Rage Winterchill can be found as the first boss in the Caverns of Time instance, Battle of Mount Hyjal (Hyjal Summit). He has roughly 2 million HP, an AoE Frostbolt, as well as a Death and Decay spell.
Rage Winterchill is a Lich, and looks kinda like Kel'Thuzad.
First kill by Nihilum, then Forte and Curse.
While on the PTR we was fghting him, he quoted:
Yell: Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
Yell: Succumb to the icy chill... of death!
Yell: The Legion's final conquest has begun! Once again the subjugation of this world is within our grasp. Let none survive!
Yell: All life must perish!

In this fight, you will be helped by Lady Jaina Proudmoore and some Alliance soldiers. Jaina Proudmore does around 250k damage during the fight, and the soldiers 250 k also, so they're a good help.

I hate to sound ignorant, but is this guy for real? On paper, he comes off as a joke; the only real challenge appears to be reacting to the Frostbolt, which for any healer worth their salt isn't worth breaking a sweat over. Is there something about this guy that isn't readily apparent that makes him harder than what his abilities denote?
It occurs to me that perhaps he is intended to be "easy", as you will likely go straight to him after killing Kael'thas (since most down Vashj first), and if you can kill Kael, you deserve a reprieve. Also, I get the impression that Blizzard REALLY wants people to experience Black Temple, and so making the last part of the quest a fairly easy one seems shrewd enough. Anyone able to provide some clarity on this?

He is rather easy, we killed him on our second ever attempt....however the frostbolt does hit INCREDIBLY hard, and most raid groups will lose a few people to it.
Also consider that Hyjal works much like Black Morass, and if you wipe to the boss you have to face the first 8 waves of mobs all over again.

It is probably bug and it might be fixed soon but you can actually blink out of ice thomb you are in after Icebolt. Works only for mages, tho it is major help since it is tank & spank fight. AFAIK Insygnia doesn't work on it, no info about Escape Artist racial... we will try this next week :P

Is it just me, or are frost protection potions useful on this guy?
I mean, you can't drink health pots in response to the frostbolt, because it stuns you... but the frost pot eats the damage up front.
He apparently isn't *that* hard, but having an alchemist whip up a cauldron of frost protection for the raid would probably make it EZmode.

Medallion of the Alliance/Horde (that is the new version) does work on the Ice Tomb.
If you are at full health in most cases your healers can keep you up, but if you are not on full health (or are in general low on health) this may save you. Since dps on the boss is not an issue I always prefer to equip my medallion.

Yes, Insignia and a Major Frost Res potion will make this trivial. However, Death and Decay has a very poorly done spell effect and barely visible, if your Spell Detail setting isn't maxed out.
This fight's real difficulty - if you can call it difficulty - is learning and handling the waves of mobs before the boss: usually it is done by a properly executed 'AOE everything' method. A paladin tank is really nice here, for obvious reasons. Let her build aggro, by single target killing the first 2 mobs from each pack (usually a Necromancer, Crypt Fiend or Abomination) and then go all out with AOE on the rest of the pack without the fear of pulling aggro.
Besides that, be wary pulling it too early to Jaina, as she will not be smart enough to run out from Death and Decay: if she dies, the encounter will fail.

