Amidst our adventures in aiding the Hallowfall Arathi, players can form a bond with their leader, General Steelstrike, and even attend dinner with her family!
Restoring Trade to Mereldar
While the main story covers the more direct threats to the lives of the Arathi, such as the nerubian incursions and the Order of Night, we help the citizens of Mereldar out just as much in the side quests. One such side quest comes at the request of Auralia Steelstrike, the daughter of General Steelstrike and the main quartermaster for the Arathi, who asks for our aid in re-establishing trade partnerships with the other denizens of Khaz Algar.
The player can be rather humorous in penning the letter to our allies on the surface, but we nevertheless send a missive to Councilward Merrix requesting a meeting on behalf of Auralia and the General. On top of that, we contact the representatives of the Trading Posts for each faction, who offer a window of opportunity not only to the rest of Khaz Algar, but the world as a whole.
With the letter to the Earthen sent out, we are tasked with setting the stage for an amicable reunion between the two groups, and gather supplies for Auralia to prove the value of trading with the Arathi. After culling bats for their meat, harvesting vines for their fibers, and clearing a resource-rich area of invasive hornets, we join Auralia and the General in Dunelle's Kindness to meet with the envoys from the surface.
After the misunderstanding about their loss of contact is cleared up (despite General Steelstrike's apparent misgiving for diplomacy), we set out the goods offered by the Arathi, and convince the emissaries of the Trading Posts to enter a trade agreement with the Arathi. With our role done, and plenty of praise given, we depart to seek other adventures.
Dinner with the Family
After a day's wait (in real life), we can return to Mereldar to find Auralia in a new position, in the middle of a conversation with General Steelstrike where they are discussing matters both personal and professional.
After the General departs, Auralia reveals to us that while the trade agreements with the surface world are improving matters, the General is still anxious about their state of affairs. In order to help her mother unwind, she is organizing a dinner with her family, and invites the player to join them. In order to aid in setting the table for the feast, we gather herbs and meat from one of the outcroppings below Beledar, and join the Steelstrikes in their home.
In order to properly enjoy a traditional Arathi dinner, we put up awards and mementos of the Steelstrike family to be honored at the table. Along the way, the various members of the family comment on their meaning, from tinderboxes and incense that honor the fallen to banners and trinkets that commemorate important events.
Once the room is set, we journey with the family to the communal kitchens to prepare the meal. Where General Steelstrike is usually reserved and on-edge, she is rather at ease in the kitchen with her grandchildren, and we join in the chaos of preparing the 'meal' with them. Despite her skill in battle, the General is a rather awful cook, as her daughter attests, but she enjoys it nevertheless.
Once we return to the home with our finished dish, we finally sit down together at the table with Auralia, the General, and her grandchildren Fynn and Tara to enjoy the meal together. While we can wrap up quickly if we choose, each person at the table has a handful of dialogue options if you choose to talk with them.
With the General, who we are now on a first-name basis with as Vaelisia, she reflects on her day-to-day life down in Hallowfall, and what she might do once the danger has passed.
With Auralia, meanwhile, she discusses the struggles of raising children in such a hostile environment, but how she values independence from her mother both for her own sake as well as for Vaelisia's.
With Auralia's son Fynn, we discuss his aspirations to become a Lamplighter, and his rather simplistic view of morality on 'things that glow'.
Finally, we talk with Auralia's daughter Tara, who after her initial shy nature when we entered has now opened up to us about her true aspirations of becoming an Earthen. While we have the opportunity to encourage or discourage her, she seems adamant in her desires either way.
With our meal finished, we leave the Steelstrike residence a full-bellied and fulfilled adventurer, with new friends and a rare moment to relax in our chaotic life on Azeroth.
Our New Friend Vaelisia
While most of our friends across the years come through the simple thanks of saving entire cultures again and again, Vaelisia is a novel relationship for the player character where we truly bond with the leader of a newly discovered nation. A neat detail on top of the quest content is that once you complete this storyline, the names of Steelstrike's NPCs across the game change from her title to using her first name, to indicate your familiarity.
Beyond the wholesome nature of this questline, however, one has to wonder the purpose of allowing the player bond with a character who, by all normal accounts, is a rather minor leader in the long run. To engage in a bit of speculation, perhaps this bond is being formed to make a moment in the story's future where we must fight
against
the Arathi all the more emotionally devastating?
During our setting of the Steelstrike residence, Vaelisia casually comments on a rebellion she put down back in the Arathi mainland, which earned her the command of the Hallowfall Expedition. While this could simply be a regular, just action of saving her people from those wishing to do them harm, the Arathi mainlanders seem to be rather zealous, if Faerin's words during her quests are any indication. With such a high-ranking position, it is more likely than not that Vaelisia is willing to accept that zealotry even if she herself does not agree with it.
This wouldn't be the first reputation faction that we were forced to turn on in World of Warcraft, either. During Mists of Pandaria, we ally with the Klaxxi Paragons in deposing their sha-corrupted queen, but at the end of their storyline in the Dread Wastes, they reveal that they worship the Old Gods. We become close friends with Kil'ruk the Wind Reaver throughout our time with the mantid, and as a gesture of good faith, he warns us that if the time of the Black Empire returns once more, they would side with their masters against us and our allies.
Ultimately, that very thing came to pass when Garrosh Hellscream woke the last remnants of the Old God Y'shaarj from their slumber using his heart, and the Klaxxi opted to join him in its defense. While he seemed to take no pleasure in it, Kil'ruk joins his fellow Paragons in fighting us to the death during the Siege of Orgrimmar, an act that see the mantid still lost to disrepair to this day.
While the current looming threat is that of the Void and Xal'atath, Hallowfall rather distinctly seems to be setting up a threat of the Light as one to be dealt with in the far-off future. The Arathi of Hallowfall may be our allies now, but they seem to have few options other than to band together with those around them when faced with so many existential threats.
What will happen when access to the Arathi homeland is once more established? What will Steelstrike and her soldiers do if their holy Emperor deems our strange array of races unfit to stand alongside their Empire? She certainly seems a faithful and loyal woman, being in charge of the expedition to pursue the Emperor's visions even to her own death. Will she turn against her Emperor and his ideals, or will we be forced to fight another friend and ally when the lines in the sand are drawn between us?
In the end, that is all speculation, but for now, we have a steadfast companion in the General of the Hallowfall Arathi. Whether it ends in unity or heartbreak for Vaelisia and her soldiers, only time will tell.
