It took me just under 1500 casts to get Old Ironjaw, and under 30 to get Old Crafty. I am also horde so had my fair share of being ganked.

The drop rate is fine as it is.

I would be very disappointed if they were to change these to be faction specific or change the drop rates. They're meant to be rare fish. They're meant to be rare achievements. Not everyone is supposed to gain every achievement in the game unless they put a lot of effort into it.

I just caught Old Crafty in Orgrimmar (NE Druid) and am quite proud of the fact that between the ganking and my persistence (with the help of some pure dumb luck) I managed to pull it off. It's easy to sit in a "safe" place and fish to your heart's content until you get lucky with a drop. It's truly an achievement to pull it off in a city of the opposing faction with the threat of constant death at your back (and front, and sides).

If they were going to change them to be faction specific, I would really hope that it was Alliance needs to fish up Old Crafty in Org, while Horde need to fish up Old Ironjaw in IF. Personally, I hope they keep it for both though. Still working on my Old Ironjaw, 1100 casts and counting.

Just fished him up in Org. I'm Alliance. Amazingly, took only about 10 attempts!

Maybe they changed the drop rate, and maybe I'm really, really, really, really lucky. :)

Once you get into The Valley of the Spirits, run behind the Mage Trainer Hut. It's a great place to hide and you can cast your line if you're facing the way you came in.

After 178 fishing attempts, ding! Despite which city your in, just put on some music and talk to guildies/look at info to keep you interested for the moment. If that doesn't sufface just go to the conveniently placed bg's and take out your stress on others.

Tip: I am not sure if Ironforge illuminates the water as it moves, but fish facing south in Org if you want less eye cramps.

I wonder whether the drop rate of Old Crafty might have been raised in 3.0.2; I caught him in 3 casts. I've fished in Org many many times over the years (not sure when he was introduced) and never caught him. Then last night I decided to try to catch him. I settled in for a few hours of fishing and ended up only being there for a minute or two.

I just watched an alliance character get 25 Fish, and about 5 casts later he lands this. I'm sure I'm over 500 already with no luck.

There are two possible choices for fishing up both of these fish.

Ironforge:
The Mystic Ward - Right in front of the mage trainers there is a pool of water. This is a rather good spot for the Alliance, as most people seem to only fish in the Forlorn Cavern... for the Horde, it's suicide.

The Forlorn Cavern - Pretty close to the fishing trainer in IF. The best choice for the Horde by far... as it's somewhat out of the way, and you can nestle yourself in the back corner and hope no one wants you to die.

Honorable mention: Lava - You can fish in lava. For the Alliance, there really isn't much point in this. For the Horde, you may be able to find a nice spot where no one will see you... but with the guards at level 75, I wouldn't recommend it.

Orgrimmar:
The Valley of Spirits - The area where the Priest/Mage trainers are. A pretty nice spot for both sides... Horde side, no drawbacks really... Alliance side it's a rather nice spot as long as you stay out of sight... only problem will be Hunters tracking humanoid or someone portalling in seeing your in the chat log.

The Valley of Honor - Pretty close to the fishing trainer in Org. The best choice for the Alliance no doubt... you can tuck yourself away behind the rocks under the waterfall and fish life away. For the Horde its also a good spot... nice and wide open, with easy access to the trainer and a vendor (for lures and trash fish).

My personal experience: I just finished this on my Shaman and I must say, I got extremely lucky. It took me about 700 caught fish in IF to catch Old Ironjaw, and less than 70 in Org for Old Crafty. I managed to die 3 times in the process... one due to walking head first into the guards and a scout between the Drag and the Valley of Honor, and then twice by members of the Horde faction... once in VoS and again in VoH. Personally, I think I used up all my good luck getting these 2 achievements... all my rolls from now on will be 1's no doubt.

The Drop Rate SUCKS!
I think I fished around 450 fish in and still no drop. The other annoying thing is hunters tracking me and and shoting I guess "There is a naked gnome fishing here!"
and getting ganked.
The best place is just behind the tree next to the mage trainer.
I asked a GM about the rate and he said they have a very low drop rate. :(
Soo more fishing for me to do.
And please dont gank people who are naked and have a fishing rod in their hand :D

how do you people even get into org at all? do you all corpse run? I can't stealth beyond the 75 elites in front and rear entrance, so unless there's a backdoor somewhere i wonder how you do not get attacked by guardsm, or corpse run your way into valey of spirit/honor

Edit: instant dismount either entrance if i try to ride in, and stealth once im out of combat, then i live around 3 yards

Go to the Ashara Gate. Equip your ridding crop. Take of your Gear and /charge.
As soon as you pass the door strafe right to some rocks there and you will be fine after then ride to the valley of spirits and go all the way back to the tree and stone. Becareful annoying low level horde hunters like yelling out your location.

Note for all fishing fans like me who are totally going for Salty Title:

Old Ironjaw and Old Crafty are NOT necessary for the Accomplished Angler !

So you can get Salty without spending days on these fish :-)! Happy fishing!

I got Old Crafty today at Ogrimmar's Valley of the Spirits, after 798 fish. I got to kill some alliance as well, so i'm close to complete the City Defender achievement as well.

finally! 296 fishes and than bam! there he was :)

Took me about 2 hours and I raised my skill from 150 to 214 at that time.

I recomend you to do this while lvling your fishing otherwiese you need alot of patience :P

Best spot for me was at the waterfall in VOH because I got ganked a few times at VOS.

Now I say:

The bug using the Crocolisks quest appears to have been corrected. As a NE, I went to IF with the daily. I removed autoloot, and proceeded to fish, not picking up the crocolisk. After 25 casts, crocolisk dropped 24 times, but no old crafty.

