i love the lore part of the game, so uncovering things of the past to learn will be amazing. I also love how it will do nothing dps wise, would hate to see "LFM <dungeon> PST gs, achievement, and archaeology or i ignore"

"I though I'd post a 1st look at Archaeology. It is pretty simple. (So far) and this is what I have learned. Something I learned that I might also not be common knowledge is that there are only 4 dig sites in ever continent. (Northrend, Outlands, Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdom.) So 16 sites total at one time. But they change once you do one. (in that continent) Another thing is they can be really far spread out at time. I tried to log in and log out too see if the spawn points change and they did NOT. So that didn't work. Well this is my 1st look at it and as we know any of this can all change!"
Also as of 4.3
Don't solve any artifacts until you reach 50 skill. You will stop going skill points at 50 and once you do that you will have a ton of fragments. After you hit 50 Solve whatever you can, and you will earn so many more point then doing it before 50. When I shot from 50 points straight to 105 and found 1 rare item.

You can't do anything with orc, draenei, vrykul, nerubian, or tol'vir artifacts until you reach required level. (300 for orc/draenei, 375 vrykul/nerubian, and 450 for tol'vir)

Here is how you actually find artifacts...
After you've learned the profession, open up your map and zoom out to the continent level. Find the little shovel symbols on your map. Those are the dig sites. Go to one and use the skill that you learned with the profession.
A little telescope looking thing will pop up (if it doesn't, you're not at the dig site, or you've already found all the artifacts there). The telescope thing will point you in the direction of your next find. It will also have a color on top of a post. Red means you are far away, yellow means you are kinda close, and green means you only have a small bit further.
Move in the direction it points and use the skill again. Repeat until an artifact pops up instead of the telescope.
Repeat that process until you get an error that you can't use your skill anymore. That means there's nothing left at that dig site.

Just a hint, if you just dug up something. Use
survey
once again, if you're lucky there might be several fragments at the same spot.
Just after an hour or so I've gotten two fragments at two different spots and three fragments at one single spot.

My tips after a bit of surveying:
1) When you survey and get a fragment, re-survey before you take off.. Your new fragment location might be the same one you just did!
2) Signals when surveying:
-- Red Signal Surveys -- only accurate to about a 180 degree arc.. I recommend taking off, flying for 3 seconds (the CD of survey) and trying again.
-- Yellow Surveys -- fairly accurate (I'd estimate ~30 degree arc, depending on distance), Follow the pointer dead on for ~40 yards and re-evaluate (You'll get the feel)
-- Green Surveys -- Very close, but could still be ~25-30 yards away.. 2 Methods: 1) Walk and survery (can be slower, or can be faster) 2) Big steps -- Go 15 yards from your first green survey, if it points backwards you know amost exactly where it is.. otherwise, you just narrowed it down and can probably do method 1 from here.

So I have 1 interesting question, when you open Archeology, and you look that window, you can see 10 races to discover their fragments. But there are only 9 races to discover for now, Troll, Night Elf, Dwarf, Fossil, Orc, Draenei, Nerubian, Vrykul, Tol'vir. So the question is, whom does the 10th fragments belong to?

When surveying a new dig, always look for items on the ground, or ruins/objects that are natural in the zone. Even a patch of grass or sand that looks slightly off is a good clue to look for. From my experience, more often than not an artifact is located here!
This is nonsense, there are no modifications to the terrain that determines where an artifact may be located. Artifacts objects are not spawned until you're close enough to the randomly chosen coordinates. Spawn points may be predetermined to avoid object collisions or visibility difficulties, much like herb and ore nodes, however this statement above is equivalent to saying you know that an ore node is going to spawn at some random location you've never seen before because you can tell from the cut of its jib.

