Ever since it's release in 2008, Thori'dal, the Stars' Fury has been a hot topic on whether or not it is actually best-in-slot for Hunters and today Veramos is going to clear up some confusion regarding the item. This bow drops from the final boss Kil'jaeden in Sunwell Plateau and Hunters will finally get a chance to obtain this legendary bow on

Original TBC Perspective of Thori'dal, the Stars' Fury
Dating back to 2008 and even up until today people still believe that
索利达尔,群星之怒
was nothing special for hunters. People claimed everything from the loss of DPS from Timeless Arrows, to the weapon speed being the reason for which Thori'dal was never any good. While there was reason for people to be confused originally, not many people understood how ability formulas worked and their relation to the bows themselves. Thori'dal has actually seen multiple versions before it's final release due to player feedback and even the first version of this bow was better than Golden Bow of Quel'Thalas, it was never actually worse.
Final Version of Thori'dal
Analysis of Thori'dal, the Stars' Fury Today
With todays much more advanced theorycrafting, simulators, and overall better players; we now know that Thori'dal is indeed best-in-slot. This is no close comparison either. Assuming the same player had both
奎尔萨拉斯金弓
and
索利达尔,群星之怒
and played identically with both they could expect to see a dps gain of anywhere from 250-300~ depending on the rest of their gear with
索利达尔,群星之怒
.
So what is the reasoning behind this? The biggest and main reason is the interaction between base weapon damage and steady shot. When you compare the two bows of Phase 5 side by side you quickly come to understand why Thori'dal is as powerful as it is.
The steady shot formula. When we take a look at steady shot itself we can see that arrow dps has absolutely no contribution to the damage output. Tier 6 4 piece further increase Steady shot damage by 10% making it even more powerful.
(EffectiveRAP * 0.2 + 150 + BaseWeaponDmgAvg * 2.8 / RangedWeaponSpeed) * GronnStalkerSSMod * RangeBaseDmgMod
The base weapon damage of the bow. Now that we have an understanding of the formula, when we compare these values side by side, and now factor in that Thori'dal's base weapon damage is much higher than that of Golden Bow we start to see where it pulls ahead.
奎尔萨拉斯金弓
- 204-380 Damage
索利达尔,群星之怒
- 356-524 Damage
The 2.7 speed of Thori'dal. While all of the bows used by Hunters up until this point were generally 2.9/3.0 speed bows. Thori'dal's faster speed of 2.7 coupled with the larger amount of static haste on gear will move hunters to a sweet spot of consistently using a 1:1 rotation and faster rotations such as 1:2/1:3/2:3/2:5 more frequently resulting in a much higher dps gain.
How Will Hunters With Thori'dal Perform vs Non Thori'dal Hunters?
Those lucky enough to obtain this legendary bow in Phase 5 should see immediate and rather large jumps in their performance relative to previous raids without it. While the learning curve of playing with a 2.7 speed bow again coupled with static haste gear making rotations a bit faster will take some getting used to; you should expect to reasonably see a constant 200~ dps gain.
Now there is another thing to factor in when comparing overall dps between someone with Thori'dal and someone without and that is melee weaving. Assuming player A with Thori'dal was just your typical hunter playing a standard ranged rotation versus Player B with Golden Bow while also melee weaving efficiently where applicable. You'd be surprised but the end result would be either a near match in dps or the melee weaving hunter pulling ahead slightly.
With that being said, if you haven't melee weaved at all until Phase 5 and you obtain
索利达尔,群星之怒
then I highly suggest you take the time to at least learn it for an extremely large dps boost.
Who Should Receive Thori'dal, the Star's Fury?
This will be where problems arise in guilds. Every single hunter will of course believe that they feel they deserve the first, and possibly only
索利达尔,群星之怒
they will see. Some guilds will have already decided who is receiving the bow since the start of TBCC while others will be fighting it out on the fly.
So, who truly deserves it? When we break things down further,
索利达尔,群星之怒
nearly the same dps gain for both Beast Mastery and Survival so specialization on the surface is ruled out. However, the vast majority of the playerbase can agree that Survival Hunters bring arguably one of the most important and noticeable raid debuffs in the form of
破甲虚弱
and that no one ever really wanted to be the Survival Hunter due to lower overall dps to their Beast Mastery counterparts.
With that being said I would reward your Survival Hunter for their service throughout the expansion, and bonus points if they also melee weave. In the end, the expansion and all of the content is cleared by this point. Reward the most deserving player of your guild however you end up determining that and enjoy the short time you will have with
索利达尔,群星之怒