How to make fishing less boring
There's no denying it, fishing gets boring after about the 100th time you throw your bobble into the waters to catch, for example, this fish. Here are some of the techniques i use to make it fun.

Step 1.
Download/buy some comedies (I for example watched seasons 1-5 of Scrubs while i fished my way through 1-320 fishing ), movies, any kind of motionpicture that you enjoy and could watch for +4 hours.

Step 2.
Download BS player/Media player classic (Those are atleast the ones i know that have this feature) and go to Options. There is an option called "Always on top". Switch that on. Then, turn on your Scrubs or whatever you want to watch, and place it so it doesn't get in the way of your bobble (Bobler or whatever that thing is that floats on the surface of the water).

Step 3
We're almost done. Now, go to your fishing spot (Ironforge or Orgimmar in case you're after these two lovely's), and bid your Fishing skill to some easy to press (F for example) button. Then turn on "Auto-loot" (Remember, you still have to press "Yes i want to loot this BoP fish" button when you do finally get this lovely piece of epicness) from WoW's options. Next order of business, go to Sound options, and switch it on so it makes sounds when a fish has been "caught" (They are either Sound effects or Ambient sounds, so turn both on.). Now finely toon it so you can listen to your show and you can hear it when the fish is caught. Now, fish away!

This has worked for like +2 years for me now, and i finally have a place to post my comments ^_^. Hope you enjoy'd my little tricks and tips, and i hope to see some lovely "Salty" tittled people running around!

Show ideas (I'm a comedy guy, so... this will reflect that)
- Scrubs (7 seasons of pure awesomeness)
- Friends
- Pablo Fransisco stand up comedy's (You can also watch these on Google-video, but then this trick of mine wouldn't work ;) )
- Third Rock From The Sun
- Two and a half men
- V for Vendetta (Not a show, a movie)
- Dark Knight ( Read above)

That should last atleast 3 characters worth of fishing. Have a good one!

This is a small problem with this technique, but the way to get around this is to get far from other people, and it isn't really hard. Not a whole lot of people (atleast on Darksorrow) are fishing for these lovelys.

took me about 600 casts to get it. I got my fishing from 0 to 235 with this.
I was always fishing when waiting in a BG queue or something.. now that I got Old Crafty I have nothing else to do in orgrimmar while waiting ;<

On a side note, you can get crocolisks in IF now too. I'd imagine you can get them in all the cities....although the Old Crafty trick doesnt seem to apply to Old Ironjaw.

Confirmed. I got Old Crafty in 12 casts, then immediately went to Ironforge. Skilled up from 123 to 156 so far without seeing Old Ironjaw, though every single cast has had a crocolisk in it.

They are Sound Effects. Turn off Ambient Sounds, as that's only the sound the water makes against the shore of whatever pond you're fishing at.

Be prepared to be annoyed by other people fishing near you, as their bobbers will often be just as loud as yours.

With patch 3.08 this bug no longer occurs because blizz changed the percentage for the fishingdaily questitems back to it's dropchance prior 3.02 where you sometimes had to fish 10min+

Tried fishing him up in Valley of Honor with the Crokolisks in the city quest on my log. Cast about ~150 times, had the Baby crokolisk show up about 6-8 times, but not Old Crafty at all. I was in a group with a fellow fisherman, but might be farfetched if being in a group had anything to do with chances of fishing him up... There was also server restart coming in 15 minutes, so I decided to loot up Baby crokolisk and hs out before the restart :<. Going to delete Baby crok from my inventory and try casting more tomorrow.

In the end the chances are:
1. I was extremely unlucky (comparing other posters have catched him on their first or second cast)
2. This daily quest trick has been hotfixed in 3.0.8 patch

As of 3.0.8, I took my alliance toon to phased version of Orgrimmar via the dragonblight quest sequence. I had crocolisks in the city.

It took me about 15 casts to catch the crocolisk, and another 50 to catch old Crafty.
Still struggling to get Old Ironjaw though.

Its true i caught at about 340 time, started with 273 fishing ended with 304, don't now if its clue or not but in the end i was fishing inside the waterfall. Oh and i am in patch 3.0.8.

I previously did Crocolisks in the City. I am in the "safe" Org instance. Fishing for 3 different days leveling up from 290 skill to 353 as of last night. I am burned out, but don't want to lose the safety of the instance. I have completed the Fate Up Against Your Will quest, but have not taken the SW portal back to finish the next one. Can I just leave to take care of business and come back? Is this a bug with the latest patch?

Well so far I have fished from 136 to 450, over 1600 casts in Org, with and w/o the croc daily quest and no sign of Old Crafty. I've tried w/ and w/o autoloot as well. I've no idea what to do except keep plugging away at it... I'm beginning to dread the thought of going to IF...

Twis 10 past 6 when i woke up that mourning outside of the great city of our horde. i rode into town on my trusty kodo, knowing work would start as usual, a trip to the market to check the prices of fish before heading to capture such beast my self.

As i stepped back upon my trusty stead i heard the noise from nearby fishers as i caught part of their conversation.
"...ripped my real in half....fish said to be cursed by the gods themselves...worth a fortune"
And from there i knew this day was like none other.

I sat onto a rock and put on my hat and and then put my lure on my line and began my day. As the day went on it seemed i had caught more fish then ever before but they were meaningless to me. I wanted this fish i had heard of, nay i needed this fish! And so it went on, and as the other fishers went home at 5 i stayed hoping to test my luck.

At half past 6 my food supplies were low. I took the last bite of my sandwich and dropped some of the meat onto my lap. As i went to pick it up i felt a tug on my line, but not just any tug, the tug of a master fish! IT WAS ON!