My experience with Archaeology on US-Bloodhoof:
To start, find the trainer in a major capitol city. Despite what WoWHead says, I have found trainers in Orgrimmar
and
Thunder Bluff, in addition to Dalaran. There should be one in every major city for ease of training, though it seems only the trainers in Orgrimmar and Stormwind give the appropriate L85 dailies for the profession.
Once you train Archaeology, check your map. You will see little shovel icons on the continent view of your world map; clicking on zone with a shovel icon in it will show the digsite you need to find, highlighted and circled in either red or grey (though the grey circle seems to be more a graphical glitch for now). Start heading there and you'll be ready to begin.
When you land in a digsite, you can usually tell right away what artifacts you'll get from it. Bones in sand or muddy areas signify fossils, Highbourne Ruins signify Night Elf relics, desert ruins for Trolls, etc. Kalimdor is high in Fossils and Night Elves, while Eastern Kingdoms has a higher proportion of Troll and Dwarven digsites, though you can find at least one site for each race on both continents.
For those of you starting this profession at 80, you'll find it very slow going at first as you criss-cross the continent to get to digsites. My advice is to go in either a clockwise or counter-clockwise circle around the entire continent, taking an "as the crow flies" approach to each site.
Digging for Artifacts: When you use your new "survey" ability, your character will drop a telescope and a box with a light on it. From here, you have two options to find the artifact. The first, orienteering, involves dropping your survey kit, and going in the direction the telescope is pointing. This method focuses on the strict direction the telescope is pointing in, and the color of the light: red light signifies a long journey (usually a hop halfway across or to the opposite end of the site), a yellow light means a short jaunt until the survey ability comes off CD, and green means you're fairly close (within 30 yards). There's a second, potentially quicker method: triangulation. While striding the edge of the dig site, you can drop three survey stations and focus on the point where all three directions intersect. This usually pinpoints the exact or approximate location of an artifact, but takes time to plot out the exact point or area; an addon could make triangulation more popular, but it's unlikely we'll see one soon.
Either way, when you find the artifact site and use your survey ability again, it will dig up the artifact instead of dropping your survey kit. Collect the item, and repeat the process two more times to exhaust the site. It's important to note that you apparently need to be within 5 meters of the artifact itself for it to spawn when you survey, otherwise you'll drop your survey kit and have to keep looking. However, as the cone of surveying is much smaller when the light is green, it won't be too difficult to find and collect.
When you loot an artifact, you get 2xShards at Apprentice (75), and 3xShards Journeyman (125) and above (currently confirmed to 227). After you collect your first shard for a race, the project will be determined and locked in (so you know exactly what you're working on). Once a project is completed, the item is awarded and can usually be sold for 5 to 20 silver (Note: You won't make any real money doing archaeology; this is strictly for fun and toys and lore), or otherwise utilized if it's a toy, pet or mount. Even if you sell the result of your project, your Archaeology panel will always keep track of the artifacts you've completed, and the associated flavor text and history for that artifact. Once you complete a project, another one will be randomly chosen from the available list. NOTE: Blizzard has stated that archaeology projects will not be repeated until all other
common
projects for that race are completed; currently, this does not seem to be the case on Live servers, as I have gotten a project history similar to Wand>Music Box>Coin>Music Box>Clasp>Music Box>Ring>Music Box on my Night Elf queue. Once this is fixed, you are guaranteed to eventually complete every common artifact for a race before repeating any project. This does NOT apply to rare projects, which have fixed "spawn" rates and can only be completed once per character.
Sample Numbers:
0 Night Elf Projects completed, 8 common projects and 2 rare projects available in the "pool": 80% chance for a common, 20% for a rare.
7 Night Elf Projects completed, 1 common project and 2 rare projects available in the "pool": 80% chance for the last remaining common project, 20% for a rare project.
Those are very basic numbers based on my experience with project completion thus far, though it's still subject to change this early into the expansion and profession.
Leveling Archaeology:
Each artifact you collect and dig up in the old world grants one skill point, up to a maximum of 75 points in the skill. After that point you must complete projects, which yield 5 points per project regardless of rarity or size (Confirmed with my two rares, Fossilized Hatchling and some Night Elf Mirror). Therefore, it's advised that you save your shards until you max out the Apprentice skill, then train into the next level and complete all your projects at once.
As you dig up artifacts, you have a chance to acquire Keystone items, which are essentially uncommon greens that fill in part of certain projects. At 80 with 227 skill, each old world Keystone seems to fill 12 shards on a project, with larger projects having more slots for keystones to be used. The most I've seen have been 3 slots on an 85 shard project. It should be noted that these greens are
not
souldbound, and can be sold or traded with friends. So, if your Tauren Paladin has a surplus if Night Elf keystones, but your friend the Undead Priest has a surplus of Dwarven or Troll keystones, you can easily swap them to complete your respective projects quicker.
Once you hit 300 with Archaeology, you can proceed to dig in Outland, home of the Orc and Draenai artifacts. Again, four sites across the continent will be chosen, and each site has three artifacts. When you hit 375, you can move to Northrend, with additional sites to dig up related to Nerubians and Vry'kul. Finally, when you hit 425 (possibly 450), you can start digging in the new Cataclysm content to discover more about the Tol'Vir.
It's worth noting that while you can only have one project going at a time on a particular race, you can have as many projects going as you have races in your Dig Book. Finally, as a level 82 on US-Bloodhoof, I'm netting 8500XP per artifact - while not the quickest way to level, it's still a substantial amount of experience just for digging in the dirt, and there's plenty of toys and items to be had if you're willing to put in the effort. There's also plenty of hidden areas added in the Cataclysm that you'll fly over while digging for artifacts, including an interesting island full of fellow Archaeologist NPCs!
Whether a distraction between heroics, a dedicated profession/hobby, or just a way to mix things up on herb/mining/skinning runs, there's plenty of stuff in Archaeology to dig for, and the back end design means it's less Random Number Generation, and more perseverance. Good luck!

My experiences with Archaeology have been mixed so far. From 1 to 100 it was exciting to pickup points with each dig. The realization that Archaeology took more work than fishing sunk in going from 101 to 225 but it helped me become better at it. I strongly recommend Archaeologists continue to dig and gather fragments until you have reached 100. After 100 you can start solving puzzles and gaining 5 point skill increases. Use keystones whenever possible to complete puzzles since not every artifact allows you to use them.
I have only concluded that there are three rules to Archaeology.
1. A red survey means there are absolutely no artifacts within walking range.
2. Artifacts are found on land and not while swimming in water.
3. Travel in direction a yellow survey points you for the duration of the five-second cool down.
The terrain you search on changes the results of your red surveys. On terrain that is heavily broken up with multiple levels such as Jintha’Alor, Slitherblade Shoreline, Valley of Bones, and the Ruins of Zul’Mamwe; the red survey tool is wildly inaccurate and you can find yourself making three to six surveys to before you get a yellow or green survey. I have found that heading in the general direction the red survey points you in on level terrain tend to lead you to areas where there are artifacts. Typically I would mount up on my flyer and head in that direction for five to six seconds.

