed attack. The buff has a duration of 20 seconds and stacks
up to 5 times
. This means that it will take at least 40 seconds to build up the stack, because the hidden cooldown prevents the procc, and another 10 seconds to start a new stack.
Each procc adds 360-440 healing to the stack.
According to this and assuming it will procc instantly after cooldown went off, this enchant is worth
40 HPS
.
IMO this enchant is crap, cause ~2000 heal isn´t that much and 50 seconds are too long for this tiny heal.
Enchant Weapon - Blade Ward
Overview:
Your attacks sometime grant you "Blade Warding" which will grant you 200 parry rating per stack with a duration of 10 seconds. If you parry an attack while you have this buff you will additionally deal ~700 damage per stack to the attacker - this will consume the buff.
In-depth:
This Enchant does not have a hidden cooldown and can
stack up to 5 times
. Sometimes each of 4 hits in a row procced the enchant and sometimes it took 3 minutes for one procc. During my test I attacked with the enchanted weapon 4000 times. The procc occured 111 times which is equal to 2.775% of the attacks. It took 107 minutes to perform this test. According to this the
chance to procc is about 3% or 1 PPM
. Due to there is no cooldown, a raid enviroment will have massive impact on the efficiency of this enchant. Assuming your are a warrior you will use a 1.6 speed weapon and a shield. In a 5 minute fight with common raid buffs you will perform 225 white hits and one style every GCD. These attacks will result in ~13 proccs in these 5 minutes. If the enchant proccs only after the last procc went off by parring an attack, you will have the additional 200 parry rating for ~43%. If we keep the calculation this simple the enchant is worth
86 parry rating and 30 DPS.
Its not possible to calculate this enchant more exactly. The buff can be refreshed short before it would went off, which will make the enchant more efficient or a buff with 5 stacks which grants you 1000 parry rating can went off, cause every attack at you was dodged and then 1000 parry rating arent worth anything. Due to the huge DR on parry rating the efficiency of 200 parry rating depends on your gear. Additionaly the parry rating granted by the enchant will increase the number of your attacks due to the mechanics of parry-haste which will increase its efficiency by itself.
Even millions of attacks with this enchant will not clearly determine how much this enchant improves your avoidance.
IMO this is the best avoidance enchant, cause it´s the only real avoidance enchant.

I've been using this on my
Slayer of the Lifeless
and am incredibly happy with the results,
proc rate and parry rating are very good. When spamming
HS
or
Cleave
with the proc I see
twice as many hits which = quite a bit more
threat
. (aside from the obvious avoidance bonus)
But I'm considering this for my
Black Ice
in use in BGs/

I just got this enchant yesterday and at first glance it's kind of dissapointing.
- Ive never seen it stack at 2 or higher.
- According to recount, it didnt do any damage during Emalon, tanking the adds.
- On a target dummy, it took roughly 10 to 15 attacks before it procced even once.
- When it does proc, it gives roughly 2.3% parry.
Don't know if they changed the enchant in a recent hotfix, but it's kind of underwhelming right now. I wish it would stack like in all the previous comments, especially for the steep price of the enchant.

As some people have mentioned the value of this enchant is decreased by the diminishing returns on parry. However,that is assuming you're gear is already providing a "high" amount of parry (though I won't attempt to quantify what would be considered "high"). Essentially, this is great for filling in the parry gap if you're gear is primarily dodge oriented. Additionally, the less often you're parrying the longer you keep the buff so that's something to keep in mind, considering with having this enchant you could purposely avoid parry gear to maximize its potential. If you're not seeing this stack much your parry may be overpowering your other avoidance stats, causing it to trigger more than your other avoidance abilities and consuming the stack. I see this being especially great for paladin tanks that are oriented towards high block/dodge, especially if this can be proc'd by HoR.

2k extra effective health when you need it the most is a "bad enchant"? You do realize if blood draining were +2000 hp, every tank ever would be running around with it.
Maybe you'd rather have mitigation or threat, but blood draining is very far from being crap; its one of the best tanking enchants in the game. Hell even tankspot endorsed it.

Most important thing with this enchant I've found, when the Blade Warding buff is up, and you parry (to remove it and do the damage), your character does a spinning slash, like a heroic strike, looks pretty cool on a draenei female paladin tank

Are you kidding me? Maybe in Naxx, where you could block 25% of a bosses hit (or 100% on Loatheb), but the difference between blocked and full hits in Ulduar is so insignificant that I've basically stopped paying attention to BV unless it comes "free" on gear with no block rating. When a boss is hitting for 17k+ and you're blocking for 1.5k you better believe the difference between a blocked hit and a parried hit is pretty significant.