I've posted a strat on all the bosses of SSC and TK on thottbot, and felt like coming over here to help out more people. I recently started writing strats on Hyjal/BT bosses, so this is the first of several that will be posted. I do this for fun, and I write all my strats from memory with a little aid from bosskillers only for the exact numbers. I totally recommend going to bosskillers to check out their strat, since it's as good as any, but mine are just more personalized and might contain tidbits that I wish could help even more.
Here goes the strat. Since the trash is an integral part of the fight (you have to go from wave 1 to him in one go), I'll list the mobs and waves here.
*All the mobs are susceptible to the normal kinds of cc (fear, shackle, sheep) that apply to their type (all of these are undeads except for shadowy necromancers which are humanoids).
Ghouls: These hit fairly hard, hitting cloth for up to 3k. They also enrage, so should be kept off your AoErs at all times. At low health they cannibalize if a body is near, but it shouldn't be much of a problem taking them down amidst the AoE. They are the fodder, if you will.
Crypt Fiends: These are even easier to handle, since they shoot 3 scarabs at ranged that hits for ~800 each if the ranged aggro, giving the tanks plenty of time to take aggro back. They do hit for 3k on cloth in melee range, and they web spit the tanks. Keep an eye out for the rooting effect and you shouldn't have any problem taking them down.
Abominations: A troublesome trash mob. They hit pretty hard, obviously, and they have an melee aura of ~800 a tick. The real danger, though, comes from their stun. If your tank gets stunned while 5+ different mobs are hitting on him/her, that tank will need lots of heals (can't parry, block, dodge, etc).
Shadowy Necromancer: One of the toughest foes to handle. They're completely ranged, and their shadowbolts hit for 3k. More than a couple of these on a ranged and you'll have someone dead pretty fast. They could be feared or sheeped, use these cc to your advantage. They also will summon 2 constructs (melee or caster) if a friendly npc dies, and they'll count towards the number of mobs you need to take down, beware.
Tank strat: Have your main tank up ahead of everyone at all times, since the mobs come and aggro upon proximity. If a specific wave hits hard, the tank could be behind the npcs a bit for the npcs to take the brunt of the assault. Have around 4-5 tanks if you do not have a prot paladin, and just have them try to aggro / hold all of them.
Kite strat: The Alliance camp that you start in has a lot of friendly npcs. However, they do not aggro unless a mob is in their vicinity. Having the friendly npcs helping you dps the waves (and the boss) is pretty time conserving. Have one hunter randomly pick a trash mob (mark it for the tanks to see so they don't taunt it) and kite it (frost trap, concussion shot) to Jaina Proudmoore, aggro'ing all the npc mages/riflemen as you go. Another hunter should kite another mob to the left of Jaina, aggro'ing the riflemen back there.
Raid strat: The tanks sometimes will take spike damage from stuns / shadowbolts, so have your healers be aware of what mobs are coming. The AoE should hold off until they're sure the tanks have aggro. The best way to get this done would be to mark a mob with a kill mark and everyone burn it down first (mark a second one if needed), then initiate AoE. All the raid should be at the bottom of the ramp in front of Jaina just before the entrance to the camp. Drink whenever you can in between waves, and if someone dies, he/she can run back in if ressing isn't possible. Note that running back won't be possible if you aggro Rage. As for the melee dps and non-AoErs, have a tank keep marking a kill target for them to focus on.
If you have a prot paladin (well geared), you've just made this 100x easier for yourself. Have him aggro all the mobs (consecrate, all that jazz), and wait a few seconds before AoE. With the right buffs (Salv, Tranq Air Totem), the AoE shouldn't have to stop, and the waves will go down really really fast.
Waves:
1) 10 ghouls
2) 10 ghouls 2 crypt fiends
3) 6 ghouls 6 crypt fiends
4) 6 ghouls 4 crypt fiends 2 necromancers
5) 2 ghouls 6 crypt fiends 4 necromancers
6) 6 ghouls 6 abominations(!)
7) 4 ghouls 4 necromancers 4 abominations(!)
8) 6 ghouls 4 crypt fiends 2 abominations 2 necromancers
9) Rage Winterchill
Exclamation marks mark the waves that you might have to watch out for.
The Boss:
Rage winterchill, aside from his melee, has 3 abilities that can't be avoided. He should be tanked at Jaina.
Frost Nova: Exactly as it sounds, he randomly frost novas everyone in place for 6 seconds occassionally. It does a little bit of damage, but you should just ignore it.
Death and Decay: He randomly puts this under a player. However, it's an AoE, and the range is HUGE. Anyone caught in it should move out ASAP, and move a lot they should, to make sure they're completely out of it. It deals 15% of ppls max hp per second, so it's pretty nasty. Heal through this. He doesn't coincide this with the frost nova (thank goodness). The graphic for this are red bubbles coming from the ground, just like any other death and decay. Have your spell graphics option turned up in the video menu.
Icebolt: The primary thing you have to watch out for. He very often randomly targets a player and does a 1 second cast. When the ice bolt hits, the target will be dealt 5-6k dmg and then 2.5k each second afterwards for 4 seconds. That's a total of ~15k dmg dealt. He/she will be frozen so cannot pot/healthstone. It is up to the healers to keep the targeted person alive with shield / very fast heals. This is what will wipe your raids if your healers can't handle the fast healing. Use a target of target macro to instantly heal the target the moment Rage switches. It is possible to PvP trinket out of the ice block effect (and the remaining 4 ticks of 2.5k). After each death and decay, he usually does a frost nova first, then he'll initiate icebolts. He sometimes chain icebolts pretty fast, so beware.
Strat: Basically, get the npcs involved, keep your tank up, run out of death and decays, and bomb those heals on the icebolted player. IF healing the ice bolt becomes too big of a problem, have most of your raid equipt their PvP trinket for good measure. Even if a few people die, you can still make it, for rage doesn't hit hard otherwise and it is not really a dps race. However, if you've got the bolt healing down, he's cakewalk.
Edit: His AoE doesn't do % damage now, but a set damage of ~1.2k. Also, as of patch 2.4, his Icebolts no longer stun. It probably is not a bug, and is more in line of a nerf. Even though you can't trinket out of it anymore (a buff in this sense), Icebolted players can healthstone/pot/heal themselves (a nerf in this sense).