Grasping my line and throwing my half devoured sandwich flying into the face of a passing guard i began my fight. I pulled to my left to no affect so i pulled the other way to find myself drug off my rock and into the pond. There i saw it with horror as it went.SNAP! my reel was done. but i was not done yet. i leap forward with my left hand lunging at the fish but to results. i quickly withdrew my knife from my waist band that i had used to cut my line. I throw it up and caught it with my right hand and stabbed and slashed at the water. But the beast was too quick and i dropped it into the mud! i began to sprint after it but i tripped and fell into the mud. There i was, covered in mud and half into a pound and as my shame rood up my body as strangers laughed at me i saw it. A ripple in the water at first, but then bigger, faster,faster, it was coming back for me! I saw the jaws of Old crafty and i know i would have to think fast. and then my idea came and i knew it was time for redemption! i twist my head to 1 side and prepared and then...SMACK. i lunged forward with my horn stabbed at the fish. all was silent. silence. even the laughter of the crowd had gone for there was 50 no 100 gathers watching the epic struggle. and then i saw it. a cloud of red. and then a trickle down my horn! i had caught and slain old craft. His blood ran down and i roared with the battle cry that would become the saying of adventurers and heros for ages! FOR THE HORDE! i ran out of the pond and too the market but then i decided not to sell the fish. no the money wasn't worth it. i hung it in my living room right above the pelt of the feared Hogger. And so to this day in the city they tell of the epic battle of fisherman vs beast and how it is truly possible to defeat such fish in a wonderous place known as, The World, Of warcraft!

First read about crafty while researching the quest from wrathgate.

My druid was leveling fishing while phased in Ogrimmar,got crafty on around her 80th cast.

Then I read about the croc trick,tried on my warlock today.Turned down the baby croc twice,then read trick no longer worked.

So, I took baby croc next time it showed.Decided I would fish for an hour before giving up.

At around my 100th cast,hour was up.Was about to hearth,decided I'd give it one more cast,and got Crafty.

Now for my hunter :)

So, I put on my title Ambassador, put on my non-threatening RP gear. I go to fish at Orgrimmar and seem to do it pretty well, until some bloodthirsty orc warrior had to come there, "kek" insatiably and kill me, causing seemingly everyone from Orgrimmar to come up to my corpse and /spit etc. So much for diplomacy!

There should be a better achievement than just catching old crafty. One of my toons (named Milwaukee) caught old crafty on his first catch. Milwaukee now has a fishing skill of 2. that should be a feat of strength.

I was in Org trying to skill up to 300 and hit my 1000 fish achievement (which I did), figuring I'd catch Old Crafty in the meanwhile. I was 200 casts in when some L80 comes and starts fishing next to me. A few minutes later, *ding* he gets his 50 fish achievement, so I'm thinking hey, he's starting from ground zero. A couple minutes later, *ding* he gets his Old Crafty achievement.

This story tells me many things:
1. There is no minimum skill required to fish up Old Crafty
2. It's better to be lucky than good
3. If you watch somebody fish up old Crafty you might as well give up on it for the rest of the day.

Got it after 576 catches, fished all in Valley of Honor. I started with 230 skill and finished with 300, so I think it's even better if you just start fishing there with 1 skill, and level up the profession. Gotta fish Old Ironjaw now :P.

Fishing BoP items no longer brings up the confirmation window, you automatically loot it and it binds. You don't need to watch out for the confirmation window anymore and can spam fishing with autoloot on.

This achievement wasn't so boring than I thought, because there were 2-3 hordes killing us and we did kill them too about 15 minutes with my friend.

I just got this on my Alliance DK, 425 casts. They have indeed fixed the Crock quest thing, because previous to 3.1 when I did old Iron Jaw, it took me less than 25 casts with that Quest.

Finally managed to catch Old Crafty today! Took me just under 6 hours of fishing spread over 4 days. I was fishing in Valley of Honour, using the old /lie trick to hide behind the rocks. In total I fished up:

Bristle Whisker Catfish: 204 = 20%
Longjaw Mud Snapper: 609 = 59.7%
Brilliant Small Fish: 197 = 19.3%
Lesser Mana Potion: 2 = 0.2%
Lesser Healing Potion: 1 = 0.1%
17 pound Catfish: 3 = 0.3%
19 pound Catfish: 3 = 0.3%

So Old Crafty came up on my 1020th cast!

Unfortunately I was so excited/surprised to see him I forgot to take a screen shot with the achievement showing :-(

Just got Old Crafty on my 17th cast, I may just be lucky, was fishing in The Valley of Spirits, I'm also Alliance, you can go to the back corner and stand behind a stone and Horde won't even notice you.

For me it took about 2000 casts for crafty. That took ages and considering horde were gankin me every second it was annoying. Then my friend said why dont i get ironjaw so i did. 5 casts. asked another mate who had both and they said it was about 100 for ironjaw and 1900 for crafty. Im guessing either were really lucky when in ironforge or bliz wants to make ally wait loads and get ganked just for a fish

If you are alliance - here is how i did it, and it just took a bit of persistence:

1 - go to Valley of Heroes in Orgrimmar, hide behind the rocks under the waterfall there, so no horde will see you

2 - position yourself so you have a nice view of the bobber, since it's a tight place for fishing

3 - Just be persistant, it WILL drop

I caught good ol' Crafty after 2h 30m, and around 500 fishing swings. Saturday morning, so Orgrimmar seemed empty also, had no troubles with NPCs nor hordies.

My only question is since the Diplomat title revolves around Orgrimmar and Stormwind.......they should have renamed "IronJaw" to something a bit different so that it could be in Stormwind.

