I have this book, and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in developing games.
I backed the first edition on Kickstarter and I am backing the 2nd printing on BackerKit. Really neat read and it met the needed funding in 24 hours! Currently only 11 days left!
Complainers and unmotivated employees plague employers everywhere. Eagerness to learn and improve is rare.Boy if that ain't the truth.
That is a wild and toxic ride - he justifies low salaries by many people wanting to work in entertainment; encourage working for low salary AND for free overtime,It is 2023, this approach is outdated and leads to burnout. I'm not sorry for wanting everyone working not having issues with paying basic bills, for employees not having to slave away duing crunch for eons in vain hopes they will be compensated better in a couple years.
Man oh man. I can't speak to art, management, etc, but as a programmer, I have to say that working at Blizzard is a very bad idea. Their HQ is in a super expensive suburb, and they pay less than half what you'd make at a non-gaming company. At Blizzard you're going to be living in a 50 square foot closet working 80 hours a week to make half the money you'd pull in cruising through 35 hours a week at Microsoft. Never mind what you'd get in a nap pod at Google. So long as I'm here and some impressionable youngster might read this: Check out levels.fyi or the "Who's hiring?" threads at HackerNews for some real programming job info. Also, take "cost of living" calculators with a grain of salt. Most people aren't going to buy $5,000's a month's worth of eggs and gasoline, and at the end of 20 years paying the mortgage on a million dollar condo you'll have a much higher net worth than you would at the end of 20 years paying the mortgage on a $250k ranch out in the middle of nowhere
Yeah this was very obviously written in a time before the mass layoffs and social impacts of late-stage capitalism became so prominent (partly thanks to the changes forced on by the pandemic). There are some parts that I do agree with, but most of it just sounds like he is completely out of touch with what's happened over the last few years.