Actually actually, 'ashes to ashes' is from the funeral service of the Anglican book of common prayer.

If your guild doesn't take this boss on your first night of attempts, you should seriously consider disbanding the guild. Even with guilds who can only take say.. Hydross, Lurker and Void Reaver you shouldn't have much trouble.

I just hopped on here to add that, as a mage, if you have the extended range fireball and get max range on this guy, you will never get icebolted and hence you will never die.

To the ones that havn't been in Hyjal ; This boss seems pretty easy himself, but the thing mostly lays in the waves. They are alike The Blood Furnance, though pretty harder. The waves are in order :
1. 10 ghouls
2. 10 ghouls 2 crypt fiends
3. 6 ghouls 6 crypt fiends
4. 6 ghouls 4 crypt fiends 2 necromancers
5. 2 ghouls 6 crypt fiends 4 necromancers
6. 6 ghouls 6 abominations
7. 4 ghouls 4 necromancers 4 abominations
8. 6 ghouls 4 crypt fiends 2 abominations 2 necromancers
9. Rage Winterchill (Boss)
The ghouls have no special abilities as far as i know.
Crypt fiends spawns small insects, 3-4 (?) hitting for ~350 on leather. The Fiends are a bit higher in health too.
Necromancers casts Shadowbolts contantly when attacking from range, and varies with melee / sbolts when targeting melee.
Abominations are slow kills, and have a Passive Aoe, that deals ~700 with around 10sec between, on any MELEE attackers nearby.
Depending on how fast you take the previous wave down, the next wave comes pretty timed. Though, if you are too slow you will have the next wave arriving before the first are cleared, wich means NO DRINKING / ressing , and often no positination, wich surely will results in a few deaths.
The overall tacs that are used in ALL waves (exept first) are : cc the Crypt fiends / abominatinons, and AoE the mobs when they are around 50-30% (depending on how much time you have)
Now, more specific how we do it :
1.Wave: Tank n spank, aoe at 50% though no need to hurry.
2/3Wave:As above, just cc the Crypt fiends and not the ghouls.
4.Wave: CC on the Fiends to start with. The necromancers are the only ranged, and hard to pull to The upcomming AoE, so use a tank ( we use warrior ) and the Melee dps you have ( rogues does this great since kick etc ) takes down the Necromancers. Then, realase the CC if the haven't expired, and Start the AoE as fast as possible. ( remember to ress / drink between fights, cuz now the real thing starts )
5.wave: Nearly the same, just improved mobs. Melee takes necros, cc fiends, and AoE when you are ready.
6.Wave: CC on Abominations, and here it is good to tank the mobs in groups ( abomintions - Fiends ) reason ; the abomination aura. So melee goes on ghouls, and ranged on abos. Start the AoE as fast as possible, around 50%, cuz a incomming wave now will result in a wipe, that's nearly 100% sure.
( wave 6 and 7 is the hardest part )
7wave: CC abos, Melee on casters ( good time to use Cooldowns for tex. rogues ) And rest on Ghouls. AoE fast, since the next grp will require a good position.
8wave: same here, BUT - Only cc the two abos, if possible. reason : you probebly will have a few deaths here, and you will need anytime you can get to ress ppl / drink before boss, so AoE as many mobs as possible. AoE pretty fast, and waste usefull cd's to fasten the process.
Now, the previous wave shut have been down BEFORE you spot Winterchill at the hill, ( or what it now is ) To give time to ress / drink, you have a rogue stealthing ( spare vanish to this moment, if your grp haven't killed the wave before Winterchill comes ) And have im use Distract at Winterchill, wich will give you another 10 sec ( one more ress! ) and time to drink.
Note : dont bring ppl with crappy computers / lag to this boss, since his Death & Decay can create some lag for them. ( wich results in a death , probebly )
Boss Fight : He casts, Frost nova, death & decay, and icebolt.
First spell dmg for 2.5k and freezes for 6sec. Death and daecay are 3 sec cast time , so you will be warned before it comes. deals ~1.5k per sec, and have a HUGE range, so watch out ! Icebolt is the major danger, since it can hit anyone in the raid. Deals 4-5k initial, then 2.5k every sec for 4 secs. use macro to heal the targeted player. In the fight you have Jaina Proudmoree and Alliance soldiers, wich gives you 100% spirit aura, and 145 AP aura. They helps with tanking, and deals 500k toghether. This guys might pull the mobs OoS, making you in-combat, and unable to drink, when you think that you have cleared the whole wave. We had some deaths at the decay last time, and took him down to 38% from 90%, with 3dps, tank 2 healers, until tank got a icebolt on him. GL ! :)

That Death and Decay ability listed there is definitely wrong. His does 15% of max HP per second and lasts 15 seconds.