Druid
Can't parry. :/
Death Knight
Really. Shell out several hundred gold for mats to pick up a negligible dps boost and an occasional and fleeting +200 parry rating (4% before DR) when you have massive DR already? As opposed to taking your totally free, constant 4% parry from
Rune of Swordshattering
? Ummmm ... no.
Paladin
Protection paladins get the short end of the stick when it comes to tanking enchants. They only have one instant weapon strike, and it has a six-second CD. (Yes, it's AoE, but on bosses that doesn't count). This means that any enchant with a proc will go off at a rate only slightly better than its base ppm, greatly decreasing their relative value for pallies as opposed to classes which actually use instant strikes. That being said, there are precious few alternatives--mongoose, +26agility, +20 strength, accuracy, and blood draining (with its troublesome potential to interact unfavorably with
Ardent Defender
), so this might be worth trying.
Warrior
Warriors don't have the DK's obvious choice of a rune or massive DR on parry rating, but they do have far more instant strikes (and therefore get far more procs) than a paladin, making this enchantment far more valuable to them than to the other classes. if anything, this is a warrior enchant.
That said, it's still not very good. The DPS is utterly negligible--any of the other potential tanking enchants except Blood Draining would have nearly as much, averaged out--and the actual avoidance is infuriatingly difficult to calculate, but in any case quite low. 200 parry rating is roughly 4%, before diminishing returns. Each player will have differing amounts of parry rating, and therefore different losses to DR. Furthermore it disappears when you parry--if your parry was 16% anyway (a very, very low figure for most tanks), then a proc will boost it to 20%. But even with this exceptionally low starting figure for parry rating, 4 out of every 5 parries that occur with the proc on would have been parries anyway. Since it disappears immediately on successful parry, this would put your net avoidance at one parry per every 5 procs, assuming you managed to parry something every time (which you might not). Granted, due to the way that a hit roll works, it may mean that certain rolls become dodges (which do not cancel the effect), but this is nearly impossible to calculate, and in any case still quite low. in short, the total evasion provided is ridiculously low, and the damage is less than one white swing per proc.

I've heard rumors that the proc rate might be buffed in 3.2, However I've read this on a Paladin tanking community. The new changes to Seal of Vengeance might be the cause to the increased proc chance.

Completely and utterly not worth it as a prot paladin. Go for weapon chain or the hit/crit enchant instead. Utter garbage. 3.2% chance to parry for me when it procs, per stack, but since we really have no "weapon attacks" and instead rely on spells, it doesn't help proc the thing at all. I could see this being ok for a warrior or DK offtank - as maybe this was intended more for offtanking, stacking up the parry, and then if you had to taunt, the parry chance allowing you a better chance at surviving once the healers swapped to you.

After a fair bit of use, I've found that damage wise, during a couple of naxx25 runs, blade warding contributes between 1% to 1.4% of my overall damage. not a great deal, but its better than nothing.

I just ran a VoA where i was tanking the adds on Emelon. This procced once for me the entire instance with a parry rating of 18%. The proc rate on this enchant is horrible, imo. Definitely not worth the 350g i paid for the scroll in the AH.

Has anyone else noticed a High Proc rate in 3.2? Im a Prot pally Myself and picked it up cause id rather have a spurt of More Avoidance cause of High hitting bosses. Anyway I have noticed it up alot more, anyone else?

This is an excellent enchant for both Prot Warriors
AND
Prot Paladins. Being able to keep the buff up is not an issue and it is an excellent buff able to stack up to 5 times. I myself have had it to 3 stacks producing 2.4% Parry per stack.

I tested this on my rogue. I enchanted the weapons Thrash Blade and Flurry Axe with Blade Ward (and yes, this does mean that it is not restricted by the item's level either). I attacked a dummy for about 10-15 minutes and never at any point saw more than 1 stack of pancakes. Off-hand procs appeared to just add more pancakes to the existing stack as I got 5-pancake stacks fairly frequently.
Also, for reference:
Fan of Knives can proc it
Feint does not appear to be able to proc it
Poisons do not appear to be able to proc it
Obviously, rogues are not expected to use this enchant, but you can use the above information to infer how Blade Ward might act with similar abilities.

Prot Pally 540 def, BoSanct, SoVeng, Impr Dev aura, R.Fury on
I could not see the effect of Blade Warding in the fight and decided to check in on the Dummies, both lvl 80 and Boss. I am unable to evaluate precisely the time up but it seems to proc decently (about 30% of time) and within 15 mins I have seen also a couple of 2 stacks and (obviously) not so often 3 stacks.
I have 278 hit rating (+8.48%), so I don't miss and my expertise is 23, so I may be dodged and parried but not that often (cap to avoid dodge is 26, leaving 9% parry chance)
I have 187 parry rating, giving me additional 4.13% parry, totaling 18.37%,
with one BW stack I get 21.26% parry (+2.89%), with 2 stacks I get 23.75% (+2.49% extra) with 3 stacks 25.9% parry(+2.16% extra).
I have 647 dodge rating giving additional 14.3%, totaling 27.09% dodge, and Libram of Defiance is up most of the time (roughly 90-95%), sometimes 2 or more stacks, giving +2.88%, totaling 29.97% (have not seen more stacks on dummies but in fight with buffs I have seen 36% dodge from the Libram)
Block is irrelevant here, but in this set 157 rating, adds 9.58% total 20.18% + Holy shield always (hmmm..) up Block Value 1049.
So this enchant is quite decent I think.
BTW any hints how to measure the proc timing better ?

