Question, do you have to ACTUALLY target the body you want to loot? chances are, If I dont feel like going to a mob, click on it for auto loot, I dont even want to target the deadmob and click a item and auto loot it.

I can see it now, I'm storming through a low level dungeon for whatever, killing everything then whipping out the loot-a-rang and using it, it flies off towards each corpse and instantly deposits the loot in my bags for each kill.
I hope to god this is how it works.

I guess I don't understand why most of the above comments are so favorable for this item. I think the idea is cool, but the 10 sec cool down is disappointing.
What makes everyone commenting so excited about this one? Not being a jerk.. just wondering why I'm not getting it. Perhaps I'll never be pleased!

I think this will satisfy my OCD fairly well for those mobs you can't loot, you know the type: Humanoids when you're questing that run away and die on an extremely steep cliff face which you spend 5 mins trying to get in range to loot, and end up sliding down the slope trying to quickly mash the mouse button to loot as it flies past and the loot cursor goes bronzish and then back to grey.
Then trudge off in defeat, paranoid there's an epic or item of equivalent value on the one mob you can't reach. *angry face*

You do not need to have the mob selected before you use the Loot-A-Rang, you do however have to actually use the item and then click the corpse you want things from, it won't be automatically used if youre not in range of the target. That combined with the 10 second cooldown more or less relegates this to novelty status. I'll probably keep mine in my bank and call Jeeves is there's ever a real need for this thing.

Also useful for when something dies in the middle of a ledge that you cannot reach, because you are either too high up, or too far below, and it's impossible to remain stationary from falling off that ledge to get it on the drop.

Finally I created one, some facts about it:
It requires a valid target having loot, it will not acquire target automatically
Its not instant, short cast time, can't do it while on the move
It will make a druid exit cat or bear form
I have to say I'm pretty disappointed about it

Sadly, when you kill an enemy, you lose your target... so you have to re-target them to Loot-A-Rang them.
Here's a handy, simple macro to fix that!

To safe the actionbar button and have it easier to loot a mob, i just put the following in one of my normal macros:
/use Loot-A-Rang
Uses it when the mouse is over a dead enemy, but attention it will be also used when there is no loot in the mob.

This is an amazingly useful item that unfortunately, most won't realize without using a macro. Without a macro you will either force yourself to use it just for the sake of using it or more often than not just run to the corpse to loot everything like normal.
Here is an easy macro that will allow you to just hover over the corpse and use a keybind to loot it from a distance.

If you're like me however, you probably have too many buttons and would rather consolidate. I have it macro'd in with my racial (Rocket Jump) which is bound to middle click. So if I'm hovering over a corpse and middle-click it loots the corpse; otherwise I Roooockeetttt Juuuuumppp away....!

For those wondering, this item is a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT, I made one with big hopes and because noone clarified how it worked, for starters, you NEED to target the dead mob, then, theres a colddown, come on, if you cant kill mobs faster than 10s you need more gear.

It would be "cool" and "useful" if
it was able to loot *all*
the nearby corpses (say 10 yards range). Farming old content would be amazingly fun, for example. AOE-kill would have a new age too.
But what's the point to auto-loot

(or -even worst- macro requirement)? The only possible useful scenario is when your mob dies on a cliff and you're unable to loot it (happened few times in 5 years anyway).

Range appears to be about 30 yds.
You must target the corpse to loot by either having it targetted before using or using it, then clicking the corpse with highlighted pointer.

I can't believe how expensive the materials are for something that is this weak (FAR too many limitations on how it can be used).
In beta it used to loot all corpses nearby. THAT justified the cost. Way to nerf the item but not the materials Blizzard. You always robbed Peter but you never paid Paul.

Im afraid that your dreams will not happen.
Just made it, and it requires to target the corpse and then click the Loot-a-Rang. Going to take twice the time to loot many corpses. Only keeping it to get those down a steep hill corpses. Maybe also because I kinda want to have it, just in case Blizzard desides that its going to loot all corpses, at some point in the future.