My friend and I both play paladins, and one of our favorite things to do in this game is to see how far/successful we are able to 2-man contents. The benefits are many; aside from personal feelings of accomplishments, raid bosses drop tons of gold (Hyjal bosses drop 250g, BWL bosses about 200g each) and lots of rep.
Since I think there may be folks who are interested to know, I'll explain how we are able to 2-man this boss. We are both ICC geared though, and I wouldn't suggest anything less-geared.
Both of us are specced tank/dps. One needs to be a tank during the trash spawns; you can't survive otherwise. They're pretty much simple - be sure to throw heals to the tank occasionally. Watch out for abominations as they knock you down. Use
Divine Protection
when you get abomination groups. Necromancers can be tanked by the ret partner - with
shadow aura
they don't hit very hard; separating them from the melee mobs helps reduce incoming damage to the tank.
Now comes Rage Winterchill. After the 8th wave, he will /yell to the zone, and at this point the tank will need to quickly switch back to dps mode before engaging him, due to the 10-minute enrage timer. Besides you will need alot of
instant heals
.
We also experimented with various type of gear, and found that we had the most success with the
Icebane
frost resist
set pieces
. And of course the
shadow
and
frost resist
auras.
The designated tank will need to have
Seal of Light
up, as this fight is a balance between surviving the magic damage and beating the enrage timer.
In addition, both paladins will need to spec into
Divine Purpose
. Like all other stun removal abilities that other classes have, Hand of Freedom will break you out of the ice tombs, with a 25-second cooldown. This is perhaps the most important part, as without a stun removal, it's near impossible to 2-man this fight without a healer.
Start the fight as usual, designate one as the tank with
Seal of Light
. Freedom out of icetombs, and be sure to always keep
Sacred Shield
up at all times. Insta-heal yourself every chance you get; without tank gear, he melees you for 4-5k and crits for double that.
Cleanse Frost Novas; don't waste your Freedom on it.
When he casts
Death and Decay
, run out of range - and you get a respite for a few seconds. Heal yourself to full in that duration as you wait out the channeling. Rinse and repeat.
If you do it right, you should be very near the enrage timer - our best time was 8 minutes and 43 seconds. This is why you want to be as geared as possible - since you will also be trading out three pieces for frost resist pieces.
He drops 250g, that's 125g per person. Happy 2-manning! :)

I just soloed this fella on my iLevel 348 hunter, survival spec. Stood at max range with a turtle and spammed glyphed misdirection. Took about 5 minutes, never got hit by D&D or tombs.

Tried soloing a few times on my blood DK but I didn't get far. I was able to avoid his DnD 3 times but it does so much damage that I couldn't heal myself up enough in between them. Also he iceblocks you right before he drops DnD so you can't get out fast enough. I'd say this fight cannot be soloed except apparently by a pet class. Going to try with my warlock in the future. We'll see what happens.

Trying to solo him as with my paladin tank with 172k unbuffed hp, his death and decay was doing about 25-26k a tick as of 4.0.6, o.o. Its probably percentage wise dmg or its just glitched.

I have soloed Rage Winterchill as a Blood DK but when he died I couldn't loot him, anyone else got that problem?

Not doable solo, unless you can free yourself from stun to run out from the DaD. The DaD will tick for % of your max health thus stunned in the AoE circle is death after 6 seconds, it ticks for ~17% of your max health each second. I recommend doing this with a Balance rather than Feral, at least you can shapeshift out of the root each time to avoid dying from the DaD.

Just solo'd as a combat rogue, a few pointers:
Have bandages with you
Use feint whenever he uses death & decay and run out (sprint out if you can)
Never used evasion, I guess it can soak a bit of his damage but the only real danger here is death & decay.
He has a 10 minute enrage timer so dps is needed however focus on staying alive and you should be good to go.