- When it does proc, it gives roughly 2.3% parry.
This is going to be different for everyone since it awards 200 parry rating per stack of the buff. It doesn't say that parry is affected by diminishing returns on the buff itself, but it is something that most everyone in the tanking community knows at this point. So 200 parry rating for my newly turned level 80 paladin would be huge, while a very well geared tank in 25 man ToC will see much less benefit.
My suggestion is that this enchant should be used for tanks who are either not geared well, or have virtually no parry rating on their gear. Once you get to Ulduar level gear and beyond I would recommend Blood Draining as the enchant of choice. I just want to make clear that this is my personal preference and am not saying that Blood Draining is inferior to Blade Ward. I just believe that the effective health you gain with Blood Draining stays relatively the same in worth, while Blade Ward suffers from diminishing returns.

Is this really a good enchant for Frost dk who dual wield? I'm on the fence to have at least the main hand (slower) weapon have it. Someone please open my mind if this is a waste or a good choice. Is it even a good idea to have it on both for dual wielders? Will it stack if I have it on both?

I would guess this might (since I can't test this yet atm) be a very potent trash-AoE enchant, where more hits on multiple targets would provide greater chance to keep the buff up and have a higher chance to stack it past the first application.

If anybody is interested in knowing I have this enchant on my warrior and today (9th januar ´10) I got this thing to go to 5 stacks, twice. First time I was on Deathbringer Saurfang and the second time I was on Festergut, unfortunately I wasn´t being attacked in either time it got to 5 stacks and therefore didn´t see a 3-4k hit from it. It was quite fun to get to 5 stacks :P

what gives blizzard tried fixing it yet still seems a waste of mats.

Also please consider the following, if at any time you are not actively tanking and are instead DPSing (Tank switch, off tank) it is likely that you will stack this to its max stack, making it a valuable addition to the burst needed to peel of the boss in the next tank switch when you come in. (the damage, plus the accelerated auto attack from parry as well as the increased chance to mitigate the first strike, make it pretty valuable for this circumstances).

So basically this is how it works.
Assuming you had 1 stack up only 25% of the time, which is probably slightly higher than the actual uptime but ill use it for arguements sake. You would need to divide the benefit by 4 to give what could be considered a more static value to the parry value. Some parries are a given based on the static CURRENT value of any tank's parry as is given with their gear. This doesnt even take into account parry being pushed off the combat table for what ever reason.
Example:
2% parry / 4 = .5% parry
I know this has the ability to stack to 5, and in that case it would give you as much as .5% parry per stack or so depending on your gear.
As for the arguement of Blood draining, personally i favor this enchant in top end tanking situations because of the capacity to turn a tank with a standard 3.9 hits to die into a tank with 4.1 hits to die situaion.
Think of it like this
49k tank gets hit for 12.5k 4 times in a row, thusly equalling a little over 25% of his health pool.
His health should drop as follows:
36.5k
24k
11.5k
dead
Assume now that you have a full stack of blood draining procs, which is applied after about 45 seconds of the last use or from the beginning of the fight. The last survived hit that took place dropped that tank to 11.5k health, blood draining automatically procs, and increases the tanks health back to 13.5k and allows him to survive the final of 4 attacks with 1 k HP left over before incoming heals or an RNG based avoidance kicks in.
Simply put
Blood draining is auto proccing and has the potential to reduce the RNG factor of all encounters during the dangerous dips in incoming heals and during the avoidance failures. It wont solve the problem of under geared or played tanks or under geared and under played healers, but it gives tanks something they dont need to think about that is a static benefit.
Mongoose is a solid enchant with good uptime and a nice threat/damage modifier, but it relies on RNG, which is every tanks death. While mongoose is probably the best all purpose enchant in the game, it is probably not recommended for fights that already have spikes of tank damage.
Blade warding is an auto proccing enchant that is gives a negligable benefit on the average proc and has terrible uptime in general. The damage aspect is ok but not enough to edge out mongoose as a strictly threat based enchant. Additionally, this enchant is even more suseptable to the combat table dynamics as parry comes after dodge on the table and is STILL RNG based.
In short..........DONT GET THIS ENCHANT.

This was a really good combo with the combat rogue ability Riposte. (able to be used after parrying)
It took me forever to find even one person with the enchant that the week after I got it 4.0.1 came and removed Riposte. D:
I still use this enchant while soloing on my rogue and it's very good for keeping me alive. It's not THE BEST enchant, but it's very good.

The sad thing is that, while this enchant sucked in Wrath, in Cataclysm it's probably the best tanking enchant in the game that doesn't require Maelstrom Crystals (which go for thousands of gold each on my server).