It's been said before, but I wanted to reiterate: DO NOT SOLVE PROJECTS UNTIL YOU HAVE A SKILL OF 100. At 100, collecting fragments no longer offers skillups. With Cataclysm being new, it might not be easy to be patient, but it pays off. To put things into perspective, when I hit 100 archaeology skill, I was almost instantly at 175 skill from solving all the projects I could, including using any keystones I had.
As of right now, the Dwarf racial Explorer tooltip suggests that Dwarves get two advantages in archaeology. In practice, only one is functional at this time; the fact that they survey faster. Which is nigh on useless considering that Survey still has a 5 sec CD.
Wowhead's list of items that can be created shows a list of keystones for some items. This is an indication of the amount of such that you CAN use (to the tune of 12 fragments each), not what is actually required to make it. It is my opinion that you are best suited using them as able. If you get a surplus, advertise and trade with others for ones you don't have. I wouldn't recommend completing a project that CAN use a keystone until you have a keystone to feed it.
One last thing: When you survey, if your light is red, the direction it's pointing is not necessarily accurate. As such, don't travel too far before surveying again. Otherwise, you might find yourself on a seemingly senseless zig-zag pattern often.

Further clarification:
It seems that percentages don't change when a rare project is completed, from my experiences. My ratios in common to rare projects in the Night Elf area is 39 to 4, which comes out to roughly 9% of my projects being rares or epics. When factoring in that each time a new project is determined, the odds for Night Elf are always 73/27 and so 10% rare rate seems about right. I want to say that the odds stay 73/27 even when you only have one rare project left to finish, but I don't have the hard math to back up such a claim.
To put it bluntly, you will get every rare eventually, and have a much better chance of getting the rare you want in a reasonable amount of time through Archaeology, than you do getting a drop % mount in the same amount of time.
Another fact: I'm sure many folks are surprised initially that the Tol'Vir ratio is 54/46 for common to rare, and having capped at 525, I've found there's good reason for this. Even at 84 with 525 Archaeology, getting a Tol'Vir digsite alone is considered "rare", since only one zone in the entire game has the sites: Uldum. So even though the shard counts are identical to other projects, you'll see an increase in available keystone slots on projects for the Tol'Vir to speed things along. That said, with a 50/50 epic to common drop rate, it's well worth your time grinding other races until you get some sites in Uldum.
One final note: for those of you with outstanding amounts of patience (like me), due to the rarity of Tol'Vir sites, the lucrative abilities and stats of their artifacts, and the fact that every project has at least one, if not three keystone slots...you can make quite a killing off the Tol'Vir Keystones. I've been selling every one I loot for 1.5K on the AH, and they're snapped up within minutes by the lazy and rich players of the realm seeking a quick purple or vanity epic. In fact, they sell so fast I'm considering doubling my price, seeing as how I control the entire keystone market on my realm.
Remember when I said archaeology won't make you money? Well, apparently I was mistaken. If you're willing to sell the shortcut items, you can make quite the pretty penny from the profession.

Keep in mind that you can buy the green items associated with archaeology off the AH, though expensive as hell atm (100g - 400g) having a steady flow of them will make your leveling go much faster.
Like others are saying, im finding after holding onto four or so dwarf rune stones that i am now digging them up faster than i can use them. so be sure to use them liberally whenever available.
... something else alot of people are saying that leveling in outlands when they hit 300 sped their leveling up. while i can see the more circular nature of outlands being faster to traverse than the much larger old world zones. Without any zeppelins, boats or mode of travel faster than a 310% mount (other than A-52 / Toshleys teleporters) you will spend more time flying to and fro in outlands then you could if you were stategically using zepplins, boats and your hearthstone(s) in the eastern kingdoms.
Better loot available from old world surveying anyhow imo. When i can skip past outlands i intend to do so but for now im still hopin for one of the many old world epics compared to the what two? good drops from orc/draenei.
Havent seen a Tomb Raider reference yet, anyone else know of one?
Something worth noting, is that old world projects usually require 35 fragments for common projects and have a maximum of one rune slot.
While the 300+ skill sites provide common projects that usually require 45 fragments and have a minimum of one rune slot and a maximum of two.
Easily allowing one to level faster with a good deal of luck and/or resources.