Despite thinking this would be nigh-impossible due to the 4.1 Word of Glory CD,I just soloed this as a Retribution Paladin in mostly epics,using Seal of Light,Blessing of Kings, and Resistance Aura.
After "engaging" the boss (He apparently didn't kill Jaina after my last catastrophic attempt),he started killing me very quickly. Figuring it was a death ,for the hell of it I dragged him over to Jaina so she could help. I don't think she did much,but then I learned about her

The tl;dr version is,Fight the boss normally untill he casts DnD,run far away from him and cast Flash of Lights until he finishes channeling ,run back to him,fight him while Jaina's aura gives you all your mana back,run out when he casts DnD,heal as much as possible,etc. (And of course,use Bubble or Hand of Freedom if he snares you right before doing DnD)
Doing that,combined with Seal of Insight and well timed WoGs,kept me in a generally comfortable area of health (40-50%) for most of the fight,aside from Frost Armor/Frost Nova+DnD combos.
...Up until I was killed when he had about 50% health by not being able to see how far his DnD spread out. So keep an eye out for that. =\
One particle density increase later,I got back in there and pretty easily killed him using the above strat.

Biggest fail about soloing this encounter isn't the boss itself so much as its you have to fight waves of mobs all over again if you wipe. And one bad iceblock+DnD can make that happen quite a lot.

Difficult to solo with a ret pally now, possibly because there are more Icebolts than previously--it's hard to complete a cast. Your trinket and bubble will likely be on cooldown too much for comfort. Much easier to solo with a blood dk in pretty much any gear.

Solo'ed this today doing the old BT attunement line as a Blood DK. Here are some things to know:
1) His DnD does % based dmg, and is deadly regardless of item level. You *need* to avoid this as much as humanly possible. The graphic on it is horrendously bad, and you often wont even know you're standing in it except for taking damage. Run to ~20-30 yards, to keep out.
2) IBF is your friend. Pop it preemptively when you know a DnD is coming soon to stop the icebolts from freezing you. Use it every CD.
3) AMS works exactly the same. Use on CD.
4) Eat those ghouls every CD. I pop raise dead at the start, and eat him when he's nearly done his duration. Popped Army a few DnD phases later when pact was nearly done CD.
5) Drag him every time you can to get every npc, especially Jaina, involved.
6) Lastly, swap out a trinket for a pvp trinket. Keep this for emergencies, when you get iceblocked just as DnD is being cast. This will kill you otherwise.

Here are 2 videos for a guide I made on how to solo Battle for Mount Hyjal.
I use my hunter for the first 3 bosses (Rage Winterchill,Anetheron & Kaz'Rogal) then switch over to my Paladin for the last 2 (Azgalor & Archimonde).
Tacs can be used for any group or class.

soloed him as fury warri before in 350 gear and now for the life of me i cannot do it again in 375 gear. it seems the frequency of his icebolt has increased so dramatically that he now casts it every 3-4 seconds after you get released from the last one.
seeing how icebolt does roughly 14k dmg every 7-8 seconds he`s now top contender for the TBC legacy boss with most dps. I really do not know if the icebolt buff to him was intended but I do think that its impossible to solo him with a non-pet / non-healing class after the icebolt buff.
edit: after reattempting him i saw he does icebolt every exactly 8 seconds and melee hits every 2 seconds for 3750 dmg on plate user.
which sums up to a whooping 3.5k dps sustained and a stun with 50% uptime I think even dks will have major trouble with him now cuz they wont be able to power up their shield if they are stunned 50% of the fight.
Maybe blizz is trying to make raids more like BWL where u need to be 2 in order to get past the first boss. I seriously hope that is not the case here as farming Hyjal gave me 2k-ish gold for a hour worth of play.

Yep just went in with 365 tank gear Warrior 200k. Started the fight got a frost Nova on me and at the exact same time he cast DnD right on me even though I was running and well away. The first tick killed me outright, then straight here to find out what's going on. It's either bugged or the less people in the raid the harder it hits but atm it's definitely not 15% dmg - in my case it was 100%.
This seems to have happened possibly in the server restarts this week or last week as far as I can tell. Anyone else seeing a similar situation?

It took me around 1h and 7 min to complete and I had around 1573g without selling any BoE.

Soloed him with my DK Blood ilvl 384 (PvE).
Just run away when he uses Death and Decay. Use PvP Trinket and he uses DnD and Stuns u at the same time (considering that ur Icebound Fortitude is on Cooldown).
Anti-magic shell cuts the damage from DnD.
And after him, got all the Mount Hyjal by myself.
1 and half hour to do all the job for 1500 gold.