When you use the Loot-a-Rang, your cursor will gain a grey outline (in the same way as if you were to case a without auto-self cast on), turning light blue when you mouse over a corpse, then you can just click.
The item has a very short (.25 second or less) cast time, so you cannot use it on the move.
One problem I currently see, is if you try to loot a mob you didn't tag or has no loot, you'll throw it and use up the cooldown without actually looting anything.

Another useage for this kind of macro would be for anyone who likes the novelty of playing wow with a gamepad like an xbox controller. although MASSIVELY impractical and requiring about a billion macros/mods, running about killing %^&* without paying any attention and watching a movie or something would make leveling alts hella awesome
its the same mentality as making those old cover-all counter-slash all slash all-hp absorb style FF7 materia combos then leaving an elastic band on the controller for a few hours for automated power leveling ;D

This item is very useful for ranged classes, since our mobs usually die some distance from us. Walking over to loot the mob is slow, cos we're, you know, walking. Mounting up to go over to the mount makes even less sense, since there's a cast time involved. Loot-a-rang fills this gap well.
Some minor problems:
Firstly, the 10-second cool-down is rather irritating, since we're often killing multiple mobs at range. Unless you have the luxury of looteranging each mob after it dies (while others are keeping you in combat), you will be forced to run over to the mobs anyway to loot them when they are all dead (or wait about 10s between each loot). This kind of defeats the purpose of having the loot-a-rang in the first place.
Secondly, the Loot-a-rang has a short cast time, which simply means you can't lootarang on the move.

So I play a feral druid, you can loot while in shapeshift form, but doing so will shift you back into normal casterform!
If you wanna fly around lootin' stuff youll just get de-birdied, leaving the loot-a-rang utterly useless.
A small cast time- as said many times before, only loots one mob, the range is about 30 yards, and it cost me about 1k to make (yeah, ah prices are insane sometimes)
However, it only requires 125 engineering to actually use, so making it for a toon youre lvling up might be a good idea :)
Oh well, it's great for... uhm.. taking up another bag-slot or looting something close to more mobs you don't wanna pull,
but as a collector I must have it! Gotta catch' em all!

Unfortunately in it's current state, the Loot-a-Rang is effectively a glorified "interact with target" macro that costs five hardened elementium bars and five electrified ethers to craft.
Hopefully Blizzard will review the Loot-a-Rang and perhaps allow it to simply loot the nearest tagged corpse
without
having to target anything first (
the already present 10 second cooldown would stop one person from hoovering everything up if the looting was set to FFA
) Then this would be a bit more attractive for players who whilst performing a speed run just don't want to burn time looting their assigned corpses.

I came looking for what level it stops giving 5 skillups to make and can't find that yet.
Thottbot seems to say it goes yellow at 495, green 497, gray 500, clearly wrong because at 505 I still get 5 skillups.
Funny, I found the Wowhead page and it copied the same comments as Thottbot.

I have been using this for a while (and liking it).
1. As a hunter I can loot from a distance without having to run up and get the item.
2. In Tol Barad where you have to kill the ghosts who are fighting, as a hunter when I kill the ghost I can loot it without getting aggro from the other ghost.
3. In Stonecore at the end the boss died in mid-air. Loot-a-rang saved the day. :)
Other then that I am wondering if the drops are better when you loot? Or is this me being superstitious (like with fishing)?

This is FAR too expensive to make for what it does! I mean, 5 hardened elementium and 5 electrified ether? That's 10 Volatile air (around 28G each on my server) and 50 elementium bars (~10G each on my server)! That's 780G... I'll take the gold (which is what you're looting for in the first place).
If it looted all corpses in a specified radius and didn't have a cooldown and was instant cast, I would. Otherwise, this is one item I'll pass on. I used my hardened elementium to make a Volatile Thunderstick instead, which also got me 5 skill points.

True story...
The first Cata raid week of vodka, when we killed Valiona and Theralion, one of the dragons died mid-air. We only got half of the loot, and couldn't reach the dragon in the air to loot it. I just happened to make a Loot-a-Rang while powerleveling my Engineering, and I was able to loot the body with it.
About 15 minutes later, while clearing the trash to Ascendant Council, one of the elemental adds died under the ground, and we could see sparkles coming up from the floor. I used a /target macro, but it was targeting the other mob of the same type. So I waited for it to die and despawn (bodies despawn more quickly if they have been looted), and what do you know, I was able to target the mob under the ground and loot it, and it dropped a BoE epic!
Even if I never use my Loot-a-Rang again, it paid for itself and gave us 4 epics in one night.