Since the Horde fish is in the Horde capital so should the Ally fish...leastways makes sense to me

Just a note that you can no longer fish in front of the Mystic Ward in IF, nor in the lava any more.

As Alliance, I had more luck at the Valley of Honor than the Valley of Spirits simply because there were less people around no matter what time of day. Got jumped several times near the portal, during which time I only managed to catch the following:
Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper - 254
Bloated Mud Snapper - 1 (contained Shadowgem)
Raw Brilliant Smallfish - 70
Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish - 78
19 Pound Catfish - 2

After that I gave up and headed over to the waterfall in Valley of Honor where I found the perfect fishing spot behind the rocks, but just in front of the waterfall itself. Visibility is really poor unless you tilt your camera angle so you're looking from directly overhead. This way you have quite a view of the pool in front of the falls so you can see incoming Horde (if any) and you also have a great view of your bobber even if it's cast into the rocks as so frequently happens. Just mouse over the rocks and you sometimes find the bobber clickable. If not, simply recast and keep going. In this spot I didn't get jumped even once, and I caught:
Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper - 144
Raw Brilliant Smallfish - 40
Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish - 40
17 Pound Catfish - 1
Lesser Mana Potion - 1
Lesser Healing Potion - 1
Old Crafty - 1

Going by the number of nightcrawlers I used in my entire time there, I estimate it took less than 150 minutes to fish him up. By the way, did this as a level 63 balance druid, so getting jumped usually meant getting one-shotted, and also, running over to Valley of Honor meant endless corpse runs because of all the higher level guards between The Drag and there, but it was worth it in the end to be left alone by players once I got there. Only reason I persisted was because I'd just fished up Old Ironjaw right before and wanted the matching pair :) Between these 2 guys, the coins from the Dalaran fountain and the sewer rat, I'd be happy if I never fished again in my life... or until the next Stranglethorn event <sigh>

If you're Alliance then the Valley of Spirits is the easiest to get to by a wide margin. Go through the back entrance located at the very top right corner of The Barrens, not Durotar. Once over the small bridge go around the bend to the right, very short distance. There's 3 large rocks, one very tall in the middle though nearer the back wall. Good place to fish from and to hide behind when you want to log out and back in. I spirit walked all around Ogrimmar and its a heckuva place to find your way in if your not use to it.

On a sidenote, I've fished with Horde in Ironforge, and though I don't have Old Crafty yet I was there a while today. For a lot of players there seems to be an unwritten rule that you don't attack a player while they're fishing which I think is kinda cool.

But yes, you can always be ganked at anytime.

Edit: actually even better is to go to the back wall and get in the nook between the rock and tree.

Edit II: Took me a full week, a couple of long sits and many small ones of 15 minutes to a half hour. Had to be over 2,000 casts, caught many 17 and 19 pounders, couple pair of pants and a mace.

Some extra advice: keep your view from above, not in body. Some horde in demon-lion form jumped right in my face and I swear my heart stopped for a second.

I decided to go for the achievement with my 80 lvl alliance paladin. I read useful information from the above comments and i went for it. I decided to go on Orgrimmar as earlier in the morning as possible. I went there 6 o'clock server time (7 local time) on a Sunday morning. I didn't expect to find people so early in the morning but i did find two 80's. After a short fight i died and then returned back. It took me 5 minutes to recover my body so both players had left. I went behind the waterfall and i /sleep to hide as best as possible. After almost two hours and some 300 catches, i caught Old Crafty.

Took me a total of um.. 110 casts I think? I had downloaded fishing buddy but forgot to actually put the add-on. (Smoking weed is bad, mmmmkay?) So I might've missed maybe 5 or 10 fish. Time was probably about 20 minutes, again not sure because BGs popped.

You'll find more horde activity in Valley of Spirits because the portals land there (if mage ports you or if you take a city portal from Shatt/Dal), so if you're Alliance, just watch for that. I saw a couple Alliance fishing in this tight space between the hut and the wall. I leave 'em alone; I know the pain of visiting other cities for achievements and the long run back is teh suck. The other spot in Valley of Honor might be okay, I stood next to the fishing trainer so I could sell loots and not have bag space issues. Alliance, not sure where you'd stand in that area. By the waterfall? Not much horde activity there, at least late at night, unless you run into the random person running to talk to npcs there.

Much easier time-wise for the amount of time it took fishing him up.

Next up are the giant rat and the sea turtle mount... and Mr. Pinchy. And the pets from Mr. Barlo.

And auto loot is the best. Lazy clicking ftw.

Oh, I didn't have the crocolisk in the city quest from Barlo, I had completed previously and turned in the quest and got Snarly as a present.

Old Crafty and Old Ironjaw, got them both the first time I actually went with the intent to do it. Total time spent, about 2.5 hours. Total casts? Oh lord only knows. 400? It's really just luck. Sometimes mine is REALLY awesome. Or REALLY bad.

As of 10/22/2009 I am no longer able to catch anything with any of my toons while on the "Diplomat" quests while fishing in Orgrimmar. I get skill level increases however nothing is being caught. I have filed a bug and it was confirmed hotfixed on one server but a client bug on another. I'll go with the hotfixed since it doesn't work on any of the 3 realms I play on.

you wouldn't beleive my luck with this achivement, my fishing skill was a good 200 when i went there with a friend that was crazy about getting this one, he had 450 and a great fishing pole mine was crap at the time.

so, we went in (we're alliance) he went in first to get aggro (like a gentleman) and i had my soulstone on me so i got killed near the lake by the cascade i revived and hid myself there, he also got killed and went in after me, we where hidden in the cascade a great spot for this achivement.

so at the time i really wasn't into the achivements thing (now i have 6050 points) and i was telling this friend i had to go somewhere else, so after like 10 min. i thougth to myself ok this is my last cast and after this i'm leaving so i threw the line and got the slash and surprise surprise i got the fish.

well you can imagine my friend was really mad, cause after i left he spended like four hours triyng to get the fish and he didn't.

well for me it was pretty easy, i fell sorry for the horde they don't have a spot in ironforge to get hidden like we do.