While I may not have solved all archaeological rares, especially now that Mists of Pandaria has arrived, after hundreds of hours dedicated to the cause I can say this -
there is a method to the madness!
And I say madness because archaeology is one profession that should not be taken lightly. Get ready to dig... Lots.
Archaeologically speaking, the Night Elves
thoroughly
dominate Kalimdor, Dwarves and Trolls the Eastern Kingdoms, and Fossils neatly scattered across both. Outlands are only for the Orcs and Draenei archaeological finds. While Northrend is proving most interesting with Night Elvish and Troll Fragments popping up in addition to the expected Nerubian and Vrykul Fragments. For anything Tol'Vir, it's all in Uldum and Uldum alone. Unfortunately, dig site spawn locations in Uldum share the same continent as Kalimdor - maximum total of four. This means you're gonna have to keep digging Fossil & Night Elf Frags (among others) all over Kalimdor in order to possibly have the Uldum dig sites spawn. Mogu and Pandaren Fragments currently appear all throughout... you guessed it - Pandaria! Stay tuned for more!

Findings can be located on stone structures, such as at sets of ruins at times. Don't pass over them assuming you can't dig through solid rock or quartz. :)

I was leveling my alt's archaeology after hotfix, and it seems from the very beginning Survey is already possible to dig up 2 to 4 fragments. Also I've come across to have three digs in a roll at the same point. Never happened for my main, so I guess that's just possible but with very small chance.
Edit: At 75 it's 3 to 5 fragments.

I would recommend to level your 80 alts' archaeology as well if you like me have multiple 80s and if you are looking forward to specific rare item(for example, the troll sword).
After 450 the dig sites may show up in annoying place in the Eastern Kingdom, i.e. Vashj'ir.
Leveling your 80 alts has several benefits:
1. It helps to consume your alt's rest bonus.
2. The weapon is bind to account, obviously.
3. Save Keystone for your main.
4. You can only Solve specific race(like troll) and keep below 450 easily.
5. While digging you can also discover new flight points in Azeroth for your alts.

After digging up a fragment & looting it, be sure to Survey ontop of the spot where you just looted. several times I have come across another fragment "buried" directly beneath so to speak.

I couldn't see it mentioned anywhere so I have to ask the question. Once I've made an item - say the Atal'ai Sceptre - it's recorded in my log as having been made, I have an actual item in my bag and the title's in grey letters. Can I get rid of the item or do I need to keep that, too? I've only received items with grey titles so far but I don't want to throw away something I might need!

I couldn't find the 'spade' icons on my map the other day and really got confused about it......
There is a tick box on the bottom right hand side of your world map next to the 'Show quest Objectives'. Ensure this is ticked and you shouyld then be able to see the icons again.

Some help for leveling Archaeology: Aprentice - Master (1-300) in 14 hours
(Please note that this guide is for players who are at least level 70 and will be very difficult for those under level 68)
What's needed:
- Have at least 600g on hand
- Have Artisan Flying (280% Flight Speed)
- Be ready to fight opposing faction members
Getting started:
- Start in Kalimdor. Locate all dig sites. There will be four available at a time, and once you dig 3 times in one, another will appear in a random area in that same continent.
- DO NOT SOLVE ANY PROJECTS! It may be tempting, but don't do it yet, you'll see why later.
- Level your Archaeology through Apprentice and get it between skill levels 90 and 100 at Journeyman level.
- Once at level 90 - 100, stand right in front of the Orgrimmar/Stormwind Archaeology trainer and solve projects JUST UNTIL level 125.
- Purchase Expert level.
- Finish the rest of your projects. Each one will grant you +5 skill level, and rares award +5 to +20 =D
- You should now be close to 180 or even up to 190 (I was at 193 at this point)
- Continue to farm only in Kalimdor, and gain enough fragments until you know you'll achieve the minimum 200 skill level.
- Go to the trainer again and solve the projects until you are able to purchase Artisan Archaeology from your trainer.
- Purchase Artisan Archaeology and head out once again.
- Farm in Kalimdor and focus on Troll and Fossil fragments, as they yield the most beneficial projects.
- Switch between Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor as you see fit until you find enough fragments to level your skill up to 300.
- Go to your trainer, solve projects ONLY UNTIL 275.
- Purchase Master Archaeology, and continue to solve projects until level 300 is reached.
Congratulations! You can now extend your Archaeological studies to Outland! After level 300, you now must work to reaching level 525, but with this schedule, you'll make it in no time at all.

Don't solve any artifacts until you reach 50 skill
. Gain your skill ups only through digging until 50, when digging stops giving skill points. Then use all your accumulated fragments at once to level more efficiently.

Unless the
only
rewards you want from Archaeology are the fossil rares
avoid fossil dig sites
whenever you can. Fossil dig sites will continue spawning after you have made all the fossil items, and as you level you will eventually be drowning in fossil fragments. So the only time you should visit a fossil dig site is when you need to clear it off your map so another site will spawn - you will get plenty of fossil fragments this way in time.
Since more fossil rares have been added, I don't think this advice applies anymore. Of course, the same logic can be applied to any race if you're not interested in discovering any more of their artifacts for whatever reason.