Just soloed him as a 390 item level fury warrior some days ago, had mostly 397 VP gear, 2 raid finder (390) gurthalak and some 384 raid finder items, no DS raid gear.
First of all, I'm normally arms, my gear is reforged for arms, so I normally can't do more than 20k dps as fury, so don't take the item level like if it was a faceroll.
Second thing, I used 3 blacksmithing items level 213 for over 300 frost resistance, this decreases the damage by icebolt by a lot, and I'm not sure, but can shorten its duration, making it less hard to avoid death and decay, so actually my item level wasn't 390 on the fight, more like 375.
Also used a pvp trinket which removes movement impairing effect level 390, but took the one which increases critical strike by 400, so at least it did something on dps, other than saving from death and decay + icebolt combo.
I moved out of death and decay as soon as possible, I also took the talent second wind 2\2, to regenerate 6% hp each time I was hit by icebolt.
Used 6 embersilk bandages healing for 35k each, 2 times enraged regeneration (only when I was at very low hp), once the pvp trinket, saved me from icebolt + dnd, the fight lasted almost 9 mins, had still 1 minute before enrage.
The tactic that helped me to down him was: often he casts death and decay regardless of deadly boss mods saying it or not, so I kited him when I felt that he was going to use it again, and while running from him you don’t get many icebolts.
Also, jaina and the other ones were helping with dps.
I also used a 25k healing potion which critically hit for 52k or so, so this really seemed the right attempt.
I highly recommend not trying this as warrior of any spec, unless you really really want to solo it, took me 2 weeks of attempt, but the very first attempt with second wind talent (although literally perfect) I made it.
9 screenshots from since when I thought I could make it, till when he died and I looted him.
One-shotted the rest, except azgalor, cause he killed thrall, done the next attempt, but wasn't really a challenge, as I had already soloed all 2 times, just asking help for winterchill.

Ok, nice tip for soloing Rage as a melee...
When the cooldown for his D&D is up, start strafing while doing "your thing"...
When he does cast D&D, he casts it on YOUR CURRENT spot, and with the cast time, it means he'll be far enough away from it that you can continue to dps him while he channels it, rather than standing away from him waiting for it to end. BOOM EASY RAIDSOLO!
Oh, yeah, disclaimer. Sometimes he will Ice Block or Frost Nova you while casting D&D. Such is life, nothing you can do about it, not going to wipe you, just means you get to watch him channel D&D instead of my trick...

Don't listen to Bandcamp, I tried to see if it worked, rage winterchill casts DnD exactly where you are and SINCE you are a melee, given the 30 yards area, there's no way you would be able to melee winterchill without standing in it; anyway, on the second week I did him with the same gear in two attempts (always fury warrior with 390 item level), this other week I couldn't do it in 10 attempts, the key factor seems to be:
1) If you run from him (seems even if you look at him and dps him while you do) he casts icebolt less often, this helps to keep you alive.
2) On the other hand, I tried kiting him A LOT, didn't have the enrage timer indicator on, he enraged at 170k and killed me when I had full hp, so you need to find the right balance between kiting and dpsing as warrior.

Completely different from DK perspective: soloed as a 318 (!) dps geared blood dk at first try, used AMS at every death and decay, if you use it before he casts it you don't actually take even a minimal damage, it absorbs the DnD damage completely.
And even at that gear my death strike + absorb was just enough for all the rest of the damage.
Took me 9 min 42, killed at 18 sec till enrage and actually dps'd him while standing on death and decay in the end, lol (surprising what you can do with a dk and you can't do with a much better geared warrior).
Here's 3 screenshots, first killing rage winterchill close to the enrage, second showing that I had the same hp with 318 item level at the end of the raid, the third to let you see how long it takes with that gear to solo all (around 2 hours).

Thought I'd give my two coppers for any rogues looking to have a go at this boss.

You could probably drop 2 points in something other than Precision to get Improved Sprint, or skip it altogether.
I don't think it's a necessary talent but it's helpful in this fight and gives you a wider margin for error if RNG isn't in your favor with Death & Decay / Frost Nova.
- use a PVP trinket / Every Man For Himself to break Icebolt
- Strafe around the boss to minimize damage from Death & Decay. It lands where you were at the start of his cast. You should take 1 tick at most if you do it right.
- Rotate between Vanish(*), Cloak of Shadows and Sprint to get out of Frost Nova. Sprint is best saved to break Frost Nova if Death & Decay is incoming.
* Note: Vanishing then resuming your attacks works because the boss should have the NPCs nearby on his aggro list so he won't reset. Even if you engage Winterchill far away from the friendly NPCs, it takes a few seconds for him to fully reset so you can still use Vanish to break roots then quickly attack him again.
- I skip Combat Readiness, using CLoS is more important and Evasion helps enough against his melee attacks. The real danger is Death & Decay in his fight.
- use bandages during Death & Decay. Refresh Recuperate ahead of time, not at the last second, so you have it running while Icebolt is on you.
You have 10 mins until he enrages. Don't rush the DPS, focus on staying out of Death & Decay and healing yourself when you can.
Think that's about it.