Okay. Since I havn't seen another post saying this, I will add in my two cents about the loot-a-rang after using it on multiple toons. Let's talk about each topic in order.
Firstly, the material cost. The materials - volatile earth and hardened elementium bars - will be rather expensive on the majority of servers (and specifically, a loot-a-rang is about three thousand gold on my server) Whereas the engineering requirement is only at level 125. This basically means that if you are one of the wealthy individuals whom either obtained your money legitimately by farming, playing the AH, or stealing / skimming out of your guild bank, you will be able to afford this for your alts who pack engineering to make them level faster or twink them. This is a convenience, but only for those whom can afford it. That said, the loot-a-rang in itself is a convenience, but it's very expensive and doesn't quite provide enough utility to justify the cost in many situations - as its value is questionable enough without alts being factored in.
Another factor binding it is that it is bind on equip, you need a new one for each character, no mailing it to an alt like you could with a zapthrottle mote extractor.
Second, utility value:
The loot-a-rang has a 0.5 second cast time and as such may not be used while moving.
The loot a rang has a 10 second cooldown, and will only loot one corpse at a time, as opposed to all in a general area.
The loot a rang must be manually triggered / clicked unless you bind it to a hotkey. I would not recommend using the loot a rang without binding it to a hotkey, as you will likely be able to move to the corpse and right click it in the time it would take you to manually click on the body, then use the loot-a-rang.
These are some nasty factors that make the loot-a-rang nigh-useless for a melee character of some form. Basically, if there is a high chance that the mob will die near you, then there is a low chance the loot-a-rang will come in handy.
For a ranged class, the same question applies. do you expect to consistently kill mobs before the mob gets within melee range of you? Be honest - you are investing money in your answer.
If you like to aggro a lot of mobs and often times they die in a pile at your feet, or are just simply undergeared, this will provide much less of a benefit. the only potential situation where a loot-a-rang would come in handy is for looting a mob that becomes inaccessable for some reason, and situations like those - though they happen - are rather rare.
The loot a rang will not loot chests, herbs, minneral nodes, quest objectives, static objects of any form, etcetera. you may loot the corpses of slain mobs, and nothing else.
The best odds at a loot-a-rang being useful come for the ranged fighter whom will consistently kill multiple targets outside of a twenty yard range or so, or need to loot corpses outside of that range.
Most people leveling or grinding as a ranged class will, in my personal experience, like to aggro multiple mobs at the same time to speed up questing. This can void the use, as most if not all of those mobs will die within melee range for most people.
That said, the loot-a-rang has its significant uses.
Example 1: You like questing in vashj'ir, a three-dimensional questing zone - currently the only one in the game, or, questing in areas which have a significant density of ranged mobs, and you are also a ranged class. The loot a rang will be a time saver under the condition you bind its use to a hotkey.
Example 2: You have a special girl whom you are leveling an alt with together / otherwise quest consistently in a group, and as we all know, group loot questing can easily result in "Come over here and loot this mob". The loot-a-rang voids this inconvenience.
However, for example 2, that applies the most when you are leveling an alt with someone or consistently group questing... ergo, it's an alt. This makes me have to leave a reminder as to it's cost - you must have engineering at least level 125 on the character to use the loot-a-rang, and you must invest a significant ammount of money into building it, or having it built by someone else. Prices and value will varry, but the concept needs to be taken into account.
Engineering level 125 is not obtainable untill at least level 10, but keep in mind that the requirement to -craft- the loot a rang is significantly higher than the requirement to equip and use it.
I've shown you it's pro's, its cons, and how it can or can't come in handy. Please rate this up if you found the information useful / helpful / etcetera.
This will be edited if new information comes into play, such as the item being changed in a patch.
EDIT for some new info: A couple people who replied to this comment were nice enough to present a hidden benefit to the loot-a-rang, specifically, when WoW's old crappy servers lag out and you are rendered unable to loot bodies and are stuck bent over in a looting position or when you kill a mob and it's body appears in a different area than the corpse actually is, rendering it unlootable - the loot-a-rang fixes both problems without requiring a relog. This boosts it's utility value.