If there's one particular item you desperately want
, find out what skill is required to discover it and save fragments from that race until you reach the skill level at which you can discover it. (Edit: Note that there is now a cap at 200 fragments. It still makes sense to save up those fragments, but go ahead and solve your artifacts whenever you're about to reach the cap, or the fragments will only go to waste.) For example, say you want
Tyrande's Favorite Doll
, a rare Night Elf find which can be discovered after 450 skill. While leveling, dig all the available Night Elf digsites, but level up by completing artifacts for other races until you reach 450. Then complete your Night Elf artifacts. This is likely to save you digging in the long run, as you are not wasting your Night Elf fragments before they could potentially be used to discover Tyrande's Favorite Doll.
- That said, be aware that
Archaeology is extremely RNG-based
and grindy; try not to drive yourself insane by getting obsessed with that one rare item. Don't plan your gear set around Archaeology finds. They are called rares for a reason.

Auto-fly from one dig site to another
while you read a book or alt-tab out to Wowhead. (Num Lock is usually the auto-run toggle.) Lots of people are complaining about the travel time; it feels like a plus to me because I get a lot of reading done. In any case, minimising the amount of time staring at your screen will make Archaeology feel a lot less mind-numbing.

Not sure why, but the Eastern Kingdoms are way easier to fly due to higher and more consistent altitude limits. In Kalmidor the upper limit is lower than the treetops in many cases. Setting a course and alt-tabbing out is problematic in Kalmidor, because either the upper limit halts progress or some obstruction like a tree or a zone-wall does. Every Kalmidor zone seems to have a wildly different height limit, so constant attention to pathing is required.

Tip: Use the Dalaran Ring of The Kirin Tor to teleport to Dalaran. Then use the Dalaran portal to get to the Caverns of time. That helps you get to the Tol'Vir items or items in the lower half of Kalimdor very quickly.
Also be sure to set your hearthstone at Stormwind/Orgrimmar and then unlock and use the portals to get to Hyjal, Twilight Highlands, and Uldum to quickly get to northern Kalimdor. Note: You have to do some quests before these portals open.
Gnomish Engineers can craft two portals that can take them to Gadgetzan (Ultrasafe Transporter: Gadgetzan

) or Blade's Edge Mountains (Outland

). Another Portal can be created to many places in Northrend (

Just curious if anyone has run into this yet, and if so, if it is actually related to the Archaeology profession?
Twice now I have been working on rare artifact completions, and twice now, at two separate locations (both troll dig sites) after I picked up a set of fragments, I had a voice play across my speakers. It says, "You will die".
I had another voice over happen at a a dwarf ruin, but I could not make out what it said, due to some unfortunate background noise drowning it out.
Can anyone else confirm they have heard anything similar while working on Archaeology? I am at 525 and have solved 7 rare artifacts at the time of this posting. The first time I heard the voice was after I was 525 and had solved 6 rare artifacts.
Update: Received a strange voice again stating "You will die." This time while picking up a keystone from a dig site. Troll. Confirmed with a guild mate that he also is receiving voice-overs when picking up keystones.
Edit: Downgraded? I don't understand. This is a legitimate question. This specific topic has not even been broached on this item as far as I can tell.

With the addon Archy unable to determine a more precise mechanics of excavation.
If the artifact is located in:
5 yards or less - the artifact is dug;
6-40 yards - light green, deviation of ±10°;
41-80 yards - light yellow, deviation of ±20°;
more than 80 yards - light red, deviation of ±45°;
Keep in mind that the game considers the distance in 3D coordinates (Archy in 2D, so when you use add-on should take into account the roughness of Locality).
Size of location really does not affect on the light bulb.

There is now a total of 69 digsites in Kalimdor with 16 of them in Uldum.
This mean that with no current digsites in Uldum you have a 16/66 ~ 24.24% (69-3 because 3 digsites is taken, and the 4th you're digging in can spawn again at the same place) chance to get a spawn in Uldum, a major buff from the previous 9/59 ~ 15.25%
Clearing all 4 sites you have a 67% chance of spawning a Tol'vir digsite.

The thing about High/Blood Elven culture is that it seems to be fairly the same since the Highborne. They were still a hereditary monarchy until very, very recently. It's more of a misnomer to call the artifacts Night Elf artifacts, as they still tell important stories of all elves.
You also have to remember that the majority of elves, with the exception of the Shen'dralar, alive today were alive or just a generation or two behind when these artifacts would have held some significance to their cultures due to Nordrasil/Sunwell. (Tyrande was around at the time of the sundering and Kael'thas was the grandson of the leader of the Highborne that were exiled by Malfurion.) Meaning a lot of these artifacts are from times in the living memory of the elves.
And yes, I'm aware that there is some question as to whether the Sunwell actually granted immortality. My point is that all elves are usually extremely long lived and what can be discovered about their culture from archaeology can be answered by simply asking an elf who was there or who is just a generation or two behind.
It would be more interesting to see human and gnome artifacts. Yes humans descended from Vyrkul and gnomes were created along side the Earthen (dwarven anscestors), but both races don't have nearly the life span most elves seem to. Meaning that there is a much bigger possibility of learning something not currently known about both peoples.
Or why are there only one type of Trolly aritfacts? Yes they started out as one empire, but have since split into many, many different empires/tribes/etc, thanks to the expansion of the elves, proliferation of the earthen and possibly the tauren.
My long winded point is this: While the elves have diverged culturally with each other, for them it has only been a couple of generations, and in some cases, within their lifetime. It makes sense that the artifacts aren't split yet. It would be more reasonable to a split between Vyrkul/Human aritfacts, Dwarven/Gnomish, or different Troll tribes.