Well, that was lucky. I was at 266 when I started and caught him right after I hit 274, after catching 37 mudsnappers, 15 smallfish, and 17 catfish. So not too bad at all.

I did not catch him but I did find that fishing behind the waterfall is safe for the Alliance. While I was there Horde kept jumping of a cliff into the water in front of me for some reason, but I was never spotted. The bobber could not be seen because of the waterfall. But if I scanned the area in front of me the little cog showed up and I would listen for the water sound to know when to reel it in. This became difficult when a second alliance player showed up because both bobbers made the same noise, but I was able to mange it with the timing of our casts. The other Alliance fisherman was further up so he could see his bobber and was more visible but still was not attacked by the Horde. If I were the Horde I would regularly scout this area for hidden Alliance. After reading the posts about Old Iron Jaw I am going to scout the pool in Ironforge.
The Alliance live to kill the Horde and vice versa. Otherwise, what is the use of playing this game?

I picked Valley of Spirits seeing as it was less occupied with 80's. More just little level 15's and such. Stripped down to my skivvies and used potion of lesser invisibility to skip past the guards and avoid trouble that way. Tucked myself into a corner on the western side and sat down to make myself less noticable (also removed my title). Spent a good few hours fishing and getting nothing before I had to log off. Logged back on the next day, still in the same spot and really not wanting to waste my day with more hours of fishing.
Still, I decided to cast my line just one more time before hearthing and wouldn't you know it, I caught the little sucker

And was never noticed once by the horde

Caught Old Crafty just this morning, as an Alliance player - the "quest" for this Achievement comes with excitement not encountered in most WoW activities!

I'm a Warrior. L77. I came to Orgrimmar specc'd, geared, and buffed for DPS, in Berserker stance, late last night (about 11:30 PST). I figured fighting would draw attention of any nearby players, so the quicker it was over, the better. This toon is a Night Elf, so it has Shadowmeld, and is a capped Herbalist, so it also has Lifeblood. I figured that in a crowd I could stay alive long enough to take down one or two guards and fade out to leave combat if a hopeless fight remained.

I brought a full stack of Elixir of Camouflage (L50; "...cannot be tracked" 1 hour), noting that others had mentioned they'd been detected by hunters and other trackers. Gotta say - what I wish I'd also brought is a hefty stack of Blackened Worg Steak (22500 HP / 30s "...track Humanoids" 1 hour)! It's not enough that they cannot see you on their mini-map - you really need to know when they're close by. Also, of course, the getting in is easier if you can track both guards and players.

The west gate is the better way in. There is lots of activity in The Valley of Strength, where the Bank and AH are; you don't want to have to go through it. Guards (L75) on the bridge must be fought in pairs (at best), but I was able to get across without much problem. I got through the gateway with a final clash with a single guard on the inside. I moved off the path to the right, then continued down the "S" to the southeast, mounted. Probably not a good idea, although the path seemed deserted. A player spotted me and took a ranged shot before I saw her and could 'meld...

To avoid players, I chose the route around to the North, through The Valley of Wisdom. Some players were still around, especially near the Hall of Legends. I hid in rocks to the right of the path, 'melded, until roving NPCs were clear and the loitering players seemed to be gone. By running along the right edge of the path I was able to avoid aggroing the two stationary NPCs. Pretty scary, though - players seemed to blast down the path at odd times - but I got away with it. There were some more close Guard clashes as I got onto The Drag and into the "right-left" hallway leading into The Valley of Honor. I 'melded into the corner in the left-turn portion as an elite L80 Scout approached from that Valley, but he seemed to see me from about ten yards away...

Luckily I'd died close enough to the exit so that I could rez in the Valley of Wisdom, just to the right of the entrance, barely out of aggro distance of the nearest guard. I 'melded immediately, of course, but there seemed to be no guards or players there at that time (sure wish I'd brought the Blackened Worg Steak, though!). I moved further east to be clear of the gate, then ran north into the water toward the falls. I found a position east of the falls right against the rocks where I was pretty sure I was out of sight. I equipped my pole and began casting.

The first thing I learned about fishing under those conditions was that seeing the bobber is often not possible, because of rocks, weeds, and falling water. Still, I could often guess where it was from the line and get the cog icon.

After 220 successful casts, a 'lock at L80 found and ganked me. With the food buff, I might have been able to 'meld when I saw he was close, but as it is I can only guess at how I was detected. The Untrackable buff was still up, but there is a little path above where I was, and he might have passed close enough to see my bars... or he might've noticed my casting... In any case, I figured I'd get some sleep and avoid any revisits. I logged out with my ghost at my corpse.

This AM I got on again (6:45A PST), checked out the area (daylight, but empty), rezzed, and resumed. 160 casts later, I finally had Old Crafty, and was hearthing before the Achievement banner had started to fade!

My results, across the two sessions:

62 Raw Brilliant Smallfish
2 17-pound Catfish
1 19-pound Catfish

I guess my luck was pretty incredible. I snuck into Orgrimmar, stole the flame for the Midsummer Achievement, died a couple of times on my way to the Valley of Honor, then cast three times before catching Old Crafty and getting the Diplomat achievement. It probably helped that I did it at seven in the morning, before Horde woke up. : )

It took me two sessions to get Crafty. First one was about 20 minutes before I got killed by a rogue who didn't mean to leave and took my fishing spot. The second one was about 80 minutes long and I got killed by a hunter who could track me.

