Actually, I had this same thing crop up just this week. Except it was with characters and not with gear. I have a level 77 paladin and a level 22 druid. I dislike the paladin and love the druid. So I asked around and the general opinion of the people I asked was to level the druid. Another option was to finish the pally (would be my first 80) and get Bind on Account gear for the druid.I chose the second option.

I'm in the midst of that same decision right now.First off, I'm an alt-aholic. Yep, I raid some, and do my dailies and heroics, etc... but I enjoy the process of levelling characters. I like learning talents, tricks, shortcuts, and maybe new ways of doing quests (but man, I'm flat done with The Barrens). So I find myself at a bit of a standoff between gear. I have enough emblems to buy one piece for now, and I'm not sure who to gear. My 43 priest already has shoulders, trinket and mace, so that's all set.Do I buy the plate shoulders for my 71 DK (who will, in all honestly be probably nothing more than my herb/alch mule), the axe and/or shoulders for my 23 shaman that I'm finding I rather like, or the shoulders and ? for my 41 druid? The only real considerations for me are the following:
Interestingly enough, I can relate. During this week's Naxx, Damnation dropped from the 4H chest. Now, I've been a sword & off-hand mage for a long while now, but the pure awesome look of this staff was tempting me. I had priority under EPGP, but I was gunning more for Life & Death, so I was torn between the two choices.A guildie remarked over Vent that I'd lose a lot of Hit Rating versus my current weapon combo, so I declined the staff. However...a/. I conveniently forgot I had T7.5 Gloves, soaked in Hit Rating in the bank to offset the lost Hit Rating.b/. I also was unaware that +spellpower enchants to Staves had been given a much needed boost since 3.1.c/. Somehow didn't get how awesome it looked after staring at it for 2 mins.It ended up going to a newbie priest in the guild who spent most of that run, running around like a lunatic screaming and dying. He couldn't even keep still for the 4H fight and do as he was told.Really kicking myself now... >_<
dont you need to have a character at lvl 55 to get a death knight?also, when i am asked to give advice i try to give generalized answers so they partially answer the question but encourage the person to explore it on their own and make their own choices.
What do you get the most enjoyment out of in this game?Use that answer to weigh your choices.
There isn't much to my thought process.1) Which is the best investment overall? Do I buy the plate shoulders useable by 3 classes or do I buy the cloth ones, which are useable by anybody (even if the stats might be blah for some classes).2) How hard is it to recoop costs? If I spend X badges on an item how many runs will I need to do to get those back. Am I willing to put the time in for it? Would I be doing those runs anyway?
If I can't decide, I flip a coin.
I take into account what I enjoy doing, what my guild seems to need (have we had trouble getting geared tanks for raids? I can upgrade my tanking set by doing XYZ...) have we needed more of XYZ type healer than type ABC? My current level 80 can heal ABC, but if I level up my XYZ healer would that provide more guild benefit and thus, me more satisfying raid time!I have too many low level alts right now to play all of them regularly. My 77 hunter will soon be 80 if I just quest/instance a bit.My 40 druid is fun to play, which gives me incentive to use emblems for heirloom gear to speed the leveling process. My 30 mage has the polymorph:rabbit tome, which I would like to use at some point, she has heirloom shoulders already.
I made this kind of decision twice while deciding whether or not to spend my Stone Keeper's Shards on the Black War Mammoth, or Heirloom PvP shoulders for a hunter and shammy that I plan on having as bg twinks (shammy being healer). Though the mammoth may be cool, I figured that I'd get more use out of the Heirloom gear.Atm I'm collecting badges for Heirloom PvE shoulders for the new mage I'm leveling, as opposed to spending them on PvP shoulders that are better than what I already have for my main.