Tips for painful repeated "Red" indicators:
If you get your first dig a red, then don't mount and move. Simply dig few more at that same spot.
You will see the indicator direction changes. It effectively reduces the target area of the next stop.
Once you are confidence of your next move, mount and go. You will usually get it close.

Outlands seems like an easier grind when it's available. There are only two races, and everything found can use at least 2 keystones. The downside is that the rares take a lot more digs to complete, while only allowing the usual cap of 3 keystones.

My method for making Archaelogy go a bit faster (in addition to other comments already posted here)...I'm a level 85 mage at around 200 skill at Archaeology now....
1. Create key bindings for "Survey" and for summoning your flying mount - it saves a lot of time over having to mouse over and click a button. I have a separate action bar for non-combat where I put these. I also have a few combat keys in case a mob attacks me. Initially, the mobs are low level so I typically ignore them, even if they are attacked me, as long as the don't interrupt my surveying. When I find the artifact, i will zap any that are still on me.
2. After you survey, run in the direction on of the telescope (duh!). Technique: If you point the camera straight down and zoom out, I find it makes it easier to imagine the staight line the I should run along. Alternatively, try to line up the barrel of the telescope with your character (i.e. if you were looking through the telescope, you would be looking at your character's back) to ensure you run in the right direction. It is not super-important to be exact, I have found this to be one of those time saving things since it saves on the number of surveys I do. It will seem like this takes more time at first but after you practice you will be able to line it up very quickly.
3. If the survey is green - run for a "relaxed" count of 4 in your head. This is usually enought to get me right to the artifact if I line up properly. If I get another green, I will run for 3 seconds, then 2. Since everyone counts at a different speed you'll need to figure out what works best for you.
4. If it is yellow - run for a count of 8 (or twice what you do for green). If you run in a wall during this time, just stop and survey again (to judge the direction) and use your summon mount hotkey (from step 1) to fly over the wall in the right direction. Just land on the other side of the wall and survey again. Same thing if you reach the bottom of a cliff wall. If there is an obstacle you can run around, do that and survey again on the other side.
5. If it is red - run for a count of 10 (2 and half times what you do for green). The direction indicator for red has some error in it so isn't worth running too far before surveying again. If you reach an obstacle, follow the same technique as step 4. (As a mage I also Blink here)
Other things worth repeating:
- Don't solve anything until you are no longer getting skill points for find artifacts
- Save the artifacts for the race that you really want the reward for - but as someone else noted, there is a cap of 200.
- Someone else suggested avoiding fossil digsites. I would say don't go out of your way for them but if they are nearby go ahead and use them - you still get a skill-up for solving fossil fragments. Once you get closer to being skill-capped I imagine it makes less sense to solve fossil
- Use up the "keystones" to get the skill-up - they count as 12 fragments. I don't see any reason to save them up.
- Also, fossils don't seem have a "keystone" fragment so that's another reason why fossil digsites aren't as beneficial as racial digsites.

- For the Edge of Madness bosses to be summoned you need a "High Level of Archaeology". The Archaeology skill required to summon the boss is only 225. Confirmed by being 224 and not being able to, solved an artifact and was 229 and able to. Blizzard likes to use increments of no less than 5 for their requirements. Enjoy getting the 225 archaeology to get some easy loot.

Note that patch 4.1 has added daily quests for Archaeology; these quests can be found in each of the Cataclysm 5-man dungeons. Because these quests require you to redeem 3 Key Stones from each of the races, it has become wise to save all of your Key Stones (such as the
Highborne Scroll
), rather than using them to solve artifacts (unless of course you are anxious and willing to use up your Key Stones to solve a rare artifact).

I don't know if this is an intentional or stealth change, but the Survey Skill seems to cap out at FIFTY now, not 100. I've been at 50 for over twenty surveys and not a single level up has happened in that time.
So, the advice that tell you to continue to Survey until you get to 100 need to be modified (sadly) to include the fact that it caps out at 50. My Archaeology Skill was at 50/150 the whole time, so unless it's a Skill bug (which is doubtful) we can conclude that it's time to start solving!

Now that we have all been doing Arch for a while, you have probably reached the point where you have solved all the artifacts for some of the common races (e.g. Elf and Troll). However, if you are like me you are probably still farming for rarer races (e.g. fossil or Tol'vir) meaning you still have to collect other fragments that you don't need in order to clear the trash sites.
I would suggest you stop solving artifacts from the races that you have completed. Just collect the fragments as you happen upon them, and then if blizz adds more artifacts in a future patch you will be able to solve many quickly. Note that there is a cap of 200 fragments, so solve once and a while, but try to keep ~200.