Few tips for the Alliance:

Valley of Spirits is easy to reach from the back entrance to the city. Put on some shield spell, if you can, mount up and follow the road cross the bridge down to the Valley.
Nearest NPCs in Valley are lvl40, so you should be safe at lvl50+.
Cross the Valley lake and try to hide under a palm tree and in water bushes. You can also /sit or /sleep while fishing, so you won't be easy to spot.
Turn off your title. Having "Name of the Ashen Verdict" above is like you had a target painted on you. Being a member of the guild with a very long name, on the other side, is something you cannot change.
There is a point in the nearby hut where the Horde players are being ported from Dalaran, so traffic is high there. But most people just run down the stairs from the hut and then they run to the city, so they should not spot you, unless they turn back.
Bind fishing to a key, so you can just click key and then right click a bobber. Have music muted and sound effects maxed. You will hear water splash when a fish is hooked.
To make sure you don't miss Crafty by casting again, download NoBoPWarning. AddOn automatically confirms you want to loot the item.
Have /salute, /bow, and /thanks emotes ready. People wont attack you immediately (except rogues :), when they see you and they need to think a while if they could kill you easily or they better keep their PvP flag off. Being nice may save you and I even got a /pat back twice!

I disagree, Hordes have it way to easier.

You just have to go in a dark cave where nobody ever passes by, and stay there. If someone actually
do pass by, the chances that he will look in the cave are minimal.

The Alliance on the other hand have to stand either next to the Arena and Battlegrounds masters or
next to the Hall of Legends / Portals areas where movement in and out is always major.

So yes, a dark cave in a never visited place vs a spot next to portals/battlemasters.

Valley of honor is so much better, there are the rocks near the waterfall which provide an excellent cover and hide you from anyone. Just try to get there without fighting (like I had to do) and you won't have problems

I just fished up old crafty today. Fishing Buddy had me at 191 fish with drop rate of old crafty at 0.5%

I am sure I just got lucky, but I was fishing in the valley of honor at the base of the waterfall in the weeds. I don't know if it matters, but it seems that's where most people catch him.

So I decided to try the spot west of Valley of Honor, like Ushikawa mentioned. You don't even have to hide behind the waterfall because no horde ever goes there - at least that was my case.

915 Succesfull casts over a 7.5hr period, and still no old crafty.
The waterfall in the valley of honor is by far the best spot, i was only killed a total of 4 times. (twice by guards getting into position, and twice by players) However i probably should have died a few more times, but due to me being a nightelf druid as people started hitting me, i shadowmelded to drop from combat and flight formed up to safety, waited til they got bored/left then continued to fish.

Oh god i just cant believe it. i got more than 4k fish for it. i got ironjaw in 3 mins and sewers rat in 5 mins. but i just cant believe how much work i did for it. i spent 4h 1st time and 5h 2nd time for getting it. valley of honors is way better anyway. much easier to hide from hordes. and looks like the drp chance is higher there. i got it there. last tries and got it at last.

I must have been extremely lucky last night but I found a nice little spot in the Valley of the Spirits(25.5, 70.0) where the guards didnt aggro me and only encountered a couple horde, that just flew or rode their mount by without bothering me. I just stood there in the corner and cast into that little body of water and 222 casts later....woohoo...Old Crafty.

Since the Shattering this Achievement should be much harder for the Alliance, since the redesign of both Stormwind and Orgrimmar the mass of all players have been drawn to both of these cities, however, the Horde side of this Achievement only requires them to do this in Ironforge, of which is a complete ghost town now, and the area you have to fish is secluded (with the exception of guards of course). Won't stop me from trying to get this one though ;)

A new consideration Alliance players must deal with are Wind Rider patrols. I snuck my way into Orgrimmar, found a nice secluded spot on the roof (Western Earthshrine) and got PewPew'd by a Wind Rider from above before I knew what was happening.

I spent about two hours (again) fishing behind the waterfall with no luck of catching Old Crafty, but horde caught me three times. Only one goblin really attacked me, but when I bowed to her she ceased all attacks and I got a welcoming wave like with other two encounters. This achieve was insanely boring! But.... I stuck with it and got it! (Thank God!) I went to Valley of Honor and hid in the waterfall. I died twice and got a couple visitors who left me alone after I bowed to them, but not much traffic. I could see people flying over but they either could not see me or they just left me alone.

Check out 34.2, 77.9 in Goblin Slums of Orgrimmar. It's underneath an upward sloping cliff face - very hard to see from the air. No NPCs roam near here. I have caught 377 fish so far with no interference. Someone would need to swim by in the water or fly right over you to see you here.

I finally got this today, after 8 months of trying on an off.

Here is what I did:

Went to 56.34, just to the right of the waterfall. There is a cleft between the rocks where you can sit to hide in the weeds but still see the water for casts.
Took off all my gear, including my tabard so there were no bright colors
Turned off my title so my name was smaller
Used the Elixir of Camoflage
Turned on auto-loot so I didn't waste time having to pick up the fish

I have 525 fishing and used the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole so I had water breathing (this is so I could go to the bottom of the waterfall when I needed a break).

It took about 90 minutes and I only saw one horde, an 85 flagged for pvp came by but he just waved and left.

I lost count of how many fish, I only had 9 bag slots free once my gear was in but I emptied them all at least twice.