So it's Cataclysm now and I didn't know what would happen, but we easily defeated this boss with 1 warrior tank, 2 DK, 1 Spriest, 1 Hunter, 1 Ret pally and 1 Healer.
Rage Winterchill is the first boss in this Raid.
You will engage him after the waves, for which you will see a counter at the top of your UI. The waves are Ghouls, Abominations, Wailing Spirits and Necromancers (human male casters).
When you are done killing him, DO NOT LEAVE to the Horde Encampment. There are 2 bosses for each encampment and of course Archimonde is at the Tree of Nordrassil. It's a long ride if you prematurely head to the Horde base.
We tried to scout around in places off the map and hit invisible walls.
NOTE: This was a 25 man raid only so I believe at this time you need at least 10 guildies to get the Guild Hyjal Summit achievement.
I am writing a mini guide for each boss since I didn't think the information here was helpful to someone never having done this at 70. Good luck!

He's one of the bosses in the WCIII Reign of Chaos attack, with the battle of Archimonde. He isn't very tough in WCIII, so killing him should be easy. Frost Lich, vs. 20-25 players = Players: 1, Lich: 0

He's the first boss of Mount Hyjal, a 25 man instance in the Caverns of Time in Tanaris. In order to enter the instance, you need to be in a raid, and must have the "Vials of Eternity" quest finished. You can pick up this quest from a patrolling NPC inside the main room of the Caverns of Time, and the quest requires you to loot quest items off of Lady Vashj, the last boss of Serpent Shrine Cavern (25 man raid) of Coilfang Reservoir, and Kael'thas Sunstrider, the last boss of The Eye (25 man raid) of Tempest Keep. Rage Winterchill himself is an objective of an attunement quest (of Black Temple), at least he drops the item necessary. The quest starts off in Shadowmoon Valley and the first step involves looting tablets in the rise north of Warden's Cage, guarded of lots of unfriendly Lost Ones.
The quest also takes you to Arcatraz to talk to an NPC, and leads to fighting Fathomlord Karathress in SSC and then Alar in The Eye. Rage Winterchill is the final raid step. All you need to do after killing him is to hand the quest item in and watch an interesting interaction between friendly and nonfriendly NPCs (also involving the Warden and Akama, two very important characters in the Warcraft World). For the attunement you also receive the Medallion of Karabor, a very useful shadow resistance necklace (epic).
Before fighting Rage Winterchill (actually same with all the bosses of Mount Hyjal), you need to fight through 8 waves of trash. Each wave is composed of the same kinds of monsters, but the waves get progressively harder as harder kinds get introduced. The waves also increase in difficulty as you move up through the bosses. All the waves have a set timer, though sometimes different, and even if you finish the waves within the time limit, the next wave will come almost immediately (with time in between just enough for a res / drink). After the 8th wave, the boss will come. All the waves require a tremendous amount of AOE dps and at least 4-5 tanks. If you have a prot paladin (well geared), you'll only need around 2 (doesn't have to be prot). Throughout the fight though, you have a lot of NPCs that'll help you, although they are relatively fragile and doesn't do much, their dps is much better than none. For Rage Winterchill, the trash itself is somewhat harder, for he is relatively easy compared with the other bosses.