As a hunter, I really love this item, use it a lot, and have no regrets.
Also, when I have been doing lower-level quests for the achievements, the mobs died but "jumped" at me anyway. I couldn't loot them by clicking on them because they were "too far away." Out of curiosity, I used the Loot-A-Rang on a dead mob even though it was right at my alt's feet, and it worked just fine. Weird, but there you go.

One unique useful feature of this that isn't immediately apparent: Have any of you ever had that occasional bug where you'll go to loot a mob, but it won't loot, and you'll be stuck in the looting position forever and unable to actually pick anything up without relogging?
This fixes that.

At first I was skeptical when I first made mine, and thought I would only use it when a mob died half the way up a cliff face or something. But I use it all the time on my mage, no more wasting a blink cooldown for me. And if you're making a second engineer, then chances are you have mining, and are more than capable of farming up the mats in a reasonably amount of time.

I found this to be tremendously helpful when doing the Netherwing daily "The Not-So-Friendly Skies...". Normally I have to wait for the mobs to be above a rock before killing them, but now I can one-shot them with Unleash Elements and use this to loot them before they fall out of range.
TL;DR: You cannot be moving to use this, but the corpse can be doing whatever the hell it wants, as long as it's still in range when you finish the cast.

Just to summarise the key points:
Requires you to have a corpse targeted. If you don't, it will bring up the glove.

If this cost 5 plain elementium bars to make I might consider it, but wasting 5 hardened elementium bars on an item that has very little use is nothing to get excited about, imo. I wouldn't waste a bag slot carrying this thing around, so I didn't even bother paying to train for it. Let the downrating begin.

Since nobody else seems to have mentioned this yet I would like to verify that as of this posting (build 15544) the LAR does in fact do AoE looting in the MoP beta, as verified by killing half of stockades in a pile, targeting a corpse on the edge of said pile, and running down the hall to max LAR range and verifying all corpses were looted (to ensure that the AoE loot radius was based on the looted corpse and not the player).
Additionally the macros posted before need some serious work to make them a joy to use instead of just something you might sometimes do if a corpse was REALLY far away.

Personally I use Earth Shock on my shaman and Eviscerate on my rogue since they're both the same button, and the button I rest my middle finger on. This macro gives you the best of 4 worlds:
LAR doesn't require a dedicated button or keybind
LAR is always easy to hit when you want it
LAR can be used to easily loot ranged corpses via mouseover
You can loot your last target at any distance without having to actually mouseover and right click by just hitting the button to loot the last thing you killed, which will be further enhanced with the AoE loot in MoP. This is particularly helpful if you use mouesmove like you're supposed to and pretty much always have that right mouse button held down.
This is seriously the best engineering toy ever, I love it so much. If I have one thing to loot, regardless of how far away it is, I use LAR, if there's a bunch of stuff I use LAR on a remote corpse and then pretty much on CD after. This item is the reason I dropped LW on my rogue alt and leveled engineering, I just couldn't stand to not have it. While the default incarnation of it of sticking it on its own button is pretty useless, a macro such as above can make it integral to your daily wow life to the point that you only really think about it when you DON'T have it.

In the MoP Beta, AoE-looting was added, and it includes looting with this item.
That means that if a bunch of corpses you can loot are all bunched up and away from you, you can now loot them all at the same time with one single use of this item.

This is one of the coolest and least used items i've ever seen SO to fix that i've been working on a macro to attach it to a commonly used ability, being a rogue I have it linked with my recuperate ability so during combat my recup. functions the same but after battle i MOUSEOVER a dead target, hit the same button for recup. and it casts my Looterang

/use Loot-A-Rang
/cast recuperate
/cast spell
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()
/console Sound_EnableSFX 1
this will also prevent you character from saying the annoying "i can't use that yet, that's not ready, I CAN'T DO THAT YET!" speech
this macro tastes great and is less filling

For cataclysm classic 2024,
this straight up doesn't work
. Like it doesn't even single target loot.
It's completely useless as of 05/24/24