Well I managed to catch old crafty At Valley of Spirits in Orgrimmar my level then was 21 and my fishing skill was 24. I didn't have any quest to do with fishing on at the time and didn't have any boosts or baubles etc to help I was just using the basic level 1 Fishing Rod.

My thanks to the person that posted the information about the waterfall in Orgrimmar. It took four nights of fishing. I was chased off the first three nights when Horde camped the waterfall after I started fishing there. Given the down time when I worked an alt to avoid getting killed, Crafty came MUCH easier that Ironjaw, about 700 casts in Horde territory.

As i spent my free time browsing the achivements, i tossed my line in the old valey of wisdome puddle in hopes of raising my fishing level, when all of a sudden my auto loot flashes befor my eyes, a green name, and then FLASH,chime!~ a box poofs on my display, OLD CRAFTY and i only fished about 5 times. i open my bag in exitement, and click to equip the cute little thing, and then...nothing. my internet takes a poop. today i loged on and giggled like a little girl at my new fishy. time to blap some ally noobs in the face with the ultimate of sushi power!

For Alliance: I flew in very high above the flying guards and dropped straight down behind the waterfall. I did this around 9am server time. Org was very empty and I wasn't seen. I stood behind the waterfall and did my casting. It took me 25 casts and on 26 I picked up "Old Crafty". My fishing lvl was 338 and I used a "Heat treated spinning lure" that I made with engineering.

I flew in and out and caught him without ever being seen or tracked. Lucky day I suppose.

Well I looked at all of the comments before doing this achievement so I thought I would toss in my experience with it.
Started out fishing at 415 fishing level and ended with 525. Just used the jeweled fishing pole and fishing hat, nothing else.

Started fishing in the Valley or Honor BUT after getting fed up with casting in the same spot and seeming to take a lot longer then most of the other peoples posts I decided to switch to Valley of Wisdom and caught him.

I have many a good memory of this fish. When I first started playing WoW a couple years ago I had a mild obsession with achievements. One day I was looking through and saw The Fishing Diplomat and thought to myself "Piece of cake!" After that I took my level 30something Alliance toon and spent a couple hours corpse running to the fishing spot in Orgrimmar and got the achievement. I was happy with myself but while I was corpse running I was looking at achievements and saw the one for Old Crafty so I thought to myself "Hell, I've gone through this much trouble, I may as well stay until I get him."

I spent a few hours fishing and dying in Orgrimmar trying to get the fish to no avail, but I kept at it, I was determined to get this fish. Throughout the day various Hordies would come fish with me, some would kill me, some would just hang out and watch me, I remember at one point a guy called over a bunch of his guildies to fish with me which was pretty cool. One of the more memorable moments I have was when a rogue sneaked up and one shot me, by the time I got back to my body one of the Hordies fishing with me was dueling the rogue that killed me and was absolutely stomping him in the nuts. At some point I found out that people were talking about me in Trade chat because somebody hopped onto an Ally toon to let me know, so various things like this happened more often for the next couple days.

On the third day I fished for a couple hours with the usual hordies hanging out or killing me, I had garnered quite the audience. Finally, after the many many many grueling hours of corpse running, I caught him! I /y well knowing that nobody would understand me but I was still ecstatic. I started dancing with joy and all of the Hordies hanging out with me started dancing as well, I wish I had gotten a screenshot of it to this day. I bowed and started to Hearth, finally achieving my goal, when suddenly I was one shot by another Hordie. Honestly, I thought it was a fitting way to end. My gear was long red from the many deaths to the guards on the way in, so I just took a Rez Sickness and hung out in Stormwind for a while, announcing my achievement in Trade chat with joy.

I just went to Valley of Honor and set myself up under the waterfall for an early morning of casting with no horde about and would you believe it I got him first cast.

Back to bed now making sure I am up tomorrow to put my lottery numbers on :-)

I got this achievement yesterday on my Alliance mage. I flew very high over Orgrimmar, and positioned myself at coordinates 34, 77. This is over the Goblin Slums area. It's a great spot for Alliance players, as there are no patrols nearby and it's not a very busy area. There is an outcropping of the cliff wall that is perfect for concealing you while you fish. So once I was positioned over the spot, I dismounted and hit Slow Fall when I got close to the ground (I'm a mage). But for non-mage players, you can just very quickly fly down to the ground. There are some air patrols, so just watch out for them. Once I was on the ground, I popped an Elixir of Camouflage and backed into the corner under the outcropping, sat down and started fishing. I was not bothered once, and only saw a handful of horde players the entire time I was there. No one came close to where I was fishing. It took me about an hour and a half to catch Old Crafty. I caught approx 200 fish before catching Crafty. I was already lvl 525 fishing, using Jeweled Fishing Pole and Weather-Beaten fishing hat as lure.

I've been trying to get this achievement on my main for over 6 months now off and on. I easily have over 1,000 casts on my main. While I was doing dailies on all of my toons today, I got this achievement on 2 separate toons within 45 minutes of each other. Both toons were on the No Dumping Allowed fishing daily. I was standing right on the bank in-between the Goblin AH and the red and white umbrella. The first toon got it after 5 casts and the 2nd toon got it after 8.

Too bad neither of the toons that got the achievement were my main. :(

This is my first post. So I myself, find myself often looking for achievements that I can do. Lately I thought well, might aswell you know go fishing a bit. So I got a nice fishing hat, plain rod. But my hat gives me +75 fishing. I got it from doing a daily. My fishing at the time was 301+75. So I saw this Old Crafty, looked it up. Saw some peoples stats and wow. I was looking for a long damn day ahead of me. So I went to Valley of Wisdom (45, 47) casted straight out. Third catch I got one. What are the odds of this? I submitted a screen shot.. Maybe they will accept it, until then. I am one happy Orc :)

I manage to catch him in the lake by the valley of honour. I was casting toward the waterfall.