Here goes the strat. Since the trash is an integral part of the fight (you have to go from wave 1 to him in one go), I'll list the mobs and waves here.
*All the mobs are susceptible to the normal kinds of cc (fear, shackle, sheep) that apply to their type (all of these are undeads except for shadowy necromancers which are humanoids).
Ghouls: These hit fairly hard, hitting cloth for up to 3k. They also enrage, so should be kept off your AoErs at all times. At low health they cannibalize if a body is near, but it shouldn't be much of a problem taking them down amidst the AoE. They are the fodder, if you will.
Crypt Fiends: These are even easier to handle, since they shoot 3 scarabs at ranged that hits for ~800 each if the ranged aggro, giving the tanks plenty of time to take aggro back. They do hit for 3k on cloth in melee range, and they web spit the tanks. Keep an eye out for the rooting effect and you shouldn't have any problem taking them down.
Abominations: A troublesome trash mob. They hit pretty hard, obviously, and they have an melee aura of ~800 a tick. The real danger, though, comes from their stun. If your tank gets stunned while 5+ different mobs are hitting on him/her, that tank will need lots of heals (can't parry, block, dodge, etc).
Shadowy Necromancer: One of the toughest foes to handle. They're completely ranged, and their shadowbolts hit for 3k. More than a couple of these on a ranged and you'll have someone dead pretty fast. They could be feared or sheeped, use these cc to your advantage. They also will summon 2 constructs (melee or caster) if a friendly npc dies, and they'll count towards the number of mobs you need to take down, beware.
Tank strat: Have your main tank up ahead of everyone at all times, since the mobs come and aggro upon proximity. If a specific wave hits hard, the tank could be behind the npcs a bit for the npcs to take the brunt of the assault. Have around 4-5 tanks if you do not have a prot paladin, and just have them try to aggro / hold all of them.
Kite strat: The Alliance camp that you start in has a lot of friendly npcs. However, they do not aggro unless a mob is in their vicinity. Having the friendly npcs helping you dps the waves (and the boss) is pretty time conserving. Have one hunter randomly pick a trash mob (mark it for the tanks to see so they don't taunt it) and kite it (frost trap, concussion shot) to Jaina Proudmoore, aggro'ing all the npc mages/riflemen as you go. Another hunter should kite another mob to the left of Jaina, aggro'ing the riflemen back there.
Raid strat: The tanks sometimes will take spike damage from stuns / shadowbolts, so have your healers be aware of what mobs are coming. The AoE should hold off until they're sure the tanks have aggro. The best way to get this done would be to mark a mob with a kill mark and everyone burn it down first (mark a second one if needed), then initial AoE. All the raid should be at the bottom of the ramp in front of Jaina just before the entrance to the camp. Drink whenever you can in between waves, and if someone dies, he/she can run back in if ressing isn't possible. Note that running back won't be possible if you aggro Rage. As for the melee dps and non AoErs, have a tank keep marking a kill target for them to focus on.
If you have a prot paladin (well geared), you've just made this 100x easier for your self. Have him aggro all the mobs (consecrate, all that jazz), and wait a few seconds before AoE. With the right buffs (Salv, Tranq Air Totem), the AoE shouldn't have to stop, and the waves will go down really really fast.
Waves:
1) 10 ghouls
2) 10 ghouls 2 crypt fiends
3) 6 ghouls 6 crypt fiends
4) 6 ghouls 4 crypt fiends 2 necromancers
5) 2 ghouls 6 crypt fiends 4 necromancers
6) 6 ghouls 6 abominations(!)
7) 4 ghouls 4 necromancers 4 abominations(!)
8) 6 ghouls 4 crypt fiends 2 abominations 2 necromancers
9) Rage Winterchill
The Boss:
Rage winterchill, aside from his melee, has 3 abilities that can't be avoided. He should be tanked at Jaina.
Frost Nova: Exactly as it sounds, he randomly frost novas everyone in place for 6 seconds occassionally. It does a little bit of damage, but you should just ignore it.
Death and Decay: He randomly puts this under a player. However, it's an AoE, and the range is HUGE. Anyone caught in it should move out ASAP, and move a lot they should, to make sure they're completely out of it. It deals 15% of ppls max hp per second, so it's pretty nasty. Heal through this. He doesn't coincide this with the frost nova (thank goodness).
Icebolt: The primary thing you have to watch out for. He very often randomly targets a player and does a 1 second cast. When the ice bolt hits, the target will be dealt 5-6k dmg and then 2.5k each second afterwards for 4 seconds. That's a total of ~15k dmg dealt. He/she will be frozen so cannot pot/healthstone. It is up to the healers to keep the targeted person alive with shield / very fast heals. This is what will wipe your raids if your healers can't handle the fast healing. Use a target of target macro to instantly heal the target the moment Rage switches. It is possible to PvP trinket out of the ice block effect (and the remaining 4 ticks of 2.5k).
Strat: Basically, get the npcs involved, keep your tank up, run out of death and decays, and bomb those heals on the icebolted player. The ice bolts comes unwarned and Rage could target 2 very fast in succession. If you've got the bolt healing down, he's cakewalk.
*I didn't do a full strat for Kara / Gruul / Mag / most of ZA because I feel since lots of guild are on them, there're already many different strats floating around. However, if the demand for them is high...

Is there a way to predict where "death and Decay" will appear, so the raid can take measures to avoid it? I was fighting him last night and was trying to come up with a safe spot if there is one.

Just wanted to know how other guilds are dealing with the loot from the trash in Hyjal. Correct me if i'm wrong but if you wipe on the trash, the corpses disappear along with the loot? So is it best to need/greed on loot and sort out DKP later e.g. give the loot a value of 100dkp or something. On one of our runs there was a lengthy discussion on who should get an item, we then stupidly wiped before the boss and the loot disappeared. Master looter for this or not?

this boss is really easy my guild 1 shot him the first time we tried him just have everyone use their pvp trinket when ice blocked (not frost nova) and get out of death and decay and you have easy t6 quality gear

Pugged him last night, killed him second try (half the raid didn't know what death and decay or ice bolt was the first try).
Once the RL actually explained the fight, he went down easy.
Most people were in t4/t5 equivalent gear.