I've maxed out archaeology (525) and still grinding it (completionist obcessed - I must make one of every item from every race at least once! lol). I'm chasing Tol'vir fragments the most at the moment.
I have discovered a little flight-time efficient method. I start at the northern most digsite in Kalimdor, dig it out regardless of race, then move to the next closest one, rinse and repeat heading south. Eventually the newly spawning dig sites start moving south with only an occasional one or two popping up north again, so I whizz back and get them and drive them south as well. Eventually everything is dig out and all 4 of the dig sites are in the same place = Uldum.
I have dug out the 4 Uldum sites to find 1 more spawned there as a result, so it is possible to get 5 sites to dig there in a row.
I've found this also works with the other continents but to a lesser degree, as to drive them all into the one spot isn't quite as flight efficient, but it does still work somewhat.
For the most part I'm currently now only digging on the other continents as an occasional thing when I'm in the area doing something else anyway; as a short detour to get a dig site done isn't grindy at all but it's still helping gradually make the other race's items.

The time I saved is incalculable.
Incredibly easy to install and get up and running.
I would also suggest to not save any tokens for any one particular item as you are leveling the skill.
If you get them now or during a rare, it really does not matter. They all carry over and count toward your next project.
You are simply wasting time by holding on to them.

FYI maxing out your total fragment count does NOT stop that race's dig area from showing up. I thought I'd give it a shot since I have all commons/rares in a few races, so thought maybe maxing out the fragments would remove it from the rotation. All it does is the obvious, "I can't carry anymore.".

Archaeology is by far the coolest proffesion in wow. I currently have 2 commons left and 14 rares to go. Sanity is intact and i have a bunch of neat items that do little or nothing and a few items that are moderately usefull for characters i am leveling. I expect wow will be adding more items (i hope) with future expansions to keep this a fun aspect of the game.

I'm an alchemist going after the Recipe: Vial of the Sands, hence Tol'vir, hence Kalimdor.
Naturally, Uldum sites are relatively rare pops, and are my happy, hopeful moments when they do.
On the contrary, Desolace seems to favor me the most, somehow, with Night Elf sites there coming up at a much, much higher rate than anywhere else.
Yet, that zone is soooo out of the way from my Stormwind City home, though I can readily teleport to Uldum or Mount Hyjal.
Measuring from the map on my screen, to Karnum's Glade in the middle of Desolace, is 9 cm from Ramkahen, or 8.5 cm from Nordrassil, both demanding attentive piloting through altitudes high and low.
Occasionally, if I find a helpful mage, it is a not-much-shorter 7 cm from Theramore Isle, but quite an easier flight.

Archaeology was a real fun profession at the start but now I find difficulty to come up with the needed motivation to chase the artifacts.
First of all when you compare it with secondary professions (I'm excluding riding naturally) it is the only one which you can't create useful items and/or can't generate money. I think we definitely need more BoE rare/epic items which can either usable or at least good for enchantment. And also some more unique items that can be used for transmog for example.
Dungeon archaeology quests are good idea but if they can developed they would be real fun to chase. For example besides the spell buff you'll get if there would be a drop chance of an unique item with the similar spell on it which can be usable in all dungeons would be nice.

Just one more tip. As with any disc, the shortest distance between any point is from the center of the disc. I know the dig sites are not discs, but they're pretty close. So every time you land on a new dig site, go straight to the middle of it. There is a very big chance you get a yellow or green right on your first survey. That will depend on the area's size, of course. Some large dig sites, such as the ones in Tanaris, may get you a red one, but go in that direction and you'll find a yellow.

Archaeology in MoP's Beta
Rules
That might be for testing purposes but currently we get 6 digs per digsite (up from 3) with 5-9 fragments per dig (if you're level 525 archaeologist). I am currently lvl 534 archaeologist and have no idea if one gets more fragments with lvl 600 archaeology.
Skillups
If you were hoping for an easy Realm First! - seems that ain't gonna happen the way you planned. Old common artifacts give no skillup (not all races tested, but Tol'vir is tested). Don't know if old rare artifacts give any skillup. Common pandaren artifacts give only 3 skill points per artifact. I haven't checked any rare artifacts here either.
Races
We've got a new race - Pandaren and 2 more races are currently blank (gray) for me making it a total of 12 races.
I currently see 3 digsites in Pandaria (not 4 like in other continents), all in The Jade Forest (I suppose for testing, but maybe it's tied to some levelling or just coincidence).
All fragments I have gotten this far are Pandaren. All three of their artifacts needed 50 fragments each and vendored for 1 gold each. My speculation is that prices are to be changed, but 50 fragments per common artifact might be the policy for common Pandaren artifacts. The artifacts have elaborate texts and normal names and it makes me believe they are almost done (icons surely aren't made yet).

I may have a possible answer to the queries about what 1 of the additional 2 icons /races may be. I just got attacked in "The Arboretum" whilst doing some Pandaren archaeology by an Ancient Haunt elemental and it dropped a Mogu fragment. On checking my archaeology tab the last icon had lit up as Mogu so it seems that at least for the beta this is the last icon. It could be that these are only going to drop as loot rather than being discovered by the usual archaeology method. Or it may be that i just haven't been given a Mogu area to survey yet - I'll update when i get more info. Update- I've just had my first Mogu area to survey around "Terrace of Ten Thunders" so it seems like these fragments can be dug up or potentially drop from some mobs - only had 1 common Mogu project so far. Update- the statues in Mogu and possibly the stones in Pandaren survey areas can spawn the Ancient Spawn mobs that drop Mogu fragments.