Took me 22 casts (Lucky i guess)

Total & complete luck that I just got Old Crafty. 1:40am on Nazgrel. Was about to log off for the night when decided try my luck. Fished in the Valley of Honor between the mining trainer & the forge. Fishing @ 525 using the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole, Aquadynamic Fish Attractor & the Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat bringing fishing to 525+138. I had one missed cast then got him on the 3rd try. Keep your fingers crossed and if you are 'feeling lucky' follow it and good luck!

I think i got pretty lucky with that:
started at 4:03 am in orgrimmar with my gnome warrior
my begining skill was 304 fishing, after aprox 60-70 times i got lucky and fish up Old Crafty :))
at end my fishing skill was 317, doing it in valley of honor

Got it on my first cast while doing the no dumping allowed fishing daily.

total --------------2465 with a drop rate of 0.04% and yes that is a LOT lower then the so called 0.1% it is suppose to be. An ok spot to fish for old crafty was in the valley of honor under the waterfall. when you get there /sleep and that should help a little with hiding, but you are still going to get camped when you are found so be ready to log out for a little while and come back latter. Also be smart on the times you pick to fish in Orgrimmar if you are an Alliance.

Got sick of trying to catch the damn turtle so thought I'd go waste some time trying to catch the Giant Sewer Rat in Dalaran instead, 6 casts later, Giant Sewer Rat pet yay! Back to the turtle, 3 weeks later still no turtle *yawn* let's go get killed in Org trying to catch Old Crafty, 46 casts later... Got em! Yay! Now, back to that damn turtle!

If you are Alliance and want to try getting Old Crafty, head to the Valley of Spirits, (co-ords 32,72), /sleep just behind the long grass, keep an eye open and good luck!

I sat just inside the west gate in the corner ( 25,70 ) and caught him on the second day of trying a little over 200 casts. Did at least 800 the first day.

Got killed by one horde. He left after he got make love not warcraft. No camping.

I don't actually hate all of you that got Old Crafty n in less than 2k casts (much), but I am jealous of the time you saved. I went between Valley of Honor and Valley of Spirits over about 5 days on and off. Also I'm alliance on a pvp server.

A total of 3118 casts. I got killed numerous times at the VoH, but Spirits worked out great for me. Only saw 2 horde in 1700 casts, and the level 12 hunter that spotted me decided to pull all the guards at the gates to me which wasn't too nice.

I went through so many stages of emotional turmoil fishing for this. Nervousness, boredom, anger, hate, rage, and finally a nice thrill at the end. I was convinced for awhile you couldn't catch it at 29, 70 right next to the western gate, south side. But that's where I caught it so keep the faith if you want this baby as alliance.

After trying about 400 casts in org, I read people's comments that the Crocolisks in the City daily quest doesn't improve the drop rate anymore, but I decided to give it a shot anyway.

So I took the quest, disabled auto-loot (that way I don't fish the quest item) and tried about 30-50 casts with no luck.

But yesterday, I wanted to do the quest simply to get my last missing crocolisk companion, so I went to org at 45, 47 and after my 2nd cast, I got the achievement along with the quest item. I was stunned :O!

My addon reported 50% drop rate, which is pure luck of course. But I'm not sure at this point if the fishing daily quest still improves the DR.

Btw, after handing in the daily quest, I got my last missing companion Chuck's Bucket as well :) - I guess it was my lucky day.

Thankfully, being Alliance, I obtained this achievement much easier than its Ironforge counterpart. You just need some luck at times, that's all. And of course you should fish in a secluded area. I got ganked by a Hunter once, obviously thanks to his track humanoid ability. I fished from 1.30 AM on. The Horde shouldn't bug you too much then.

After casting 1070 times in Valley of Spirits, I failed to loot Old Crafty because I forgot it's a green BoP item that requires confirmation of looting before taking it out of the loot window, and accidently recast, closing and losing the item. Just gotta cast 1070 more times and hope I don't do it again :D
(edit) Caught my 2nd one after 1723 total casts and made sure to loot it.

I can't really say how long it took, I fished in between breaks at work, sometimes half an hour here and there then afked a lot.
It could be assumed that one cast takes approx. 10 seconds with the looting and casting. This means 7800 seconds = 130 minutes = 2 hours 10 minutes

Got the fish today after fishing in Orgrimmar at the valley of spirits. Slept in the water by the western wall of the pond, just behind the beam/pillar. That's once you pass by Arnok

Fished with 450+20 fishing skill, for 2hours 27minutes and 46seconds straight while watching a movie, and some YouTube videos. Just clicking the bobber when it splashed, and throwing it out again.

Keep in mind there is a message saying it will bind on pickup, so do not throw out your fishing line before you click the button for the item. Otherwise you are in for another long time of fishing.

In classic the drop item gives a soulbind pop-up like when looting any other BOP. Careful when chain-casting.

You either get lucky or you become determined to get it no matter what.....
Perseverance will always get it for you as long as you are determined... if you're not, well whats the point if you cant stick with it.
But, Luck has a lot to do with it as well, as can be seen in the screenshot .
that is correct, 23 casts into this Characters fishing career, and Old Crafty is in the bag!
Now... On to Ironforge!

Stopped off in Stormwind to get Fishing Diplomat Achievement...

Ok, made it to Ironforge, started fishing, and on cast number 66 (skill in Fishing 67)
I caught Old Ironjaw!
Both on the same day, in just 66 casts!
I am going to Vegas Baby!