Certainly a fun profession to pass your time with since fishing only brings fish and first aid only brings ...well brings nothing . It's even more fun farming the fragments with a mage alt since you can teleport anywhere on the map without having to wait for boats or ask for portals around , makes it so much easier.
Imo , there should have been more items on the list , the 359s are not bad as far as I am concerned but since most of us rush straight to rHoT to get the "latest fashion' these items are pretty much useless after the 3rd or 4th run that you have already got your hands on a 2handed/1handed blade already.
Would be nice implementing new items to the list of things you can dig, would be a primary-non-primary profession for many of us having fun gathering frags.
Let's hope they do add new things in the near future !

I think that Archaeology is the most useful secondary profession in the game
Also I think it is easier to do when you get a flying mount because you can get to your Archaeology sites faster.

Any plans for arch epics in Pandaria, it would be kind of disappointing if Arch didn't give cool stuff like it did in Cata... i leveled it on alot of my toons just for the reason that it would give them cool stuff.

If you do Darkmoon Faire, the monthly Archaeology quest
Fun for the Little Ones
requires 15 fossil fragments. For this turn in, you get 5 Archaeology skill (and other rewards).
In terms of skill up value, this is cheap, about half of making a typical common for the same 5 skill-ups, and ...
When commons no longer skill you up, this will still skill you up.
It is always 15 fossil fragments, so it is convenient to keep 15 fossil fragments unused and available when Darkmoon Faire gets near, ready to turn in.
You are offered this quest when you reach 75 Archaeology skill.

I'm curious whether anyone else has noticed the same pattern with archaeology in Northrend - namely a huge imbalance between the sites coming up for the races. Given that Night Elf and Troll sites already have Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms to spawn in, you would expect that the "Northrend only" races (Vrykul/Nerubian) would tend to spawn more often from what I assume is a random generator. In fact the opposite seems to be true - I have spent literally days shuttling around the same 5/6 Night Elf/Troll sites waiting for the other races to spawn. Maybe I'm just UNBELIEVABLY unlucky (hmmmm) or maybe someone needs to go and hit the machine a thump as it seems to be stuck in the same groove. A bit more balance would seem to be called for .

If you have the
Inscription
skill, your
Minor Inscription Research
will leave you with a stack of
Scroll of Recall
, which teleport you unreliably past level 40. This is a useful feature for Archaeology. You can every so often (20 minute cooldown) teleport to a somewhat random location (there are only a few targets of the scroll) and check the zone and nearby zones for new Archaeology sites. (Another beneficial use of the Scroll of Recall is that a high portion of the random teleports will put you in Gadgetzan in Tanaris. If you need a neutral auction house, you have a fair chance it will take you there.)

Can anyone tell what the Fragment increase from being a Dwarf is ? Is it a overall higher amount of fragments or just an increased chance at them ?

I do wonder tho. in the Archi page for the races, like Night elf, Dwarf, Tol'var. Theres a Empty looking slot Near the bottom that looks as if a Hat and a pick-axe with other stuff. Any idea How to fill in that slot. Or is that for if you complete every single item or something? I unlocked all the races To dig for.

I just hit 460 archaeology, and everything I've read says I can start in Uldum looking for Tol'vir artifacts at 450, but I don't show any dig sites on my map. I tried turning off all my mods, but it still shows no dig sites in Uldum at all, can anyone help me?

I cannot prove this empiracally but if you are trying to get that *last* rare item on a continent where you've completed all the other solves, but you keep getting sites unrelated to that race; try this...
Stop solving the other race items. At least, don't just solve them when you have enough pieces just for that one solve...
This might be a function of WoW trying to "help" too much where it doesn't factor in your desire to find/solve the rare items so that once you've got all the common ones possible on a continent, the new dig sites are spawned to help with *any* race item you are solving where you don't have enough pieces.
I have been trying to get my last dwarf rare to proc, but most of my dig sites were non-dwarf in EK for days. So instead of solving for Nerubian, Nelf, Troll, and Fossil. I let them build up and now I'm getting almost exclusively Dwarf sites. Every once in a while I'll get something else, but where before I was barely getting any dwarf, the change is significant.
So I'm not sure this is the correct hueristic but it has been working for me all day! If you're down to just the rares of one race and having the same prob, give this a whirl, if it doesn't work, you still have all the pieces to solve with, and you were going to farm there anyway, so why not?

Kk folks just hit proff title on worthless hearthstone"inkeepers daughter" by the way only good for looks cause it uses your reg stone at same time lol! Anywho,wats last icon on your archy tab where you see what you have as far as puzzles to solve? Looks like shovel/hat? Just for looks or something to unlock?

Druids rejoice! you can survey while staying in travel form (or bear form, cat form, or boomkin form) which can help save some time. I recommend using travel form when the light is yellow, flight when it is red, and simply walk if it is a green light. Also, while some finds (especially fossils) will be near the banks of a river, very rarely (if ever) are they actually under water in my experience.
